d0m··on Ask HN: Can you get away with not working?
It's not being lazy, it's being paid for A and working on B, totally different thing.

If I hire a freelancer to work on project A and charges me X$/h, but instead work on project B and still charge me for that time, it's illegal. Of course, illegal is a fuzzy term, it really depends of how the contract is crafted and, more importantly, how much one would be willing to take legal action against the freelancer (which will most likely turns out more expensive than just letting it go).

I'm no lawyer, but pretty sure it's not written in standard contracts "Employees can work on whatever he/she wants, get to keep all the IP of it, pending that employee doesn't get caught."

d0m··on Ask HN: Can you get away with not working?
I mean, it's illegal and you're lying to your employer.. so in the end it's about your morale sense.. it doesn't matter much what other people do or think of it.

A somewhat stupid analogy is like saying "I'm killing people in my spare time. I get that it's wrong, but that hasn't stopped me from doing it. Am I the only one that does this?" If you find other people doing it won't make it more legal ;-)

d0m··on Ask HN: How do you quickly test out new product/app ideas?
One great way is to focus on personal problems (instead of "ideas"). Solve it in a very hacky way for yourself and then share it with people, see if it helps others. If it doesn't, no big deal, you've solved an annoying problem for yourself without investing too much time. If others like it, then you can see if you want to take it to the next level. Most first-time founders started that way.

Interesting essay on this subject: http://www.paulgraham.com/startupideas.html

d0m··on Opinions on functional programming and OCaml
I didn't even know you were at Facebook, it wasn't mentioned in the gist so I don't think it's fair to say you've misrepresented Facebook.
d0m··on Sam Altman: ‘Too many’ Y Combinator companies raise money
The irony of the game is that having money in the bank let you hire great people and pivot to the right idea, but to raise money you need great people and the right idea. So, MAYBE, it's not that bad of a thing to raise even if you don't have everything figured out yet.
d0m··on Ask HN: What to do if you hate working for someone else and arent an entrepreneur?
Can be a freelancer. You're your own boss, you can pick who you want to work with and you're in control of your time, but you don't need to risk it all on a "risky big idea".
d0m··on Ask HN: Does your Alexa or Google Home make you more productive?
I'm trying to hard to use siri but it never works.

"light" > I don't understand

"flashlight" > I can't do that

"why?" > I couldn't say

"open the flashlight" > google search

d0m··on Ask HN: What are the best tools for code reviews?
For viewing the code, whatever is your favorite editor. To comment on it, go talk to the person.
d0m··on Will.i.am's startup raises $117M, enters enterprise market
Timer 15 minutes. I use that all the time. I would use it (siri) a LOT more if it didn't suck so much.
d0m··on Ask HN: Is Meteor.js still a thing?
From my experience (a.k.a tried and failed..), I'd rather take a bit more time to glue a few amazing open-source tools together than to use an "all-in-one" framework that will screw me down the road.

Over the years, I've built the equivalent of those real-time systems using postgres, redis, rabbitmq and node that can scale horizontally. It's obviously longer than using firebase, but at least I know what's going on under the hood, I can easily optimize and debug it, I can add any missing features or switch any tools (I.e. can easily switch off postgres to something else if I needed it).

It's for the same reasons that I use React on the front-end. It's great for the view layer, but I still get to pick and use great libraries for the rest of the app (in-memory database, state management, routing, etc etc.) I can easily switch off React to something else because the surface API that I'm using is extremely small.

I would still use meteor or any of the competitors for a hackathon or prototype, but never for a long-term project. YMMV

d0m··on How it feels to learn JavaScript in 2017
Maybe a sign that things are too coupled through. Can make the same argument on any project, I.e. wanted to add small feature, ended up changing 27 files.
d0m··on Android Oreo
"Allows you to see two apps at once, it's like having super strength and laser vision." really
d0m··on Ask HN: What books had the greatest effect on how you structure your code?
SICP made the biggest difference; it really changed the way I approach mutability and state management in everything I write (To name just this).
d0m··on Ask HN: What good alteratives are there to Google News?
There's one thing on reddit called "multireddits" which is an aggregation of multiple subreddits; so I picked my local news subreddits + world ones and this is my daily news. I like it very much. Only complaint is that it seems to show the same news multiple days in a row even though I "read" it already.
d0m··on What Is Ethereum?
Something that would be helpful is "How is it different than X?", such as bitcoins or whatnot.
d0m··on Twitch nabs exclusive streaming deal with Blizzard for e-sports events
For what it's worth, I just turn off the chat. Exceptions are less popular streams where I know the chat is great. Pro-players also often hang around other pros streams, so you get to interact with not only the streamer but their friends too.
d0m··on Why we’re betting against real-time team messaging
I like it. Basically the design choice was to focus on threads within channels, instead of simply channels. Slack has that thread feature but I never use it because it's hard to follow. I guess slack could copy them and have a "text mode" and a "thread mode", easily being able to switch between both, and then the threads will be much more useful.
d0m··on Ask HN: My company has been acquired and I'm kicked out. What should I do now?
2 quick things:

1- It's great that you've learned a wide range of skills.. this is extremely powerful (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-shaped_skills). If you're not sure what to do next, I'd look for the "vertical bar" and focus on that. Maybe it could be design or tech, whatever.

2- You invested a lot of time in learning how to build and run a startup.. very few people possess those skills, so maybe start a new project learning from what previously went wrong and see where that leads you.

d0m··on Be Careful with UUID or GUID as Primary Keys
One huge benefit of UUID is how you can safely create them while being offline, and then sync them at a later stage without conflicts.
d0m··on Ask HN: What language-agnostic programming books should I read?
Structure and Interpretation of Computer Program (it's written in scheme but it's mostly for convenience and its lack of syntax).

Definitely the best book I've read on programming.

d0m··on A Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming (2010) [pdf]
Loved this book, packed with a lot of awesomeness.
d0m··on Show HN: µTT – A new faster MQTT broker
Do you know why/how is it faster than say RabbitMQ? Is it some tradeoff in features for instance?
d0m··on Beej's Guide to Network Programming
I read it over and over again 15 years ago, great resource.
d0m··on The beginning of Git supporting other hash algorithms
One straightforward way is to use the new sha only for new Git repos. Old repo could be migrated but it would require "re-commiting" everything to the new repo.
d0m··on YC Annual Letter 2017
Keep in mind that google's mission evolved over the years.. but at the beginning, they still had a clear mission of making it easy to search the web (compared to the portals that forced you to their bullshit content).
d0m··on Ask HN: How much do React Native developers cost?
https://angel.co/salaries is pretty useful to answer those questions
d0m··on Ask HN: If you could move anywhere for a tech job, where would you go?
Think of yourself in 5-10 years from now. Where do you want to be career wise and relationship wise? Then backtrack from that and do the first step to make it happen. You're very lucky to not be tied to a specific location so use that to your advantage!
d0m··on Ask HN: Why do companies outside the US pay so much less?
In Montreal, with 70k (53k USD), you can have a nice house, free healthcare and send your kids to the university.

d0m··on Ask HN: What inspires you to persevere through adversity?
Much easier if you plan for it.

When starting a project, one of the inevitable outcome is failure so it's worth thinking about what would happen in that case. I.e. plan for the good but also the bad.

Also, it's important to look at the longer goal. You can either succeed or fail, but make sure it gets you closer to that goal.
