d0gbread··on Google Stadia shuts down internal studios, changing business focus
I've seen this comment a few times now across HN and article comments. Can you say more about why you hold this opinion?

It seems clear to me that Google deciding not to focus on game development is showing a level of awareness we should want to see. In fact, by redirecting those resources they are directly investing in the platform instead of content for it that, let's be honest, probably would have flopped.

I've been a happy Stadia Pro subscriber for about six months and in that time all I've heard from the community is "we want AAA, we want game x, y, and z" and with Google's decision, they're likely freeing resources to do just that.

d0gbread··on A network analysis on cloud gaming: Stadia, GeForce Now and PSNow
Streaming also does away with the hassle of downloading updates and managing storage space. I would happily avoid loading up my macbook with games even if it could run them.
d0gbread··on A network analysis on cloud gaming: Stadia, GeForce Now and PSNow
I have Stadia, love it, and don't care that much about quality. I care that it's console-free and on the two TVs I bounce between, or wherever else.
d0gbread··on A Polar Vortex collapse sequence has begun
Yes, in the US there's weather.gov. The govt has a vested interest in settling people down (...usually) and the opposite for the media/weather so I like to bounce between both for larger storms.
d0gbread··on Bitcoin is a disaster
This is a similar argument to the semantics of black lives matter and refund the police. Sure, maybe there's a better name to make a better first impression, maybe not. Move past it.

Ironically you already have by simply referring to it as "crypto" as most do. Things evolve, like "e-mail" becoming "email" and countless other evolutions as things find their niche and become mainstream.

d0gbread··on I wish I never bought Bitcoin
I agree with you but I do think it's worth thinking about self interest vs greed. Not a conversation that can be wrapped up in a thread but there's so much to unpack.
d0gbread··on The stock market is the cheapest since 1980
My favorite line from the article is "There are simply no alternatives" as people build cash reserves and buy stores of value like gold and Bitcoin. People are hungry for an alternative, but yes I suppose if you only consider stocks and bonds this article has a point.
d0gbread··on No Cookie for You
I think you mean "you don't need cookie banners if you have your own identifier" which they certainly do and affords them the luxury of this blog post.
d0gbread··on Brave Complies With Apple iOS Guidelines
No, Google has your entire life story associated with your verified name, server side and only under your control insofar as GDPR/CCPA deletion requests.

Not to say I personally have a problem with that (I looove my Google Maps history) but it's a very different model.

d0gbread··on Using Google Analytics without GDPR consent
Another frustrating "web analytics is evil" post, this time trying to not store PII in a service that disallows PII as part of their terms of service.
d0gbread··on Google Poly is shutting down
Alternatively, it's time to adjust expectations and understand that if a product or service doesn't hit the growth curve Google expects, they sunset it.

A lot of businesses would be more successful if they learned how to do this across their own products and features. Instead engineers drown in KTLO, adding to cognitive load not only for employees but customers too.

d0gbread··on Google Photos will lock some new features behind a paywall
Overall I'm excited to see this, as much as I don't need one more subscription (and have a very legacy, free, personal GSuite for a custom domain so I can't use One anyway).

Maybe this is a strategic transition to a more consistent, less advertising dependent Google.

d0gbread··on Brave Browser Passes 20M Monthly Active Users and 7M Daily Active Users
Brave blocks Google Tag Manager completely and that doesn't drop any cookies at all, and Google Analytics which drops first party cookies.
d0gbread··on I am an Uighur who faced China’s concentration camps
Why is that?
d0gbread··on Chrome exempts Google sites from user site data settings
Since I see some agreeing comments, I'll throw out a bit about why I disagree.

Like shopping on Amazon, or buying from China, I'm going to do what's best for me as an individual. It's government's job to step in and tweak the playing field to keep it competitive, and I'll happily vote to regulate the very things that serve me today, whether that's breaking businesses up, preventing mergers in the first place, having businesses pay for their externalities, etc.

d0gbread··on Chrome exempts Google sites from user site data settings
This 100%, well put.

Within businesses, people have evolved far past market definitions where widget x¹ competes with widget x². Our political savvy as consumers would improve if we could see that as well.

For example, why would Google approve a product like Stadia? What does it compete with? Nintendo, yes but not really, since so many Stadia players have a Switch also... just like most of us have Facebook and Twitter accounts. But maybe they're true competition is Netflix? Social media? Users are giving Google their time = data = insights = further monopolistic advertising power.

d0gbread··on Total number of Brave Browser Publishers
The difference may be those with auto contribute vs those that directly contribute. I have auto contribute off because I don't see much benefit if I can choose to directly contribute to those that I felt created great content, not just happened to have decent SEO.
d0gbread··on Microsoft to acquire ZeniMax Media and Bethesda Softworks for $7.5B
I think you're right from a "person looking to play a good video game" perspective but what's easily overlooked is the data to be gained and who gains that data.

Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon have unprecedented insight into user behavior and that is power, and that continues to consolidate.

d0gbread··on Airtable Apps
There's a lot of negativity on HN for tools like AirTable, but as someone that uses Coda regularly, I find it invaluable as a prototyping tool, if not a "production" internal app. There's nothing quite like having modeled and populated tables in such a flexible tool while everyone is trying to reach consensus.
d0gbread··on Ex-Google boss Eric Schmidt: US 'dropped the ball' on innovation
Is it awesome? The Chinese government has such power over the people and businesses innovating that there could be significant implications for Chinese citizens, neighboring countries, and the world. Where innovation happens first and how closely it's held affects so much. Your comment strikes me as dangerously optimistic.
d0gbread··on Pringles tube tries to wake from 'recycling nightmare'
Sure, here in Vermont we have lots of dry good options (cereal, dry tea, spices, etc) that are bulk into reusable containers. Pringles aren't conducive to that but I'd certainly scoop tortilla chips, goldfish, etc if I could.
d0gbread··on Ask HN: Any devs interested in exchanging help/labor?
I'd be interested. I can offer help setting up robust Google Analytics / Google Tag Manager configurations and (useful) dashboards that can help you run your businesses, start up, and side projects.

I'm currently looking for some vue.js help on a Laravel-based side project I work on very very rarely but would love to take a bit further.

d0gbread··on Scene bust triggered historic drop in ‘pirate’ releases
I would have agreed with you a few months ago but pirating is moving towards the easier path again. Google had done a pretty good job of letting you know what service something was on, but now something on, say, Amazon Prime Video but require a sub-subscription to whatever this IMDB nonsense is.
d0gbread··on First tax year with Stripe Atlas
How your membership is organized in an LLC matters too. I assumed pass through, no revenue no taxes no filing, but apparently in my state a two member LLC is a partnership for tax purposes and requires filing.
d0gbread··on Gallup: 81% of Black Americans Want Police to Retain Local Presence
Why fret so much over the language though, that's what I don't understand. I think most people, of any POV, would agree it's not the best phrase given that without explanation it means what a small minority wants. Move past it, to the issue.
d0gbread··on Ask HN: What non-obvious tech/market may take off in the next few years?
The tool I use has three user types: Maker, Editor, and Viewer. Only Makers can make the kinds of changes that would be code. Editors can manipulate the underlying data. Viewers, of course, get read only.

The nice thing about this model is that it implies there's a bar to be a Maker and other users can't break your work. You need to be able to reason about concepts like DRY, star schema, cardinality, etc. As a Maker in my org (15-30K people depending on where we are with the pandemic) I can support many no-code apps painlessly in addition to my primary responsibilities, whereas one CRUD app on Heroku had me feeling spread pretty thin.

d0gbread··on MicroStrategy Adopts Bitcoin as Primary Treasury Reserve Asset
Compared to what.
d0gbread··on Uber and Lyft ordered by California judge to classify drivers as employees
I mean, you joke, but if we all took a more active role in forming educated opinions and voting, we'd all be better off. There isn't much of a reason to not find the time to familiarize with local laws and send a letter to representatives, vote on policy over party, have more nuanced conversation with family and friends, etc.
d0gbread··on The Clean Network – United States Department of State
I think you may have pulled the wrong point. This thread seems more about how the US prides itself on being a role model when we are often hypocritical. If we're good to slide on our principles and ideals "as long as we can tell ourselves apart from China" that's a pretty sad state.
d0gbread··on Uber and Lyft ordered by California judge to classify drivers as employees
That isn't remotely what the comment you're replying to said. I agree that thinking about the gig economy as a different type of worker opens to door to a "how might we" conversation where everyone has the opportunity to win.
