ctas··on Apple’s Use of Swift in iOS 13
I do, without good reason. I never programmed for iOS. I learned it for fun and now it's my favorite language. I use IBM Kitura for server-side development because of it's well designed API.

The ecosystem is indeed the greatest downside. A lot of the existing libraries are also polluted with UIKit code making them unusable on Linux. Just recently wanted to use an existing API client of some social network, but couldn't, because it contained UIKit code. Forking it and fleshing out the parts needed feels kinda wrong.

ctas··on Jsonbox – A HTTP based JSON storage
What's supposed to happen to his expenses? You assume that the creator is running the service on a host with auto-scaling enabled? If it runs on $5 DO droplet it will simply not be able to handle all requests. Sounds fine to me for a free service.
ctas··on Plus – A superset of PHP that makes PHP cool again
I would actually love to use Hack if it would have more public backing beyond Facebook.
ctas··on Germans Grow Frustrated with Their Slow-Poke Internet
I don't know about that. Thanks for the link.

I ordered service from 3 service providers and each of them called me a month after ordering and told me that Telekom is telling them there are technical problems and my bandwidth target of 50 MBit is impossible to deliver, so they aren't able to serve me.

I called Telekom after that and they told me everything is fine and aggressively tried to convert me to a customer. Tried another provider after that, still failed, so I went with...Telekom...and who would've thought...a week after that I had internet again.

ctas··on Germans Grow Frustrated with Their Slow-Poke Internet
I live in Central Berlin and the issue is present here as well. I had to choose the Telekom, one of the most expensive providers, because they intentionally blocked requests from other providers to service me with internet in my apartment.
ctas··on Ask HN: How do you read and understand an open-source project?
Start with the available documentation.

After that, getting an abstract overview over the packages/modules and their responsibilities is key IMO. It helps you understand the structure and how the logic is tied together.

Developers often stay away from contributing to open source projects, because of the initial hurdle to understand a large grown code base written by someone else.

My team and I are currently building a developer productivity tool. The goal is to help developers grasp code quicker with visuals / graphs. If anyone’s interested — preferably OSS maintainers, contributors — feel free to reach out. We would love to get some feedback.

ctas··on Introduction to Genetic Algorithms
Not sure if @vanderZwan meant the same, but what about scenarios in which your goal is to pick the best member of an already existing population where each member has a set of variables like agility, strength, speed. Would it be possible to find a pareto-optimal solution with genetic algorithms, maybe even with priority-parameters?
ctas··on Ask HN: How did you find your side project partner?
I found my last co-founder on CoFoundersLab. Always open for new adventures btw.
ctas··on Belly.io – Curated List of Programming Coding Streamers
I've been streaming on Twitch for about a year, before pausing it. It was a lot of fun as I'm a very talkative person, but in my opinion requires a lot of discipline. Sessions were sometimes subnormally unproductive because I was constantly distracted by the chat and getting pulled into complex conversations. Setting a timer for myself to ignore the chat for 20 minutes helped a bit though.

Pros:

  - meeting new people, sharing ideas
  - if you're lucky and have a lot of experienced people in the chat they can help you out and spot bugs, potential mistakes, etc.
Cons:

  - can be highly distracting and productivity-lowering
There might be more, but those are the most prominent things I can think of right now.
ctas··on Ask HN: Would you like to receive or provide mentorship?
I offer private mentoring in full-stack development and more on a regular basis. I believe most mentoring relationships start with the people around you, at least mine did. I'm not sure how well a directory like this would convert for the individual mentors, but I think it's a great idea to try out.
ctas··on Ask HN: How to Negotiate for Job Offer?
A short but great guide [1] was written by Haseeb Qureshi on how to negotiate job offers. If I'm not mistaken, he was hired by AirBnb about a year after finishing a coding bootcamp.

ctas··on Racket 7.3
Might be that non-www doesn't get redirected. Thanks for letting me know. Try this https://www.racketjobs.com.
ctas··on Racket 7.3
No they don't. AFAIK they moved away from Racket. I once contacted them for potential open positions I could list on racketjobs.com (I'm the creator).
ctas··on Ask HN: Best Personal Sites?
I'm totally jealous about https://www.monokai.nl/ and https://shauninman.com/pendium/. IMO some of the best personal sites.
ctas··on As German Bund Yields Head to Zero, They Still Beat U.S. Treasuries
I own German Bundesanleihe and I wonder what stops anyone buying units that were released 20 years ago. Some of them yield around 4%. Of course they expire within the next 4-8 years which is still enough time to profit. Maybe I'm missing something...
ctas··on Show HN: Emoji Feedback Widget
Hi, thanks for the feedback. Very much appreciated. What kind of pricing model would you recommend instead?
ctas··on The Problem with Feedback
Canny is awesome. I've had huge problems getting feedback for my profitable side projects, so I built https://www.emojion.io (same goal, different approach) to drastically reduce the barrier for visitors and see there, within one week over 200 useful user responses were submitted. I usually spend half an hour a day responding to the feedback and maybe adjusting my roadmap. It definitely changed my workflow and my users are happy to be heard.
ctas··on Ask HN: Online banks where I can open account worldwide?
Please don't use N26! There've been major security vulnerabilities in the past [0]. I wouldn't trust them with my money.

ctas··on Ask HN: Companies using Racket?
It's actually cheap compared to other job boards, which usually charge 250+ for 30-60 days, giving you access to a pool of highly relevant developers. Not trying to say, that it couldn't be free of course.
ctas··on Ask HN: Companies using Racket?
Great to hear. How can I contact you? You can mail me at cihan(at)tas.fm
ctas··on Ask HN: Companies using Racket?
That's sad to hear. I started learning Racket as my first Lisp. Not because I had to, but because I wanted to. I guess that's a major point, especially when it comes to exotic languages like Racket, that just don't look and feel like the everyday programming language you play around with in your college time.
ctas··on Ask HN: Companies using Racket?
Thank you. I like the idea that Racket tackles each domain specific problem with its own language. I'd also be happy to see it used more often in the industry, especially since there's a growing ecosystem of libraries, tutorials, and other resources that ease the start into Racket.

Regarding the subscription: I'm using Mailchimp. A confirmation mail should've been sent out, if you subscribed. I will look into it. Thanks for pointing that out.

ctas··on Ask HN: Companies using Racket?
Thank you. I already watched the presentation, but couldn't find any open job positions in regards to Racket. I'll try to contact them directly and will see if I have some luck.
