And Chris Wellons' "A Magnetized Needle and a Steady Hand," detailing how to build an ELF implementation of 'true' using nothing more than 'echo' or 'printf': https://nullprogram.com/blog/2016/11/17/
cylinder714··on Crunch – a Scheme compiler with a minimal runtime
I'm not super familiar with the details but I've heard that Shen has a really good type system. Aditya Siram addresses types at 12:00 in this video: https://youtu.be/lMcRBdSdO_U

cylinder714··on The Guinness Map – Interactive Map of Guinness Around the World
I've long wished for a geographical database of bars with Chimay signs hung outside them, like the now-shuttered La Trappe in S.F. on Columbus. But this is good, too.

Chimay is brewed under the supervision of Trappist monks in Belgium. I saw a four pack of cans at a store in Carson City—saints preserve us!

cylinder714··on Show HN: Indentation-based syntax for Clojure
This reminds me of Breck Yunits and his Parsers idea for a programming language: https://scroll.pub/blog/teddyTalk.html

Scroll, a publishing system, seems to be the main focus of his efforts: https://scroll.pub/

He's on HN, but his posts and comments irritate people: https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=breck

The Windows ports of Vim, Pine (now Alpine) and par made working on Windows tolerable.

cylinder714··on U.K. Petition: Call a General Election
"I would like there to be another General Election.

"I believe the current Labour Government have gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead up to the last election."

Over 1,789,000 signatures as I type this.

Brilliant article, and I neglected to bookmark it earlier, thank you.
cylinder714··on Show HN: HN Update – Hourly news broadcast of top HN stories
Wow—this is indistinguishable from an NPR piece.
cylinder714··on Scratches in 2001: A Space Osyssey (2018)
There's an item in the FAQ at jwz.org/xscreensaver that explains how to use a video as a source.
cylinder714··on James Earl Jones has died
"I told you to speak your mind, Jack, but Jesus!"
cylinder714··on Mondragon as the new city-state
Winemaking requires far more resources, labor, skill and time than simple grape juice production.

cylinder714··on Brutalist buildings should stay, even if people think they're ugly
There's a similar building in San Francisco, I think it's near the new Transbay Terminal? I've moved away so I can't drive down and search for it myself, sadly.

I was shocked when I first encountered it: "What eldritch thing broods in a windowless skyscraper?" But of course, a phone exchange.

(Any hams here? I remember seeing a tall building in S.F. with a log-periodic antenna on its roof; a consulate, maybe.)

cylinder714··on Why CSV is still king
This encapsulates my problem with CSVs:

- If I send someone a spreadsheet, they'll open it with a spreadsheet application; Excel, LibreOffice, whatever.

- If I send someone a CSV file, they'll want to open it with a text editor.

Ack, no! Open it with a spreadsheet app, or load it into SQLite, or, best of all, open it with VisiData or some kind of editor designed for tabular data.

cylinder714··on Defense of Lisp macros: The automotive field as a case in point

cylinder714··on Ask HN: Am I crazy or is Android development awful?
"PilBox (`PicoLisp Box') is a generic Android App which allows to write Apps in pure PicoLisp, without touching Java, and without the need of an Android SDK.

"You do not need to root your device. And - if you prefer - you do not need a separate development machine (PC or laptop): All can be done in a terminal on the device, and even in a Lisp REPL while the App is running."

cylinder714··on Ask HN: Am I crazy or is Android development awful?
"Toybox's main goal is to make Android self-hosting by improving Android's command line utilities so it can build an installable Android Open Source Project image entirely from source under a stock Android system. After a talk at the 2013 Embedded Linux Conference explaining this plan, Google merged toybox into AOSP and began shipping toybox in Android Marshmallow in 2015." --Rob Landley

cylinder714··on Why No Roman Industrial Revolution? (2022)
I read an essay long ago that suggested the Egyptians could have built gliders in the fashion of Otto Lilienthal out of papyrus. And that could have stimulated the idea of propulsion in them or in other subsequent societies.

EDIT: I wonder if a Rogallo wing could be made out of papyrus...I'm having a Thor Heyerdahl moment.

cylinder714··on Qimgv – Fast, simple image viewer
I wonder if qiv, my favorite lightweight image viewer, us related somehow.
cylinder714··on Gone 10 years, World’s Biggest Bookstore still grips readers
I used to make the pilgrimage from Santa Cruz to the store on N. First Street, and occasionally the store on the old Apple campus.

And Stacy's Books in Cupertino and Market Street in San Francisco, and the last holdout, Digital Guru off the Lawrence Expressway.

cylinder714··on Gone 10 years, World’s Biggest Bookstore still grips readers
Yes! I got my copy of SICP there.
cylinder714··on MacRelix – Unix-like features for classic Mac OS

cylinder714··on The Pen, Mightier (2011)
Zebra V-301 fountain pens go for about USD$5 and I think they make disposable ones for less.
