cwilkes··on SVB collapse could mean a $500B venture capital ‘haircut’
The moral hazard is that there isn’t a a limit to the $250k FDIC insurance so people that put money into the bank don’t have to care what the bank does.

So there’s no incentive to work with a bank that took the time and money to pass a stress test — in fact the one that didn’t bother to do any testing can give better terms as they aren’t spending money to be safe.

cwilkes··on Samsung “space zoom” moon shots are fake, and here is the proof
The story isn’t “the state tried to fake” but rather the defense tried to get thrown out any image taken by a non analog camera as AI could have added detail where there is none.

> "I'm growing corn, and at some point I'm going to need new shoes," explains Cavatorta. "And now I have to trade some of my corn – which is represented as pinballs – with the person who makes shoes.

Pinball mixed with Agricola sounds like a niche product, so something I would expect from the MIT Media Lab.

cwilkes··on Don’t teach during code reviews
I actually like the “one interface with one implementation” as it makes for less surprises.

With an interface I know that only that method can be called. If a class is passed in i have no idea what methods going to be used. It also gives me a better feeling that the coder has in mind what they need a parameter to do without worrying that they are going to rely on a couple of othogonal methods to be called.

cwilkes··on Crypto.com cuts 20% jobs amid ‘unforeseeable’ industry events
> That trajectory changed rapidly with a confluence of negative economic developments.

No where in that post does he state what the actual issue was. Global economy slowing down? Isn’t that predictable? And what does that have to do with your currency or exchange?

Why should anyone trust this leadership going forward? Have they changed anything other than laying off 1/5th the people that believed the leaders?

It’s a world where an oversized ego overpaid by twice for a platform that can’t run itself without constant work.

Of course the best way to get it to run smoothly is have people show their work with printouts to prove that they shouldn’t be fired.

cwilkes··on Algorithms predict sports teams' moves with 80% accuracy [pdf]
That’s interesting. Do they publish the history of what it costs to place a bet?

There’s quite a few variables that go into the pricing: how much you think a team will win by and the payout if you win the bet. So there can be multiple tracks for “I think my team will win by 7 points” and there might be someone willing to pay 2 to one odds on that while another is 3 to 1.

Maybe betfair sets the rate? This number has to change over time though, can purchasers of a contract sell that contract later on if the odds or payout changes dramatically?

It would also be interesting to see where the “knee” is in those bets. For example winning by at least 7 or at least 8 points in American football should have about the same odds due to the point scheme that has a touchdown plus the extra point at 7 points. Course you could also try and go for two so maybe there is a price difference. Anyway it would be interesting to examine.

cwilkes··on Hell Is a World in Which Everybody Writes Like Axios
For an article complaining about the style of Axios writing it really lacked examples. And the one they gave about shrinking management teams I agreed with — and the author didn’t really come up with a better way to put it.
cwilkes··on SQLite Doesn't Use Git
I don’t understand the dislike of rebase — do you want hundreds of commits that say “linter fix” and “reformatting”?

If there’s commits like “fixed off by one issue in refactor” then it should be a comment in the code so that future will explorers won’t make the same mistake.

Rebase by itself isn’t bad, it just has to contain a good description of what was done and why.

Edit: after posting I realize that I confounded rebase and squash — which is kind of ingrained in my head as that’s how I use GitHub to merge PRs.

If you are getting paid 5x then your healthcare costs aren’t nearly going to approach anything close to that amount.

As a percentage relative to healthcare maybe (say $10 generic drugs instead of $2) but if you are getting $100k more a year who cares ?

cwilkes··on Ask HN: Are authors of “how to be great developer” blogs great developers?
“Take the advice of other successful CEOs” … are those other CEOs working for you day to day? How are they giving advice tailored to your company’s needs that go beyond the typical “invest in your employees” line that everyone knows.

There’s a reason there are coaches as they can do the work full time and can offer better advice.

cwilkes··on Why don’t we do email verification in reverse?
Yeah I don’t get it. Is this the reasoning?

Email is slow to get to me

I use neomutt (there are dozens of us, dozens!) and so links sometimes are wonky.

So let’s use SPF and DMARC, something totally outside of a regular email user’s control, to do this task. And hope that it works.

cwilkes··on Robinhood lays off 23% of staff
Has any tech company that laid off 50% of it’s employees survived? Maybe one or two. That would seem to indicate that the 50% number is too high.

Perhaps you see it as 50% as like when people say they only need 10% of the functionality of MS Word so they could drop 90%. Except that 10% is different for everyone.
