cweagans··on The L in "LLM" Stands for Lying
I think that's what I was confused about: I don't see the lie in the comments above. optionalsquid said "[...]did try to implement procedural generation for the mines, but ended up scrapping it"

bombcar said "They're quasi-generated with random elements and fixed elements - similarly to early Diablo procedural generation." (which is true - you confirmed as much in the very next comment - "The levels are all hand drawn, not generated by an algorithm, even if they’re shuffled.". That's all early Diablo was doing.)

"Quasi-generated" seems like an appropriate descriptor here - stringing together level building blocks algorithmically is still "generating" a level in a sense. You're right - it's not correct to say that they were generated in the same way that an LLM generates things, but a) nobody claimed that and b) there is an undeniable element of procedural generation here.

Well, okay, you can select two specific words to fuel your apparent outrage if you'd like, but if you actually read the entire sentence, you'll see that there is some critical context that you're missing: "you have to physically touch it to activate it in the same way that you'd have to touch the Touch ID sensor."

I did not claim that it was the same security scheme or that it's biometric or anything like that. I did claim that you have to physically touch it to activate it.

Edit to add:

re 'Yubikey Nano is a "thing you have", TouchID is a "thing you are".', I would argue that your finger is in fact a thing you have. The loss of a finger might change a little of who you are depending on the circumstances that led to you losing said finger, but these both fall into "thing you have" territory for me. I don't think it's wise to consider Touch ID much more than that, personally.

You're missing that the Yubikey Nano exists. You just leave it in the port. You don't need to remove it - you have to physically touch it to activate it in the same way that you'd have to touch the Touch ID sensor.

The parent comment didn't seem to say anything offensive. Why so hostile?
cweagans··on AMD will bring its “Ryzen AI” processors to standard desktop PCs for first time
Calling it "consumer-grade RAM" is inaccurate - RAM is RAM. When you solder it to a board, you now have a DIMM that is carrying RAM chips. It's a semantic difference, but it's important.

The announcement means that they're closing Crucial - just like it says in the title and the first paragraph. The rest of that press release is outlining the mechanics of how that works + some fluff. Micron is going to continue producing the exact same memory chips in the exact same fabs. They're just not soldering it to a board, slapping the Crucial logo on it, and selling it directly to consumers. There's nothing stopping downstream vendors from buying Micron chips, soldering them to a board, and selling them to consumers as Micron was doing previously.

There's nothing in that press release that implies that the memory was somehow different (or "consumer-grade"). The _only_ thing they're saying is that they're ending their B2C business and focusing on B2B.

cweagans··on Show HN: Write native binary web apps with TypeScript and Express
Anyone know why the parent project, Tsonic, would compile Typescript to C# instead of directly to CIL? Is it because there's a closer 1:1 mapping between the language primitives or some other reason?

cweagans··on Converting a $3.88 analog clock from Walmart into a ESP8266-based Wi-Fi clock
Use reed switches behind the clock face and magnets on the (presumably) different length hands instead of hall sensors. NTP sync once per day is more than adequate for household timekeeping - it might drift a few seconds here and there, but that’s fine for most people?

That's a really neat solution. Does that mean one of the constraints you'd have to impose is that a given customer can only have as many VMs as there are addresses in the block of IPs that you own? If they tried to create another one past that, it seems like you'd have a bit of a problem on your hands - but then again, maybe that number is so high that you're not likely to run into that edge case?
cweagans··on Why I don't have fun with Claude Code
Which is (and this is true) a power tool.

It's a decent analogy though: there are many tasks for which a CNC router would be an inappropriate tool choice (e.g. you can cut dovetails on a CNC router, but it's a pain in the ass and you probably could have cut them by hand in the time it takes to set up the cut on a CNC), but for tasks where the CNC router is a good fit, very few tools can beat it.

cweagans··on Ask HN: How do you find the "why" behind old code decisions?
How did you start your SWE career in 2016/2017 refactoring a COBOL application??? Sounds like a fun story!
cweagans··on Ask HN: How do you find the "why" behind old code decisions?
The question you're actually trying to answer is unlikely to be "why is this the way that it is" and more likely to be "if I make this change, will I break anything". So just don't worry about it: make your change, open a PR, socialize it as widely as is practical, and if nobody stops you, merge it and move on. In many cases, the original "why" doesn't matter anymore. If it does, having a concrete change to look at and critique helps move the discussion along (and prevents getting trapped in hypotheticals - they can see exactly what you're trying to do if they have a PR in front of them).

Your GitHub repo and the associated medium article do a great job of describing the problem and the solution that you settled on. I don’t understand why you didn’t include a screenshot of what this looks like though. The suitability of your tool depends on what it looks like.

Please, always include screenshots in open source projects that are aesthetic in nature.

There used to be a commercially-made tv-b-gone device. Not sure if it's made anymore, but there's a DIY kit that appears to do the same thing: https://www.adafruit.com/product/73

I used to carry one with me everywhere (it was small enough to fit on a keychain). One night at a sports bar, I showed it to a friend. Before I could stop him, he pushed the button and every TV in the place went black, right in the middle of some PPV sports event. Anyway, he bought one on the spot.

I'm not worried about it. If they complain, we can address it then.
cweagans··on Contact the ISS
I've done this twice for local schools. It was an event for the entire school to listen in on. In one case, we relayed the signal from the roof of the school to another local ham's house, where he had a big antenna on a tower with alt/az control for tracking the station. That meant we could test the tracking beforehand and not worry about setting it up again at the school.

NASA also used to coordinate telephone-based contact (maybe they still do? not sure). They'd simply patch the phone call in to radio equipment that they acquired and operated for this purpose. Confirmed beforehand out of personal interest though: it was still over the ham bands.

Something really amazing happens when kids are given an opportunity to experience something like that: science goes from being a largely theoretical exercise to having some amount of practical applicability. The kids that got to actually _talk_ on the radio were incredibly curious and eager to learn as much as they could about everything. They wanted to know how radio works. They wanted to know more about orbital mechanics and how we know where to point the antenna (to the point of actually _asking_ to learn the math). They wanted to know how big the ISS was and how we even got it to orbit (which led to some model rocketry-related topics).

I imagine that it was very difficult to justify the expense of acquiring and transporting heavy amateur radio equipment to the space station (even if you're just thinking about the cost of putting the equipment into orbit - the cost is (pardon the pun) astronomical), but this kind of stuff _matters_. Making science accessible to children in a way that isn't just preparing them for the next standardized test _matters_.
