How appropo it's a website that's throwing it now.
Also, for a time, it totally blew away MS Visual C, although the VCL was hella inconsistent, and that was rather maddening at times.
To be at max productivity you had to scour the web looking for snippets that showed you how to, say, add strings to this widget or draw on that canvas.
The RAD implementation was rather brilliant, and for several years at least blew its main competitor, Visual Basic (ugh) totally out of the water.
IMO, the real treat is fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, not orange. Fresh grapefruit juice tastes nothing whatsoever like the stuff they sell in markets, and has a sublime flavor that's both refreshing and delicious.
I am totally unconvinced that any leader seduced by Marx would ever be someone I would care to live under.
Have you ever considered analyzing the hit progressions thru time, to see if and how our tastes change?
Also, using a self-generated formula that a hit song is probably 25% root progression, 25% melody over that progression (the hooks), and 50% lyrical content...I wonder if some attempt at integrating all three of those items could yield fruitful, interesting results.
Great work, BTW...as a lifelong musician/songwriter, I enjoy sites like yours to help gain a deeper understanding about how professionals manipulate the sonic palette to craft songs and interesting melodies.
Over the past couple hundred years, almost all full communist/socialist governments have failed, while market-based capitalistic ones have pulled billions out of abject poverty.
The idea that Facebook's "Russian meme/adverts" situation had anything to do with Trump winning is laughable beyond any reasonable measure. He won because Clinton was perhaps the worst candidate in the history of US Presidential elections, not because some Russian trolls wrote some silly crap on FB.
But I agree with your premise...FB is just being used as a big fat scapegoat so the real culprits that engineered Clinton's loss don't lose their cushy political positions.
Does anyone here really use those UML-based docs to actually learn the systems? Or do they do what I always did and use the trusty step-debugger for a few days and come up with your own mental model of them?
Inevitably, unless someone is working full time on them, they are incomplete and several months out-of-date, and that makes them worthless really.
That's my anecdotal evidence against generating them. I'm at least somewhat sure someone has a conflicting story of how UML "saved the day", but it would be so rare to my experience that I would love to hear it.
They show up at the one they told to go to, not the one that actually contains the speakers.
So what would you charge for a drug that guaranteed you would live 30 extra years after you spent 20 million to develop it?
For an added twist, let's say it's NOT FDA approved but you have solid clinical evidence that it's efficacy was solid and can your "street cred" (whatever that means in biotech) allows you access to the world's most successful (ie richest) people.
I have my answer...what's yours?
Remember, it's always bad business to kill your customers.
I think by far the more credible threat, of course, is from terrorists (foreign and perhaps even domestic, as horrific as that seems) and do hope that the superpowers of the world come up with some defense systems that are able to mitigate such attacks.
But to be honest...this new military-sponsored "killer robot" world we are barreling headlong into gives shudders to most sane, peace-loving citizens, no?
I've had at least 2 experiences with that particular tech, and I found it horribly over-engineered and a total PITA to work with.
On top of that, I still can't figure out exactly what problem its trying to solve, unless it purpose is job security to overpaid corporate contractors.
We have HTML5 and CSS for rendering and JSON for content, and we should just leave everything else be.
As I remember, population ebb-and-flow based upon available resources is something it was especially good at estimating and tracking over time, so I would imagine that any of the Sims-type games they would be quite useful.
It turns out they are damn good at estimating, over time, many things, so a little bit of research and the right game and it's not hard to see how the two could work well together.
Of course, Social only works if a critical mass of users start actively using the network...achieving that number, no matter what the underlying tech is, is a very hard nut to crack.
Not sure if applying this strategy to a game that has sold only 4 copies in 3 years would really help the situation.
Supply and demand dicate how much colleges can charge students, nothing else. If schools can charge $30k/year, and fill up the classrooms, why wouldn't they?
It's similar to the question "what's my house worth?"...the answer is exactly how much someone is willing to pay for it, nothing more and nothing less. Any real estate agent will tell you the same.
Many factors go into why colleges can charge so much and get away with it. Certainly the price distortions caused by easy-to-get guaranteed student loans is a big driver, but others exist of course.
Like anything to prevent yourself from locking up and taking the damn thing too fucking seriously.
The reality is we are all going to interview, they are going to mostly suck, and you will almost certainly eventually be hired somewhere.
All the moves were textbook.
Index funds require no special knowledge to build...just buy the S&P100 stocks in equal amounts and boom, so the fees for such a fund can be super low.
In my experience, photos get about 10x the likes of text-based posts. We can argue the exact amount, but we all must notice that pictures get far most attention then everything else, correct?
Given this, isn't that quite obviously the wrong type of validation people should be seeking?
The superficiality of how one looks should certainly not be weighted 10x over all other aspects of one's personality, and brings to mind the worst aspects of high-school-based in/out-group mechanics.
At it's best, it's simply welfare for the rich. People who look good already get the lion's share of "likes" and attention in the real world.
It hardly seems like a good thing it should be so online as well.
...if you can't bail out, you don't get any REAL credit for the time you have spent locked up when you finally go to court and get sentenced, which really rubs injury into insult and flies 100% into the face of "innocent until proven guilty" bullshit we are all told is the way the system works.
Before everyone goes off on how wrong I am, please hear me out from my POV of over 30 years getting arrested for minor shit all over the US.
For the record, I have probably done time in like...12 different county jails and been through the systems in each of those places, and have been to state prison twice (no bail issues in prisons, so I'll leave them out).
So back to my outrageous assertion...am I really saying that the judge gives you NO CREDIT for being in jail, away from your loved ones, your job (hopefully you had one), and your freedom, for all those weeks that you will wait to see him and have your case disposed of?
Yes that is exactly what I'm saying, and here is why. Let's say 2 people get arrested for, say, felony ketamine possession on Jan 1, 2019.
Richie Rich cries to mommy and get bonded out 10 hours after the arrest, and the bondsman gives him his first court date (there will be many BTW) 5 weeks out on Feb. 3rd.
Joe Street is from out-of-town and the police forget to let him get local numbers from his phone before its stowed away in his property, thus leaving him totally helpless as far as calling anyone because who in in the hell remembers out-of-town numbers these days, right?
[I use this example because this exact situation with the phone happened to me last year here in Vegas]
So Joe is officially fucked. He too gets a court date for Feb 3rd and has to sit in jail until then. Trust me. If you have never been to county jail 5 weeks will feel approximately like 2 full-fucking eternities to you.
You can't believe how bad the food is...how uncomfortable the beds are...how bad your cellmate snores...what assholes the COs are...
And mostly how incredibly shit the phone system is...it's expensive as hell (3 bucks for 15 minutes I've seen) and often the speaker or mics dont work that well due to people smashing it on the wall in frustration.
So you go to court FINALLY Feb 3rd, and there is Richie Rich! Oh man, he sure looks good in his street clothes and all groomed, while you look like pure crap with your ill-fitting jail garb..well at least you will be going home today, you think as you happily sit in the freezing cold holding cell and listen to people right next to each other scream at almost the top-of-their-lungs to just talk about their situation.
Your head is pounding and you have been up since 4am sitting on hard-ass concrete for 5 hours...but HELL YEAH YOU ARE GOING HOME TODAY I'll take whatever probation they give me today..who cares how much I just NEED TO GET THE FUCK OUTTA THIS JAIL!
And then, of course...you never even see the judge. This is "arraignment" dipstick and everyone knows you can't plead at arraignment. Your totally overworked assigned public defender hands you his card and silently signs "call me" because its so fucking loud still.
Then, in horror, you look down at the card and see your next court date is 3/18...HOLY SHIT ANOTHER 6 WEEKS ARE YOU KIDDING???
So I could go on relaying horror after horror, but I will stop here and get to the damn point. At the end, both you and Richie Rich get 3 years felony probation!!
Let that sink in...you have sat in hell for maybe 4 months (sometimes 8 or 9!!) while Richie has been doing his thing in the real world, yet you both end up with the same sentence.
And that's what I mean when I say that you basically get no credit for not being able to bail out. This is a 100% true story and I have seen it play out just like this perhaps a hundred times.
Is AWS Lambda really "serverless", or is the server part just buried so deep in the stack that the app devs can disregard it?
And if it is truly "serverless", what mechanism is being used to "serve" the function calls? How is this radically different from say a REST-api that auto-routes function names from url POSTs and GETs?
I suppose I could look all this stuff up, but to be honest having a quick rundown of this tech stack here on HN sure would save me the time.
Thanks in advance.
Florida, for example (where I am from), is a retirement state mostly. You know what retirees reliably vote for? Fucking hard-ass law and order so they can drink their booze and eat their prescription dope without the fear of being robbed.
I see no chance that any politicians can ever win in Florida with a message of "soft on crime", so its depressing to think that this crap and injustice justice will ever be fixed.
And you know...it's hard to blame them for wanting that. They have worked their asses off their whole lives and now want to live the remaining years feeling safe.
And yes...the "one bad apple" metaphor always rears it's old ugly head when it comes to this topic. Hell, I've lived in the Florida DC and I personally saw inmates who would enjoy busting up any new "liberal" program as long as it got them an extra cigarette or a can of soda.
They literally couldn't give a fuck about anyone but themselves at that moment, and see any program that may be put in place to help inmates as security-bypass vectors that are to be exploited as soon as possible.
One group "increased incarceration" definitely has a non-marginal positive impact on are all-of-the-above.
Can you show me any examples, anywhere in history, where a group that directly benefits from and controls the entry level and duration of access have ever decided to lower their wages and put at jeopardy their livelihoods?
Because at the heart of it, that's the real effect that decreasing incarceration will have...closing jails, firing police officers, lowering ridiculous attorney fees, and shutting down county court complexes.
And we are surprised when the very people whom benefit from the status quo don't see things the way we do?
I've enjoyed the rants of Alex Jones in the past, just like I've enjoyed Joe Scarborough at MSNBC, Rush Limbaugh, Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann, and even Art Bell, so I find this coordinated attack and take down of one of these outlets to be worrisome.
Are we going to accept this current meme that "hate speech" (whatever the hell that is currently defined as) can only come from the Right?
If so, I'll pass on that idea...it's totally political in nature if that's the case and the last thing that I believe is helpful to the world is to have one political viewpoint, Right or Left, to totally run the show.
I think examples of Mr. Jones's banning "hate-speech" should be required if these companies are going to revoke his 1st Amendment protections and censor him, if nothing else then to warn others where the line is to be drawn.
Post-modern philosophers will quite correctly argue that you can no very little about things just by observing them, and in fact can never get close to complete knowledge that way.
