cuttooth··on Letter To A Young Programmer Considering A Startup
This would be (and still is) a great sentiment, but the problem is that so many startups and small development shops are looking for something that most fresh graduates/junior level developers can't offer. It's a real shame, because it appears as if there's often little to no budge, and I worry for the future of the market (and by this I mean for the other 98% of the US which isn't SF or NY) because it's a real issue that's going to start rearing its head, if it hasn't already.
cuttooth··on Elm at Prezi
Elm is the future as much as Java is dead in the software development industry.
cuttooth··on Topcoat – CSS for clean and fast web apps
They are an embarrassment and I strongly doubt that I'd be punched.
cuttooth··on Topcoat – CSS for clean and fast web apps
I didn't call anyone a name, and I wouldn't be ashamed to say it face-to-face because it is in fact what I think. I'm tired of the JS framework of the week being posted on here in some vague attempt to become the cool new thing on the block. What happened to Backbone? Not cool any more because it's remotely stable? No, of course not, because developers need to have their bespoke framework of the week.
cuttooth··on Topcoat – CSS for clean and fast web apps
Yeah, it makes a lot of sense to never have any sort of stable, widely-accepted solution built over a long period of time. Let's just keep having a new artisanal web framework of the week.

Web developers are an utter fucking embarrassment and shit like this is exactly why.

cuttooth··on Create a web app from scratch in under 5 minutes with Meteor and Mailgun
It's basically the same thing as Rails people saying "you can make a blog in five minutes!", because you really can't.

(This isn't a knock against Rails, it's just that five minutes barely gives you time to open the documentation and start to actually get an idea of how a library/framework is designed.)

cuttooth··on Watch The Moon Rise in Realtime
The moon illusion is probably the coolest thing ever.
cuttooth··on Web developer (Internship)
You should strongly consider lowering your requirements if you want to consider the position to be an "internship." As they stand, they are quite frankly absurd. Most people with two legitimate years of experience could be earning close to six figures in a full-time role (if not more, depending upon location) with expertise in the technologies you mention.
cuttooth··on Is Tokaido (rails.app) Dead?
JewelryBox is vastly underrated and undermentioned, as far as I can tell. It takes away pretty much all of the work involved with dealing with RVM and has been nothing but a great help since I first installed it a couple months ago.
cuttooth··on A new asteroid-mining company, Deep Space Industries, Inc., launches Today
EVE Online is now EVE IRL, I suppose.
cuttooth··on Hiring Hacks For Startups
"24. Send a personal note (with meaningful feedback) to every person you interview. Thank them for their time, be transparent with your decision (whether successful or not), and if appropriate, offer constructive feedback. The last point won’t work for everyone, but will be appreciated by most (reasonable) candidates, by giving them something to work on."

This is probably the best point in the entire article.

cuttooth··on Training Videos For Web Developers
Call me crazy, but I wouldn't consider 20-30 minute videos at $18 a piece to be "fairly priced," as the site alleges. There are plenty of subscription services out there which run much cheaper for a greater quantity of high-quality content, with a known reputation behind them.
cuttooth··on Show HN: Our alternative to recruiter spam
I submitted my information; it doesn't hurt to give it a try. I live in the Philadelphia area, but I'm open to relocating if the position is right, so a service such as this may be able to work for me. I'll have to see.
cuttooth··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (January 2013)
SEEKING WORK - Philadelphia, PA / Remote (Willing to relocate)

Looking for junior level Rails work, but I am also interested in anything which I can get my hands on. I presently live in Philadelphia and would place priority on working here, but I am also willing to relocate (depending upon location) and/or work remotely. I am self-taught and extremely receptive to learning new technologies. Where I lack knowledge, I gain the drive to absorb and surround myself with anything I can.

A primary project I am working on right now called "define.io" is linked below. It is a fairly simple, yet (hopefully!) effective way of allowing users to review tech products. It is in a very early state, but does have some basic functionality. All of the site's code is posted on Github (also linked below), and it is hosted using Heroku.

I primarily work with: Ruby/Rails, JavaScript/jQuery, HTML/CSS (Bootstrap), Heroku I'm interested in learning/working more with: Go, Haskell, Objective-C, Redis/NoSQL. Also open to working with: Python/Django
