cucumber3732842··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
>For the past 3 years I have replaced my ADHD stimulant medication with nicotine patches

My first thought was "That's a no brainer why didn't I think of that".

Then I remembered that I grew up during peak anti-smoking and so they made nicotine out to be some sort of borderline meth boogeyman rather than just extra addictive extra effective caffeine that comes in bad for your health form factors and that all that propaganda got sent straight to long term memory and I was indoctrinated by it at such a young age it didn't even occur to me to think outside the box like that.

Nicotine patches are expensive for what they are but they're basically free compared to meds.

cucumber3732842··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
I think if they had a big f-ing rocket at their disposal and could bundle a couple dozen of them MIRV style there would be no political downside if a bunch went splat so long as a bunch didn't

"look guys 9/24 of the rovers are transmitting back, great success"

cucumber3732842··on The End Of Upward Mobility – AI is coming for the meritocracy
I would. Furthermore, relatively kneecapping these people would probably be a long term good thing for our societal progress arc. The politics of people who have not known struggle for material comfort has been, to quote uncle Ted out of context, a disaster for the human race.

Like there's a reason every goddamn populist movement shits on "coastal elites" or "liberal white woman" or "wall street and the MBA banker class" some other boogeyman group that is invariably cut from a subset of these people. It's because the stuff they peddle is, typically bad if not fundamentally then the flavor they are peddling.

I'm sure this take will be wildly unpopular around here but I don't care.

cucumber3732842··on PDF Forgeries Are Surprisingly Rare (2022)
There are obscene amounts of "forged" stamped surveys and engineering drawings floating around.

Not like altering lines or anything material (I can already imagine the breathless replies being typed about how it's "antisocial" if someone's deck doesn't meet setbacks by 1ft or something) but changing text to remove references that would indicate other survey work was done that they don't wanna submit to public record, changing a labeled distance by a couple feet to make something that already exists technically compliant.

Like with everything else it's the little guys sticking their necks out. The big guys can afford good surveyors who "get it" and don't need to be told when a difference within the bounds of measurement error and will have four or five figure implications or that a survey result is so unfavorable that they should just call the client, bill whatever they would have charged as a consulting fee and not screw their client with the liability of a paper trail.

cucumber3732842··on How do traffic signals work? (2019)
A lot of lights exist not to add throughput, but to replace 2-way stops where less performant traffic (so like idiots, grandmas and heavy trucks) would have problems getting in, say fuggit (or get honked at, get flustered) and cause a near miss at least.
cucumber3732842··on How do traffic signals work? (2019)
"that's bad, peasants shouldn't do that, so we won't support it to make it suck"
cucumber3732842··on Winning the visa lottery
>it will get better in the 2nd and 3rd generation (it does but very slowly)

What about african americans?

What about african amercians?

It's like I'm the stupid goose in the meme.

African americans were on track to be more wealthy and less crimey, same as every other poor ethnic group in the US has done before. Irish, Italians, Poles, etc. Something went off the rails.

What happened? It ain't the skin or some societal factor that gets applied because of the skin. We got plenty of African and Caribbean immigrants to use as control groups.

(I don't expect you to answer this question, I expect this question to make a lot of people around here uncomfortable.)

>by for example pulling tricks like counting immigrants from India, Thailand and MENA together, or by not allowing the collection of data at all. This is really bad policy imo.

Agreed

cucumber3732842··on Probes into Toronto's shooter-for-hire network thwarted by impenetrable phone
"Hey guy's I've got a great idea, let's reframe our inability/unwillingness to do real police work as a technology problem in order to get the stupid peasants to not be too pissed off when we push a bill to snoop on them even more than we already do"

It's not like Toronto isn't already carpet bombed with surveillance. It's not like they don't have everyone's metadata. They could figure this out of they wanted.

Damn near every paragraph in this article is filled with unverified speculation "might be connected", "could be related". It's like text based equivalent of the scene in Anchor Man "the driver is on drugs", "we think he has a hostage or two". I bet there will be a dozen articles just like this from other cities over the next couple months.

cucumber3732842··on The senior engineer death spiral
I know a dude with a traditionally female name. Dude just job hops. The wide "HR bins 99/100 resumes" part of the filter doesn't seem to apply to him...

He's a fine guy, and a fine coworker, but he's not the hot shit his resume progression would suggest.

I guess that's worth being taunted in graded school.

cucumber3732842··on ZuckOff is a free app that sees Meta glasses before they see you
Of course that was the point. But malicious broadcast of copyrighted material to trigger automated enforcement systems sounds pretty far from "fair use" to me. Say nothing of the bad publicity when some video is just so bad it hits the news and now your IP is the soundtrack to a cop beatdown.

When you look at it from a legal "use it or lose it" and corporate risk perspective it's quite surprising that Disney didn't even sent cease and desists.

Edit: Of course you don't lose the copyright but your ability to litigate someone else's unfair use is a lot weaker when their lawyer can trot out a million examples that you were fine with.

cucumber3732842··on ZuckOff is a free app that sees Meta glasses before they see you
I bet Disney's lawyers can squeeze a lot more money out of municipalities for playing the music publicly in the first place than they can out of random citizens who are uploading to Youtube.
cucumber3732842··on What happened to the Snowden archive
More like died around 1920, if it was ever alive.

The big difference between the past and now is that today a journalist can presumably get at the "alternative facts" if they try because the internet makes secrecy much leakier much faster and makes circumstantial details more accessible. Contrast with 50yr ago Walter Kronkite had no idea how sketchy the whole Gulf of Tonkin stuff was and even if he did it's not like his employer had people doing OSint to verify things so all he could do was recite is like truth and off to war we went.

cucumber3732842··on Sherline Tools Is Going Out of Business
Burn it all. Let people build slums and concrete jungles if they deem it worthwhile.

This central planner grand vision bullshit we embarked on over the second half of the 20th century was a mistake.

cucumber3732842··on Deodands put a price on objects that caused death
>The interesting question is: Why were trains supposedly fatal to the law of deodands whereas ships were not?

Because the state has an interest in trains doing train things unfettered, an interest in not pissing off local business, especially big business.

Some foreigner's ship on the other hand...

cucumber3732842··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
Alaska has an excuse for it to be expensive. They're far away from everything.

Most of the US East coast has no such excuse.

cucumber3732842··on Google illegally retains customer data, and I am taking legal action against them
> I read this all day and am getting allergic to it. It's always the load-bearing decision worth my thought, and then some contradiction. It's not just this, it's THIS and THIS.

I kinda the mockery it makes of the "look how smart I am" internet comment types since it's basically their sort of linguistic drivel but cranked to 11.

cucumber3732842··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
>"Cars are plentiful and cheap in America and can be had next to free in many cases." What is the buzzword bingo and what is my bent?

The entire sentence after that came across like a giant dog whistle for the kind of people who are never out of arms reach of their clutching pearls. The only word you missed was "blight". I was expecting it to be followed by a call for some sort of government action.

Might just be a reflection of the language of whoever your social circle is but it came across real Karen-ey

cucumber3732842··on Landing the Space Shuttle – A Flying Machine and the Thrill of a Lifetime
Kinda funny if you think about it. The "peak" space vehicle of it's time being flown by some of the best pilots and they're approximating the approach of a student practicing an engine out landing.
cucumber3732842··on Pentagon weighs pulling nearly a third of U.S. forces from Europe
>I take no pride in being an Empire or hegemon. I know this will be ugly and disorderly and could almost certainly be handled better, but as an American,

Exactly. I'm gonna say the same thing I said when we pulled out of Afghanistan.

It's not my country and it never was. I wish them the best.

cucumber3732842··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
It's a death by a thousand cuts situation.

Everyone wants to blame existing landowners and sure they share part of it but the lion's share of the blame ought to be directed at do-gooders (land owning or otherwise) who are unwilling to be honest (with themselves, or in the internet comments) and admit that every policy that "looks good" based on the one sided statements presented in abstract by its peddlers.

Each one of those policies is part of the system that gets us the results we have and the peddlers all share in the blame.

cucumber3732842··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
The opening of your comment is a nice buzzword bingo for people of a certain bent.

Like god forbid some dude live out of a 2002 Town and Country that parks at a revolving series of strip malls eats a quart of oil every 2k.

The tent cities and the rows of campers are a different story (i.e. the density is the problem).

cucumber3732842··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
These flippers fancy themselves "liquidity providers". Like god forbid it take a couple days for someone to bite on your "too cheap" listing.
cucumber3732842··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
I've always thought that it would be cool to buy wetland and go in the reverse direction. Instead of illegally fill it illegally dredge it. Then put a house boat on it. They'll never see it coming. The whole system is designed to prevent filling.
cucumber3732842··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
You can literally tell which municipalities in my state have been hoodwinked by the Karens into adopting "pay as you throw". They're the ones where there's trash everywhere.

It's like these people can't think two steps ahead (I'd go so far as to say that's the defining feature of regulatory policy in this state). You just gave people a financial incentive to litter and dump.

cucumber3732842··on South Africa is at risk of becoming a mafia state
> Practically, violence comes from influence of competing groups within the state. And yes, US is moving towards the same regime type

The ideological and demographic makeup of certain internet communities makes them incapable of understanding what you mean by this.

cucumber3732842··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
Eventually price crashes far enough below retail that commercial users start filling out a lot of the space because the cost per square foot is lower than their own space.

Like you shove your winter PPE, your emergency stash of spare parts for process equipment, etc, etc, in some self storage lockers and get the same job done using less square footage with extensive compliance burden (or get more job done using same square footage).

cucumber3732842··on Why Arab armies don't win wars
So then why did damn near every European royal family make a habit of giving every prince and bastard son, including ones not in line for the throne, armies to go play around with?

If you're a crappy king the last thing you want is someone with a "legitimate claim" to the throne with an army to back them up instigating your court to depose you.

cucumber3732842··on The Return of Sail Power: Cargo Ships Are Turning Back to the Wind
