cyberpunk··on GEFS on OpenBSD: A Early Preview
What well known data-losing bugs are there in zfs? It can be slow, and resource hungry, but afaik it's about as safe as they come (and I've been using it in prod since solaris 10)
cyberpunk··on Operation Smart Kettle – Börzels Blog
It looks like all he managed to do was setup a wifi access point on a laptop and connect a kettle to it...

That's 'hacking' these days is it?

cyberpunk··on Nvidia is the central bank of AI
NV gives out a $100 to Party A, who puts it in their bank.

Bank takes $90 of that deposit (assuming 10% fractional reserve rule, no idea what the actual number is), and loans it out to party B, who pays it into either the same or another bank. Same rules apply -- except now it's down to $81 being loaned out, and so on and so forth, until that 100$ generated $1000 in total bank deposits.

edit: of course, it's never actually directly like this, a lot of other factors are involved, maybe the money is spent, maybe no one wants to borrow it, etc etc -- so it's more complicated but that's I think what they mean

cyberpunk··on Psychoactive substances helped spur Andean civilization
I can't quit it. When I do, after about 2 weeks I completely lose the ability to be a good worker bee and sit in my open plan office, and hide my contempt for the absolute rank ineptitude of almost everyone else there. Load me up with the happy brown juice and I can pretty much make it through. I'm not convinced this is sustainable tbh.
cyberpunk··on Moonshot serves Claude instead of Kimi and collects exchanges for model training
Because it’s TOS violation. Anthropic have no agreed tos with the websites they’re scraping. The accounts being used to distill Anthropic’s models are all bound by their terms
cyberpunk··on Moonshot serves Claude instead of Kimi and collects exchanges for model training
you can buy a book, scan it, and upload the counts of every letter, distribution of apostophies, use it as the input to some convoluted process to produce weights or a search index though. They got slapped for illegally obtaining the files, not for producing derivative works of them.

distilling another llm is a clear tos violation but no one really knows how much teeth those have. financially probably none all they can do is whack a mole on the accounts doing it which won’t work.

so they’re trying to lobby copyright changes i guess; unlikely to succeed as doing so would also make all search engines illegal

cyberpunk··on Forgejo <=16.0.3 Critical RCE
Yep. I have one hanging off an openbsd machine on a tailnet, took me like... 5 minutes to update it, and it's not exactly a common setup...
cyberpunk··on iPhone Duo
I always thought when people mentioned a “legal pad” in us tv shows they were referring to the colour which always for some inexplicable reason seemed to be… yellow or blue…

now i know…

cyberpunk··on Ask HN: Anyone still coding like 2021? Where do you work?
Well i’ve been working through adventofcode in various languages and im def spending a lot of time in my debugger.

shrug

cyberpunk··on iPhone Duo
… wait you don’t use A* paper sizes? wtf do you use then?
cyberpunk··on AirPods 5
Wait until you upgrade to a set of grados :}
cyberpunk··on iPhone Duo
The camera, mostly.
cyberpunk··on Ask HN: Anyone still coding like 2021? Where do you work?
Sure about that? The effort put into a leetcode medium or hard is usually way above the kind of code i’m mostly doing at work — and realistically i only have at most 2 hours a day of that level of work in me, the rest is the autopilot code, reviews meetings, docs etc.

I’ve found aoc/leetcode pretty much reversed the accidental atrophy for me

cyberpunk··on FreeBSD 14.5-Release
This is not correct, stable is a dev branch, so you’ve been running your 24/7 machines off of unreleased code:

“FreeBSD-STABLE is the development branch from which major releases are made.”

probably works, but i’m not doing that on my prod thanks. (perhaps you’re thinking of the releng/foo branches instead?)

cyberpunk··on The far right's win in Germany is sending a chill through Europe's establishment
I'd like more control where my money goes. I'd happily spend the time every year deciding what % of my contribution goes where, and it would be more democratic. I'm happy to have sewers, police, schools, infrastructure and so on.

I'm less enthused about the growing debt pile my children will inherit, and obvious wastes (e.g - the F126 story, everything Claudia Roth ever touched, 2.6 million* euros on whatever 'antisemitism funding' is, etc).

edit: I was wrong, it was 2.6 million in antisemitism, not billion, so that's a pretty much irrelevant sum.

cyberpunk··on The far right's win in Germany is sending a chill through Europe's establishment
The OECD calculates Germany's 2025 tax wedge at 49.3%. That's the second highest behind belgium.

So we get to work for the state about half the time (including VAT etc), and on-top of it thanks to the Merz masterstroke we're getting an additional 800bn debt between now-2030.

Meanwhile, everything seems to be getting worse.

We need significant reductions in spending, and I don't think anyone has any clue how to achieve it before the house of cards falls down completely.

cyberpunk··on The far right's win in Germany is sending a chill through Europe's establishment
Pretty much. It's not a fun time being a brown person in Chemnitz.

I'm pretty convinced at this point there's almost nothing we can do about it.

cyberpunk··on The far right's win in Germany is sending a chill through Europe's establishment
See, this sort of thing is exactly is why they're going to continue to make progress. This attitude of painting all of them with the same brush and calling them nazis exactly is the thing that creates more nazis.

You're the problem here. I'm not on the side of the AFD, never will be -- and let me be clear: I and my family are directly impacted if they take power.

I don't think calling literal nazis nazis is a problem, my point, if you read it properly is that shutting down the (reasonable or not) concerns of a big chunk of the population and calling them all nazis only makes them more extreme, and grows their power. We need a better way.

cyberpunk··on The far right's win in Germany is sending a chill through Europe's establishment
Right, I agree. But what makes people vote for this kind of stuff? It's not like 44% of saxon-anhalt just wakes up overnight and decides "Hey, you know what...". I think it must grow over years of their feelings/opinions being ignored.

My only point was that, perhaps, we should think about these causes and why the core political parties can't solve them; otherwise it's only going to get worse -- hell at this rate they'll actually get enough people onboard to achieve their goals within a few cycles.

cyberpunk··on The far right's win in Germany is sending a chill through Europe's establishment
? What did I say that gave that opinion? Of course I'm not rooting for the fascists...
cyberpunk··on The far right's win in Germany is sending a chill through Europe's establishment
I have a feeling that the majority of AFD voters simply want some kind of change and action on what they are seeing happen in Germany. I'm definitely not one of them, (and being an auslander myself I have skin in this game) -- this is a failure of the other parties more than it's a victory for AFD. But then again, that's all it takes really.
cyberpunk··on The far right's win in Germany is sending a chill through Europe's establishment
When no political party is willing to address the immigration issue that clearly is forefront on the minds of such AFD voters, what did you expect them to do? Vote CDU?

Do we all think that another 8, 10 years of being "firewalled" out of national poltitics and being told they're all nazis (I'm sure some of them are, but nowhere near all) is going to make them less or more extreme?

It's hard work making a society that caters to everyone, but the approach of ignoring and belittling a large group and ignoring their concerns entirely has a shelf life, and we aren't going to like the results.

But hey, the boomers will all get their pensions and continue to vote CDU so that's all that matters.

cyberpunk··on LG smart TVs caught logging audio with screen off and snooping on local devices
Is it your wall? We have a fairly modern house and the walls are solid gypsum so i just carved out a small hollow for it, cables are going via a channel with some ducting i then plastered over
cyberpunk··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Why don’t you just use it as a display and have a more reputable device (e.g a mini pc or an apple tv) feeding it? I’m not forced to give my tv network access at all, since it doesn’t do anything other than display whatever the apple box outputs…
cyberpunk··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
Think snowden.
cyberpunk··on Your Racist Linux Distro Is Very Nice (Scott Jennings)
Yeah that’s pretty bad. I’m not defending anything really but it’s one of those situations i think where everyone is just trying to do what they think is right, i don’t think either side is intentionally doing evil or whatever.

people are confusing dumb things, I don’t think we’ll ever change the mind of either side of the debate and so I don’t really see the point in even engaging with it anymore. in this case i find it kinda funny that people would choose software over the political opinions of its authors, or even more extreme based on how the vendors of that software donate their profits...

What will we do if it turns out the author of some “load bearing” bit of oss has fringe political beliefs? Where does it end? Are we sure the people who made our kitchen spoon aren’t klansmen?

Is the idea “Quick everyone, we should write a replacement that conforms to the majority view!”

It all just seems so intolerant. Let people be people, if they have stupid opinions whatever they’re theirs not ours.

cyberpunk··on Your Racist Linux Distro Is Very Nice (Scott Jennings)
I know plenty of british asians, whom i consider my friends, who aren’t pedophiles — where does any of this say it applies to everyone? Of course it doesn’t. It sounds a lot like the person with race issues is you.
cyberpunk··on Your Racist Linux Distro Is Very Nice (Scott Jennings)
How is posting an article about the sexual exploitation of minors in the UK “hideously racist”?

Is it because the perpetrators in that case are, majority wise from one ethnic background?

There are uncomfortable truths in the world, it sucks.

cyberpunk··on Proton Outage
What would you switch to? I'm pretty deeply tied into protondrive, so switching is gonna be .. not a lot of fun.
cyberpunk··on Proton Outage
I literally can't order medication at the moment because I need a 2FA from my email; which I pay them for. It seems pretty inexcusable to me (as someone who does a lot of SRE work) that they got bitten twice by the same incident, but I guess I'll wait for the next post-mortem before I decide to switch or not. SLA or not, it's a great way to lose the faith your customers had built up in you.
