ctas··on Give me /events, not webhooks
Can you share a bit about how these events are stored on Stripes backend e.g. Kafka, Postgres?
ctas··on Mumble: Open-Source, Low Latency, High Quality Voice Chat
I've made a similar experience with Discords login flow. It's definitely broken. Fair enough.
ctas··on Mumble: Open-Source, Low Latency, High Quality Voice Chat
> The initial suggestion was to use Discord, but I luckly averted that.

Why is Discord not a good choice in your opinion?

ctas··on Sublime Text 4 [video]
I'm building something like that. Feel free to reach out, would love to chat.
ctas··on We are far from a better Heroku for production apps in a hyper cloud
Interesting. On Dokku installing postgres and redis takes just two commands. How would the equivalent look on piku?
ctas··on Melting permafrost cause huge underground methane explosions in Siberia
Are there any pictures of what's inside the hole? After melting permafrost uncovered many items of archeological interest, I wonder what one may find in one of these craters.
ctas··on Launch HN: Jiga (YC W21) – Faster custom parts for hardware products
I'm currently designing an ergonomic keyboard with capacitive switches. I was considering to manufacture the prototype myself, but this looks like an exciting alternative. Curious to see how affordable the prices are even for low units.
ctas··on JITX – Software-Defined Electronics
This looks interesting. I've been planning to design a PCB for a capacitive keyboard this year and wonder if this is suitable for a developer who's not an EE. The capacitors must be positioned according to the keyboard layout. This tool appears to do the layout for you. Am I right?
ctas··on FreeBSD 2020 Q4 Status Report
I'm also using FreeBSD 12.2 Stable with KDE and SDDM. The initial setup is pretty straightforward, but I agree that every now and then I it can get really annoying. Today I tried to install VirtualBox 6 and realised that it installed v5, even though v6 is already more than a year old. Even the ports included v5.
ctas··on Germany will violate international agreements with Unitary Patent, says FFII
I don't consider her being in the conservative party the actual problem.

In Germany she's well known for nepotism and corruptness, even if until this day she successfully evaded the punishment. Not long ago there's been a claim that her phone contains important evidence in support of the accusation, but it turned out that data on the phone had been "accidentally" wiped.

ctas··on Bakeware – Compile Elixir applications into single executable binaries
I believe GraalVM[0] makes your wish come true. It allows you to compile your Java code into a single binary and offers other features which makes Java a feasible solution for CLI tools.

ctas··on Show HN: TinyPilot – Build a KVM over IP using a Raspberry Pi
It has a lot of latency indeed. I tried the raspberry as a Steam Link alternative, but as far as I know the ethernet port is not suitable (?). I've also read that it actually gets worse if you plug in any USB peripherals. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
ctas··on Ask HN: How do you RSS?
I'm using my self-built reader called Feedist (not public) . It's extremely lightweight and built in boring PHP. The most important feature to me is the personal recommendation page which shows me the top 50 new posts in my subscribed feeds based on my previous reading behavior. It uses almost the same scoring algorithm as HN behind the scenes. It's so accurate and saves me a ton of time. Subscribing to a lot of feeds creates a lot of noise and this makes it easier to find content I might enjoy.
ctas··on Gravity: An embeddable programming language without any external dependencies
Calling it cancer is a bit hard. But I agree that semicolons are likely unnecessary.
ctas··on Gravity: An embeddable programming language without any external dependencies
The similarity to Gravity is astonishing.
ctas··on Gravity: An embeddable programming language without any external dependencies
Did anyone use Gravity before and make a comment about the ecosystem / community growth perspective?
ctas··on A look at modern PHP
My startups running on PHP and I definitely don't regret it. The language is simple, you have easy access to talent, knowledge, and thousands of mature libraries. Most of the times boring is better.
ctas··on Ask HN: Starting over after business failure
I've been there. If you want to chat (and maybe even work on something together), mail me.
ctas··on Linux Kernel Development and Writing a Simple Kernel Module (2018)
That is correct, but hasn't happened, yet. My comment also applies to DriverKit which is Apples "modern" solution to run userspace Kernel extensions.
ctas··on Linux Kernel Development and Writing a Simple Kernel Module (2018)
I wish there would be more guides like this for macOS KEXT development. Easy to read, clean code examples, and quick to get started.

I was planning to port a driver for a specific PCI 802.11 NGFF WiFi device from FreeBSD or Linux, but it's really hard to find exhaustive guides on KEXT development, whereas Linux has the amazing guide at https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/driver-api/80211/inde....

ctas··on Ask HN: How do I learn C properly?
You use Lisp to write C (on Microcontrollers)? Would appreciate more info on that.
ctas··on Ask HN: Is RSS dead?
RSS/Atom still has its place and for many is still the favorite way to subscribe to content on the internet. I built my own feed reader just a few months ago. On top of it I added a simple recommendation algorithm based on statistics of my reading behavior and article topics. I prefer the simplicity and accessibility of RSS. The standard itself plays more or less a secondary role nowadays. The various feed readers building on top it are still innovating and still attract new users.
ctas··on Ask HN: Where did you find your co-founder?
Yes, including technical cofounder.
ctas··on Ask HN: Schedule of a solo founder?
Solo since 2017. Working from home has a negative impact on my productivity. Family members and friends assume you're available for smalltalk and other stuff just because you're at home and not at work. I like working from home. It's warm and comfy. Food and drinks are a minute away. I consider myself very productive nonetheless, because I adjusted my daily routine to my environment and don't try to force it the other way around.

So about a year ago I started waking up at 5 o'clock. It's awesome after getting used to it. It's quiet, sometimes still dark outside and nobody can distract you. I can put on my headphones and just hack away. I usually start by taking a piece of paper and write down a couple of things/features/bugs I want to take care of that day. The items on the list were usually spread out across Github issues and projects Kanban boards, but I bring them together one more time. The goal is to realistically summarise the ideal day on a single sheet. I then prioritise and guess the time effort of each task. I start with the most important + least time. I want to look at the list at the end of the day with 8/10 items ticked off. Helps stay motivated and not get burned out. It's very likely I'll get distracted or just throw the towel after 5-6 hours of work. It's much easier to do that if you've already finished a good amount of work. I mostly optimize towards self-happiness. It's not a war you win on a single day. I know a lot of people that are unhappy with themselves and their progress on side projects because they often start with tasks that are too large and they have nothing to push to prod at the end of the day. In between of work I eat with my dad and girlfriend, sometimes have smalltalk for half an hour, but that's about it. I stop working at 8pm and play a round of monopoly against my girlfriend or watch a movie with her. Good time to talk about how your day was like and so on. I sometimes struggle with it, but it's important to dedicate time to your loved ones, even if you think that every minute you don't work on your project is lost money. They're usually the ones that support you the most.

I consider solo founding a 24/7/365 job. It's hard and a lot of pressure, but its one of the few things I enjoy most in life, because each day and every single item you tick off your todo list fully benefits you and not your employer.

(Sorry, the comment turned out a bit chaotic.)

ctas··on Elixir v1.10
My team and me rely heavily upon Elixir and the Beam VM within our startup and couldn't be happier. I'm glad to see continuous improvements beyond the acquisition of Plataformatec.
ctas··on IntelliJ IDEA 2020.1 EAP is open
Really excited about the speed improvements they promised for this version. Even on a machine with 16GB RAM and increased max. memory for the JVM the UI just feels too slow.
ctas··on Personalized news recommendations and privacy are not mutually exclusive
> The trivial solution is then: increment the count for each of the tags when a user visits a page with those tags. In top news, show the stuff at the top with the highest tag count.

Just last week I started building a feed reader which does exactly that.

Feeds are more like entire newspapers, but maybe you're only interested in the tech articles. You can build up a weighted distribution of keywords over time which describe the current interests of the user, using the approach you described. And all you need to do to make it work is read as usual.

If you want to try it out: https://www.feedist.io It's still in beta but will very likely leave it next week.

ctas··on Ask HN: Who's Looking for a Co-Founder?
Would love to chat. Ping me (email is in profile).
ctas··on Ask HN: Who's Looking for a Co-Founder?
Ping me.
ctas··on Ask HN: Who's Looking for a Co-Founder?
I'm a full-stack developer building a visual code intelligence tool to help developers understand code faster.

Already built profitable SaaS successfully in the past.

Looking for someone with a network of decision makers (senior developers, team leaders, or above) to jump in the role of the CEO, or knowledge in PLT and/or graphics programming.
