cweiss··on Soylent 1.4: a quick review
I dont think a spoon would be adequate. It's just a little too fine and clumps easily.

They supply a pitcher if you subscribe (or used to) and recommend making it in the pitcher and shaking vigorously. I use an immersion blender usually.

Additionally, I prefer it cold, so (if I'm not making a batch in advance) being able to throw some ice in with the blender to make a 'smoothie' is far more satisfying than going room temp.

cweiss··on How Millennials Get News
Not to mention that the same people who would be relied on to spread any information about the harm of consuming said media is... said media.
cweiss··on The new MacBook
I'm fairly sure it wont be too long before they come out with USB/USB-C flash drives. I've already seen several USB/Micro-USB drives.

Counter-point: As not-the-primary-computer, my MBA is plugged in 80% of the time and gets moved from place to place as my crowded workspace dictates. I can't count the number of times I've accidentally yanked the Magsafe connector out trying to move it just out of cable reach because I needed to get at something underneath.

Granted, a lot of that is learned behavior because I know I can yank the Magsafe out without incurring a $500 repair.

Kickstarter, anyone?

To their credit, it seems Apple is at least trying to solve this problem with their recent foray into 'live' document dragging between iOS/Yosemite. Though it's hardly the ubiquitous solution we want, it is a first step.
cweiss··on Early Copy Protection on the Apple II
The way folks used to duplicate disks protected by custom head-positioning schemes was through a variety of track-by-track copying programs (Locksmith, Nibbles Away, and Penulticopy were the most popular IIR) that could be fed parameter files with custom instructions for head positioning/rotation speed to duplicate the data for a given piece of software.

These parameter files were generally created by the community, who raced to be the first to gain fame publishing the keys for whatever just released or impossible-to-crack software came out. For a brief time, there was a thriving underground of parameter file traders.

I knew of someone who'd actually compiled a book of parameters, got it printed at a local copy shop and would sell it for $16 at swap meets. He eventually got a C&D from the makers of Locksmith claiming that the parameters he was publishing were covered under their copyright (even though they were created by the community). Not sure if they actually had a legal case, but he wasn't about to find out.

Without delving much past the first page, it seems like Boxen would cover a lot of this territory? Boxen [1] is a puppet-based OS-X provisioning tool used by (among others) GitHub to set up new Macs in a hurry. It does take a little while to get configured and dialed in, but once it's set up, (re)provisioning a new Mac is almost fun.

cweiss··on Soylent’s Next Chapter
FWIW - I found the 'horrific smelling gas' went away with 1.3.
cweiss··on Android 5.0 Lollipop reviewed
Maybe not the place to ask, but why is Calculator part of the core OS?
cweiss··on Announcing Soylent 1.2
The converse being "Damn, I just got my 1 month supply of 1.1 and now they come out with 1.2?!"
cweiss··on OS X Yosemite
FWIW- This was introduced in Mavericks. Easily the best feature in my book :)

Sadly, even though interface designers don't have to use the new real-estate, they still do. Even Google is guilty of this - Google Maps has interface controls at the top and bottom of the screen. This is aggravated by the fact that Maps is one of those apps people tend to use while walking (or driving), specifically when two-handed use is most inconvenient (and just plain unsafe).Folks don't care as much if Facebook or Mail takes two hands because you're far more likely to be sitting down (or at least standing still) operating them.
cweiss··on Books that have stayed with us
Agreed - I would love to see the results of the same search but with the key words "school" and "class" elsewhere in the post flagged as non-participants (unless they were part of the title). I'm guessing the results would be quite different.
cweiss··on In-flight entertainment: Bring your own
I know at least Virgin already has an extensive on-board digital content delivery system so there's already a provider that's done a lot more than Netflix in terms of aircraft VOD infrastructure. Plus, since the airline controls the content, they get to reap the advertising rewards.
cweiss··on Migrate From Oh-my-zsh to Prezto
FWIW - There is a known issue with Apple's built-in-git and the Git oh-my-zsh plugin that really slows down prompt redraws. it has to do with the way the built in Git does repository polls, I believe. The solution is to install the latest Git client (preferably via Homebrew or whatever).
cweiss··on Migrate From Oh-my-zsh to Prezto
FWIW - I'm pretty sure this is shell-independent. Happens with BASH as well.
cweiss··on Moving away from Puppet: SaltStack or Ansible?
It would have been interesting to see them add Puppet to the list of tools to evaluate (while doing their best to do so objectively as 'new users'). It seemed to me like most of the issues they'd encountered were self-inflicted, rather than the result of using Puppet specifically?
cweiss··on Updated MacBook Pros
FWIW - There's an app call CheatSheet[1] for OS-X that will display the foreground app's shortcut keys if you hold down Option for a few seconds.

cweiss··on Ask HN: How Do I Become A 'Good' Programmer... Like Everyone Else Here
What are these utilities and how would I find them? It might be worth investing in some SEO experimentation to make sure you're stuff's actually findable by those who'd be interested.

Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case, they're being DDoS'd again today (new attack).
cweiss··on Apple To Abandon Headphone Jack? Beats Deal Suddenly Makes Sense
What about all the various credit card dongles (Square, PayPal, etc) that rely on the audio jack for output? Currently, the major players give the dongles away for free because they're fairly cheap to manufacture. What happens when Apple does away with the headphone jack and forces a licensing fee for the new interface?
cweiss··on The story behind football's innovative yellow first down line
I'd seen an interview[1] elsewhere with, I believe, the founder of SportVision where they indicated that their primary source of revenue now is selling the vast amounts of telemetry data they collect during events.

His example was of the MLB, SportVision has high-resolution data on every single pitch, the MLB teams are paying through the nose for that data to run through their analytics. SportVision indicated that, based on ball trajectory, they often know more about the state of a given pitcher's health than the team or the pitcher themselves.

cweiss··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
A context-sensitive 'nag' app - Pops a simple notification (Growl-esque) when a window/URL comes to the foreground. Should support one-offs and repeating nags. Could be used to create habits as well as just follow up on the details.

Use cases:

- Remind me to CC someone when emailing someone else.

- Remind me that I need to include X information when opening a ticket on a web page.

- Remind me to use new technique X when using App Y.

- Remind me where I was when I closed this doc.

Bonus points for:

- Triggering off of typed text (like an email address or function name)

- Triggering off of a selected email subject/to/from

- "Do not show until" on one-offs (I dont need to do this until tomorrow morning)

cweiss··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
A mix of "Dont be this guy" ad messaging and emphasis on the social sharing side similar to Vine. Auto-sharing (or at least auto-queue for sharing) so you're also not 'texting' in the middle of the show right after you get the shot.

To be honest, I'd love to see it added as a feature in an existing successful photo app.

cweiss··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
A photo app designed specifically for concerts - The main feature is that the display goes dark while filming/snapping shots. As someone who goes to a lot of shows, I hate the myriad of tiny squares I see between myself and the stage and I've noticed a fairly small percentage of folks actually check focus/etc., they just stick their phones in the air and shoot away.

Bonus points for good social media integration - Read my location/4sq to know what show I'm at - Easy posting to 4sq/FB/Twitter/Compuserve.

cweiss··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
GetMeHome - A non-driving-centric nav system for the 2am crowd to safely get home from a night out. Requirements:

- UI geared for too-drunk-to-read - Big buttons, no text entry, large-type text, low clutter images.

- One button actions/options - "Go home", "Find open bathroom", "Find hotel", "Prefer Train" "Cab OK"

- EASY turn-by turn navigation for walking (large font street names with "turn left in 2 blocks"). Always update auto-routing. Bonus points for avoiding sketchy areas or using obvious landmarks ("Turn left at Bob's Transmission Shop").

- Location/time alerts for mass transit "Get off here" or "Wait here for 1:30am Blue Line Train to Hillsboro"

- Alarms for "Time to leave the club for next train" - Loud/big alarm for "Leave now for last train!"

- Since most phones seem to die around 2am, steps should be taken to be as battery conservative as possible - Walking = less frequent server polling. Also cache simple directions locally and turn off network features altogether if battery life is super low.

(edited for readability)

cweiss··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
A really good iTunes/MP3 de-duper. Should have the following all in one package: - Talks to the iTunes library file (IE - doesn't just edit the filesystem) - Undo/non-destructive final delete. - Smart/fast search that reflects how iTunes handles duplicates. Should smartly leverage the following: - Filename compare: filename/filename-1/filename-2 - Files with identical sizes, then binary compare - Metadata compare (title, album, time) - Allow auditioning of tracks - Smart delete options - Select all lower bitrate duplicates, select all filename-1, select all duplicates from path X. - Preserve/combine metadata from duplicates (IE - combine play counts, ratings, copy tag if tag in target is missing, etc). - Clean out missing items from iTunes library. - Vast amounts of idiot-proofing (list files/entries to be changed, confirmation dialogs for any modifications, etc.)

I've yet to find an iTunes manager that has all of the above - Most fail at the smart de-dupe search so when I get pages of results, I still have to audit each entry.

cweiss··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
I'd love a "Bookmark selected tabs" kind of function that lets me quickly click on a dozen or so relevant tabs. Usually, I'll have 20+ tabs open with 5-10 on a given subject, so "Bookmark All" captures a lot of useless tabs.

Better yet, a "Bookmark similar subject" plugin would be awesome - Leverage Google's search to automatically figure out tabs that are about the same thing and bookmark them by subject. Ignoring pinned tabs would be a bonus.

cweiss··on Amazon Fire TV
"This is just Apple TV for the Amazon eco-system"

Which is not an insignificant demographic. There's a whole lot of folks who actually arent invested in the Apple ecosystem, this addresses a huge market segment, regardless of whether games are included.
