How does this fit in with offerings from Apple and Google?

Edit: Specifically HomeKit and Brillo(?)

cvburgess··on Ask HN: What's your experience with the new macbook?
I recently purchased one for the same thing: web dev, travel, and iOS development too. I had a 2014 MacBook Pro Retina that was stolen and decided to "downgrade" for the replacement. I'm honestly really happily surprised with the little silver box. Its paper thin, the keyboard is really nice after you get used to it (takes a few days). The battery lasts seemingly forever and it runs really smoothly.

Compared to my MBPR it feels just as fast if not occasionally faster. However, streaming video to the TV over airplay hasn't been as nice. If you do video heavy things like gaming or video production, its not for you. But as a programmer, I'm really, really happy.

Note: I would recommend the 1.2 GHz configuration or the 1.3 - I have the 1.2 and a lot the the reviews are saying that there is a noticeable difference between the 1.1 and 1.2 in terms of computing power.

Edit: fixed spelling and grammar.

cvburgess··on Show HN: My animated website, rendered entirely in HTML5 Canvas
While this is fantastic as a demo, I hope this does not become a huge trend. Canvas is almost as bad as flash if you use it this way
cvburgess··on Fab Lab – The Machines
This is insane for a high school web project. Kudos and props to the author. Be sure to put this on your resume!
cvburgess··on Mailbox, from Dropbox (plus 1 GB of space to your Dropbox)
Really, really wish they would add IMAP support for the rest of us that would prefer not to use Google for email. FastMail + Mailbox would be killer.

( I use Mailbox with my work email and love it )

cvburgess··on Mailbox, from Dropbox (plus 1 GB of space to your Dropbox)
For the most part I haven't had many issues, I hope they haven't given up.
cvburgess··on Show HN: Matterhorn – Your new project manager
Does anyone know if this does (or has plans to) integrate with GitHub / GitHub issues? I have a pretty similar setup with Trello right now that feeds off of various repos, but this would be a simpler setup if it integrated nicely.
cvburgess··on Startups Revolutionizing Work
I went to check out one of the companies mentioned http://www.leadschat.com/ - the website scrolling was so unusable that I struggled to learn about the product or look at screenshots... I hate to be that guy, but can we just let most pages scroll naturally?
cvburgess··on Slack Acquires Screenhero (YC W13)
according to @tptacek, you might be fine:

> There already is a Screenhero integration for Slack. If you pay for Slack, you can set it up in like 3 minutes, from slack.com/screenhero.

cvburgess··on Whatsapp Web
So what exactly is whatsapp web?

[edit] Found the answer at https://www.whatsapp.com/faq/en/web/28080003

> WhatsApp Web is a computer based extension of the WhatsApp account on your phone. The messages you send and receive are fully synced between your phone and your computer, and you can see all messages on both devices. Any action you take on the phone will apply to WhatsApp Web and vice versa.

cvburgess··on A Teenager’s View on Social Media
Facebook is not popular for groups because it does it so well, it's used for grouping because you can safely assume that 98% of your classmates have a Facebook account, know hoe to use it and even check it occasionally.
cvburgess··on The Death and Life of the 13-Month Calendar
I really like this idea - it makes scheduling things a whole lot easier. I also like the concepts of the one week month and "year day" - for some reason I feel like I'd get more pumped about year day than I'll ever get about new years.
cvburgess··on Classic arcade game TRON on a cloth modelling grid
Yeah, definitely opened the game in a tab and just listened to the music. Great job!
cvburgess··on You've been using your monitor wrong this whole time
Am I the only one that gets overwhelmed when I use my monitor in portrait? Isolating the web ( or code ) into more bite-sized chunks gives my brain one thing to focus on at a time.
cvburgess··on FastMail app for iOS and Android now available
I really wish that Mailbox would accept any IMAP provider - I use Mail.app solely for my FastMail at the moment.
cvburgess··on Firefox Developer Edition
Yup - the very same
cvburgess··on Amazon Echo
100% - but the fact of the matter is that almost ALL the Echo does is analyze audio over remote servers. If Apple is doing it, it is covert and would upset a LOT of people if they found out.
cvburgess··on Advertisers scramble as ‘non-human traffic’ eats up online budgets
I wouldn't be surprised to find that the larger firms are crawling their own ad platforms. When ads comprise 90% of your revenue, it's hard to imagine that someone hasn't gamed the system.
cvburgess··on Amazon Echo
But the primary function of the Xbox is not to record data and send it back to its servers - the main selling point of the Echo is basically smart voice data analysis. Offline, an Xbox is still useful - the Echo becomes useless.
cvburgess··on Amazon Echo
The main selling point of a macbook is not that it can identify exactly what you say, when you said it, and send that data back to a central server that is "always getting smarter". There is also a VERY big difference for me between the things that I type into my computer and the conversations I have in my home. I say many things in an imperfect form or with a dry sense of humor - I rarely save incomplete or out-of-context thoughts to a .pages file on Dropbox.
cvburgess··on Amazon Echo
This sounds like the creepiest tech product you could put in your home: an internet-connected microphone that can "hear you from across the room". Love the slick design, but I'll pass.
cvburgess··on Mac App Store: The Subtle Exodus
Steam is a pretty nice place to buy games, I didn't know they sold anything else though. Thanks for the tip!
cvburgess··on Mac App Store: The Subtle Exodus
The average user has an iTunes account and doesn't switch countries on a regular basis. For the average user, the mac app store is dead simple and easy to use.
cvburgess··on Mac App Store: The Subtle Exodus
I don't see the humor. When I bought a new mac recently, i logged into the mac app store with my apple ID and instantly had all of my apps on my new computer within 5 minutes. Over 20 apps licensed and installed in 20 minutes! In contrast, it took me the better part of a few hours to download and license Sublime Text and remember the URLs for all of the other software, let alone find and check the license keys. What could be easier?
cvburgess··on “We will sell you this microwave under the following conditions”
To be fair, Desktops don't have as much of detailed look into our lives. SMSs are very intimate, location data can pinpoint you at almost any moment, and ( for me ) i know my address book on my phone is 10x the size of the address book I had on my computer before my phone started syncing contacts across. I think it's a great direction, but one that is now more necessary than ever.
cvburgess··on Google Timer
I see where your coming from, but if you want a cross-platform timer solution, relying on a google widget seems like a reach. At the vary least they should let anyone use the timer and only force you to login if you wish to continue the session on another device.
cvburgess··on Google Timer
I actually do use DDG prolifically and have come to love all the widgets. I just think its silly for google to demand that you log in to use a glorified egg timer. Why do you need me to log in for that?
cvburgess··on Google Timer
You must be logged in to use a timer? Pass...

cvburgess··on Postgres 9.5 feature highlight: row-level security and policies
Good to know!

Although, like you said, that thread dates back to MySQL 5.0 - I wouldn't hedge my bets on it today...

Is there a "best practices" way to handle pagination of complex queries without running the query twice?

cvburgess··on Postgres 9.5 feature highlight: row-level security and policies
I would really like to see an implementation of MySQL's SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS. It's super handy for pagination.
