d--b··on I'm reluctant to verify my identity or age for any online services
whatever man. Everyone in France has an ID. It's no big deal, really.
d--b··on Show HN: Herniated disc made me build a back-safe kettlebell app
I have two as well, L4 and L5. I think that herniated discs are not all the same. I am no expert but I think people should be careful depending on which face the hernia is protruding to, and that they don't require the same kind of exercise.

Worth checking...

d--b··on I'm reluctant to verify my identity or age for any online services
Age and identity verification can and should be done at the country level.

France has an ID service to pay taxes, and they have a network of possible ID verification systems. Like, you can ID through the tax system, or through the healthcare system. It works fine.

Implementing an API that uses the same to provide age verification is not rocket science.

If you need age verification for a website, say "smedia.fr", then you go there, then it makes you get an age verification token to "franceid.gov.fr", that guy gives you back a token, you send the token to smedia.fr which checks the token with franceid.gov.fr

I don't understand how this is even an issue.

d--b··on We Built a Video Rendering Engine by Lying to the Browser About What Time It Is
This is super smart but doesn't seem very future-proof...
d--b··on If AI writes code, should the session be part of the commit?
They’re in /shownew. the last 30 Show HN submissions were sent in the last two hours. I think that’s a lot more than what we used to see.
d--b··on If AI writes code, should the session be part of the commit?
The issue is that there is more HN submissions than the community is able to process. But you could say the same of the front page, which is mostly a fairly small sample of the good stuff that go through /new

So you could treat Show HN as the same. Like what gets floated on /show is only a small sample of the good stuff in /shownew and be fine with the idea that a lot of the good Show HN just slip through the crack. Which seems to me like the best alternative. Possibly with a /showpool maybe?

You could split Show HN into categories, but you'd have done it by now if you thought it a good idea.

You could also rate Show HN submissions algorithmically trying to push for those projects that have been around longer and that look like more effort has been put into them, but I guess that's kind of hard.

Or you'd have to hire actual people to pre-sort the submissions, and gut all the ones that are not up-to-par. In fact, if there was a human-based approval system for new Show HN, you'd possibly get a lot fewer submissions and more qualitative ones, which in itself would make the work of sorting through them simpler.

d--b··on The whole thing was a scam
> In capitalism, the market decides.

> In oligarchy, connections and donations decide.

> It sure look like the US is transitioning from the former to the latter.

The US probably always was like that. Now they just don’t bother hiding it.

d--b··on OpenAI reaches deal to deploy AI models on U.S. DoW classified network
What do you think could be going, seriously?

Obviously Altman agreed to whatever they asked him and is lying that the DoW is cool about the red lines.

d--b··on OpenAI raises $110B on $730B pre-money valuation
Oh look! Altman just made a deal with the DoW
d--b··on OpenAI agrees with Dept. of War to deploy models in their classified network
At this stage, everything OpenAi does is to try to keep investors investing.

They’re willing to let their brand go to trash for this government contract.

Pretty much every American is standing with Anthropic on this. No one left or right wants mass surveillance and terminators. In fact, no one in the world wants this, except the US military.

But Altman seems so desperate to keep the cash coming he’s ready to do anything.

d--b··on I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk
So the DoW is angry because it can’t use the model produced by what they call a woke radical left company?

And nobody in the administration is concerned at all that the model itself might be somewhat against their own views?

If it was so radically woke, wouldn’t the model, as used in fully autonomous weapons, be potentially harmful to ICE officers that the left considers as a threat to the American people?

Wouldn’t the mass surveillance of Americans be biased against the right?

These people are so dumb.

d--b··on Layoffs at Block
Owning it doesn’t make it less of a shit move.

Canning people when you do well is just a way to milk the cow that others raised for you. Plus it shows a blatant lack of imagination and foresight.

I just hope the remaining employees realize they’re in an ejectable seat and stop working for people like that. It’s only a matter of time the founders sell to Bending Spoons for a final paycheck and everyone else is out.

d--b··on The Hunt for Dark Breakfast
maybe Portugal’s Pastel de Nata falls in the dark zone?

It’s a baked custard (so plenty of eggs) in a pie.

not sure the proportions match.

d--b··on How will OpenAI compete?
Worth noting that it’s not a winner-takes all situation. There’s definitely space for differentiation.

Anthropic is in favor with developers and generally tech people, while OpenAi / Gemini are more commonly used by regular folks. And Grok, well, you know…

We have yet to see who’s winning in the “creative space”, probably OpenAI.

As these positionings cristallize, each company is likely going to double down on their user’s communities, like Apple did when specifically targeting creative/artsy people, instead of cranking general models that aren’t significantly better at anything.

d--b··on Artist who “paints” portraits on glass by hitting it with a hammer
yeah it’s definitely a genre in itself.

It’s like there are 2 axes: - cool technique and - cool picture. The second is way more important than the first, which is way painters are still on top of the 2D art world.

Some people can do both though. And i’d say even in these cases the art world tend to dismiss the weird technique as gimmicky.

d--b··on Mac mini will be made at a new facility in Houston
Large companies cut deals with the government all the time.

When a large company wants to create a new plant somewhere, they go shopping for what state/city will give them the most favorable tax. Politicians throw in special exemptions, special tax credits, exclusivity contracts, all sorts of things.

In the US, everything is flexible.

d--b··on Mac mini will be made at a new facility in Houston
My wild guess is that Cook cut a deal with the IRS so that they build in the US, but get tax benefits other companies don't get, so that it looks good on the administration - like the tariffs are working - and still benefits Apple.

I don't think Apple wouldn't find a cheaper place to manufacture Macs than the US. The US is literally the most expensive place to build.

That, or the Mac Minis are 100% asembled by robots, which is also a possibility.

d--b··on I pitched a roller coaster to Disneyland at age 10 in 1978
Ah! Well spotted!
d--b··on I pitched a roller coaster to Disneyland at age 10 in 1978
I just love everything about this.

I love that kids could be left alone in their home and would burn plastic over a gas stove to create models of roller coasters.

I love that Disney would respond to him and not even forget the typo in quadrupuler.

I love that he kept all that and thought of it as a foundational part of his personality (I think probably he was already like that)

d--b··on “Car Wash” test with 53 models
This should be coined the Daniel Kahneman reasoning test, mirroring his 2011 book "thinking fast and slow", which postulates that fast thinking and slow thinking occur in different parts of the brain, and that they are fundamentally different processes, that are weighted by yet another part of the brain.

This test is interesting because it asks the LLM to break a pattern recognition that's easy to shortcut. "XXX Is 50 Meters Away. Should I Walk or Drive?" is a pattern that 99% of the time will be rightly answered by "walk". And humans are tempted to answer without thinking (as reflected in the 71.5% stat OP is mentioning). This is likely more pronounced for humans that have stronger feelings about the ecology, as emotions tend to shortcut reasoning.

For a long time, LLMs have only been able to think in that "fast" mode, missing obvious trick questions like these. They were mostly pattern recognition machines.

But the more important results here, is not that "oh look! Those LLMs fail at this basic question", no. The more important result is that the latest generation actually doesn't fail.

I think I am not the only one to have noted that there was a giant leap in reasoning capacities between Sonnet 4.5 and Opus 4.6. As a developper, working with Opus 4.6 has been incredible.

d--b··on Writing code is cheap now
Well another consequence of that is that you’re going to have a lot more tools to maintain.

And LLMs aren’t half as good as maintaining code as they are to generate it in the first place. At least yet.

d--b··on The Age Verification Trap: Verifying age undermines everyone's data protection
I don’t understand this.

Age verification is not more difficult than a payment system.

I mean, if I can pay on a website without the website to know my credit card number, I should be able to prove my age without the website to know anything about me either.

France has a ID verification system for all its service. You’d think they should be able to provide a hook that lets people prove they’re over the age limit to any third party without the third party knowing. It seems fairly basic.

There is a solution to this.

There are privacy issues on the internet, but I think this ain’t one.

d--b··on Fix your tools
Also, FYI: Claude is very good at fixing tools
d--b··on Facebook is cooked
I never opened an account. For me facebook was like this from day 1. I thought it was cooked in 2009. I guess I was somewhat wrong.
d--b··on US plans online portal to bypass content bans in Europe and elsewhere
This is just weird.

I mean… Spending tax dollars so that foreigners can watch porn without age verification sounds like a bad use of budget.

d--b··on An AI Agent Published a Hit Piece on Me – The Operator Came Forward
That’s a long Soul.md document! They could have gone with “you are Linus Torvalds”.
d--b··on Sizing chaos
My impression is that at the end of the season, there's like 0 XXL, and 8XS, and 8Ms, but maybe that's just a perception problem.
d--b··on Sizing chaos
Here's an asumption:

When you get into the overweight category, sizing becomes a lot more difficult, because then the ratios that are relatively standard for non overweight bodies (like waistline to tallness) completely break down.

So now you don't need just one parameter, but at least two: waist and tallness. And this causes the number of different sizes to explode. So instead of (S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL, XXXXL), you'll need (S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL) waist x (S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL) length. And it becomes unmanageable for brands to cover all the different sizes without having a large amount of waste.

Men trousers and shirts do this, because generally men fashion don't change that fast, so the brands can carry many models for a longer time period.

d--b··on Martial arts robots at 2026 Spring Festival Gala [video]
Yeah, when the G1s dance with kids, I realized how small they actually were. Definitely not the same category.
d--b··on Ask HN: Is AI the final nail in the coffin for solo developers?
This absolutely.

It was already the case that the hardest part of a project was getting people interested enough that they invest time into trying it.

But now, the fight to get people's attention on new projects is going to get an awful lot harder, as the barrier to entry dropped, and that people who are actually good at marketing can make apps themselves.

Otherwise, as a solo dev, you can leverage AI for both coding faster, and getting better at marketing.
