I am sorry but did you just say that bureaucracy is against the will of the government? Bureaucracy is the government!
cubancigar11··on How Snobbery Helped Take the Spice Out of European Cooking
India still has the largest population of vegetarians. Today, even in big cities, you will have trouble finding a house on rent if you tell land lord that you are a non vegetarian. Similarly alcohol has a very poor history in India since it was ruled by Muslims for several centuries before the British Raj. Salting and drying are indeed used, in as much as pickles involve it. But meat doesn't come onto picture at all. Spices themselves are dried and don't go bad. Extremely spicy food doesn't too. Warmer climate + fertile gangatic planes also lend themselves to widespread farming.

In contrast, Europe had to import spices and thus the common people didn't have access to spices. Cold weather also pushes people towards hunting by making farming difficult. Obvious outcome is potato, making beer from potato, eating meat, drying meat (steaks).

cubancigar11··on The Lonely End: in aging Japan, thousands die alone and unnoticed
I think the problem is present in all the countries where traditional marriage system has been broken. The only difference between USA and Japan will be that you can find old-homes very easily in USA. Japan being a very conservative country that prides itself over 'protecting' all the bad symptoms of its culture will not solve this problem because, ironically, they think that this is what makes them 'Japanese'.
cubancigar11··on I spent the last 15 years trying to become an American and failed
See, all that money that employers are hoarding and that native-born employees have a birth right to get, is coming from foreign. By design. Forcefully imposed by USA in the first place. Most countries were very happy with closed markets until USA decided to force-feed them globalization in the name of democracy and free-market. It killed all the local businesses by cheaper larger American companies. So it was fun when USA had the full control of production line. At that time most Americans, your parents and their generation, didn't do anything for long term benefits and said - "oh well, it's next generation's problem". (It is the same issue you will see with people saying global climate change is not an immediate concern, btw.)

So now labor is also globalized. And hence you have a cheaper larger pool of resources which is killing the local entitlements. If you want to fix it you really need to become more socialist, create unions, and start lobbying your government.

But here is the thing - most Americans aren'y actually in the same shitty situation as the people in other countries who had just gotten out of colonial rule and ended up with globalization before being prosperous. Most Americans are still driving gas guzzlers while being 'unemployed'. Pray that they grow a brain before the tide swings too far to the other side, like it has in most other countries where USA is trying to destroy local markets.

cubancigar11··on I spent the last 15 years trying to become an American and failed
"If we started being serious about cutting immigration, there would be more political pressure for these foreign countries to get their shit straight."

Spoken like someone who never had the idea of moving to another country.

Here is the problem - those 12% unemployed will still walk around pretending that USA is the bestest country in the world where people have 'gotten their shit together', than to move to a different country and get a job - something that is unbelievably insanely easy if you are an American citizen.

cubancigar11··on I spent the last 15 years trying to become an American and failed
H1B is basically how big companies remain 'leen' enough to compete with start-up. This is made very clear in Amazon and PayPal India offices afaik, but sounds reasonable enough to be generalized. It is impossible for a large company with thousands of employees to remain competitive without the crunch-culture of startups. So they get H1Bs.

Well they learned it from their master.

Not joking. This is what American Indians say when I argue about corruption or workplace politicking - that Americans are much worse and much better at pretending it doesn't exist.

cubancigar11··on Why are more than 10M homes vacant in India?
Land is a boom waiting to go bust. Unfortunately, most naysayers are currently basking in seriously ridiculous amount of cash :P
cubancigar11··on Why are more than 10M homes vacant in India?
Thanks. It should be understandable that young people do not have enough patience to get what they want by way of voting or talking to MLA/MPs.
cubancigar11··on Why are more than 10M homes vacant in India?
It is completely true. Actually, most of the problems in India can be traced back to previous generation (current old generation). They:

1) Did the most corruption. It wasn't that bad before it.

2) Created all the draconian laws to 'correct' Indian culture.

3) Put pressure on current generation to 'own a house' at the age of 25-30, while they themselves like all the people before them got their house at the ripe age of 50-60.

4) Themselves a product and participant of socialist government with anti-private business attitude, they increased the age of retirement for government jobs. You meet one government employee and tell him/her that you work for some IT company and they will mock you for 'getting undeserved salaries' and 'being ignorant of bureaucracy', whether it is for getting a passport or driving license.

cubancigar11··on New York judge grants writ of habeus corpus to two chimpanzees
Modders need to be more careful in modding. The difference between AI/robot and humanity is indeed a biological one. I know that giving important to sex is something geek culture frowns upon, but when we are talking about 'creating' a different organism, I don't see why pointing out the blatant difference is such a problem.
cubancigar11··on New York judge grants writ of habeus corpus to two chimpanzees
Unless you think a sentient AI will be created by having sex, that statement is meaningless for this discussion.
cubancigar11··on New York judge grants writ of habeus corpus to two chimpanzees
And now you will die and your children will have the full authority to give birth to something new and different.

And that is the whole debate here. Are we willing to let humanity end so AI can give birth to a better AI? I think not.

cubancigar11··on Is This Justice? Charging an Eighth Grader with a Felony for “Hacking”
Somehow the society is geared towards saving young pregnable wombs. Leave your wife? Pay maintenance. Have a kid that doesn't live with you? Pay maintenance. Don't pay maintenance? Go to jail. Kids is murderer. Whhaa? Poor baby.
cubancigar11··on Is This Justice? Charging an Eighth Grader with a Felony for “Hacking”
Let me guess. That country is India and that rape was a group-rape with 3 other adults and this 1 minor boy. A country where more than 50% of rape cases involve ex-girlfriends and ex-boyfriends and where not marrying a girlfriend is considered rape.

Did you participate in that candle march?

Lets not be careful at all at uploading some basic truths - minors are minors and we _adults_ can't change the definition based on our communal level of outrage.

cubancigar11··on x*sin(y)
You don't need to do fourier transforms to do this. You can do it yourself and it is quite fun actually. It has been 13 years since I last did it but here is how you start:

1. Have a set of interesting graphs. sin(x), tan(x), log(x), e^x, 1/x, polynomials, hyperbola, sqrt(x)

2. Learn the effects of replacing x with f(x) -> sin(f(x)), log(f(x)), e^f(x). This is IMHO the most fun part. How will sin(1/x) look like? How will log(mod(sqrt(x))) look like?

3. Have a set of 'tricks'. What is the difference between sin(x) and sin(x) - A (ans. it moves the whole graph downward on y-scale). How to create mirror? (ans. take modulus). How to enlarge a graph? (ans. multiply with a constant).

4. Tackle the actual problem, edge by edge.

I just want to add that Indian governments have always canceled debts of farmers (who make up the majority population) in election year. So this kind of measure is neither novel nor unprecedented, as the article in WaPo suggests.
cubancigar11··on Why Men Love War (1984)
It is an evolutionary trait that will reflect in all sorts of places as the society becomes more complicated and then even more. Nobody had to worry about suicide bombers before someone thought of inventing bombs or religion or institutions to promote either one of those. And those institutions were not created with an end goal of suicide bombers, they were created with 'good' thought, ultimately to make the creator look more important and powerful. I hope you get the gist of my argument.

Regarding my comment being sexist - true. But one has to acknowledge the differences of sexes before aiming for equality.

cubancigar11··on Why Men Love War (1984)
Mark my word: powerful. Confidence comes from power. As we move from a largely physical domination to intellectual domination, the form power takes is also changing. So is the form of violence. It is not just true between men and women but in general.

A cave-man or a hunter (man) has only one meaning of powerful - physical. Today the meaning is changing, and Obama is powerful without having much body strength. Whether he is violent or not is something I will let you decide. But my point is that the anti-physical violence rhetoric one hears all day long is only a very recent phenomena and is directly related to what is considered more powerful today - war or politics.

NOTE: To people marking down my answers, what are your opinions about 'why women love cooking?' because statistically more women are found cooking than not, and 'why blacks like slavery?' because statistically more blacks were slaves than not? (HINT: Django Unchained anyone?)
