csbartus··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (December 2024)
SEEKING WORK: Senior / Lead React Front-end Developer, Design Engineer -- Part time

- Location: Europe

- Remote: Yes

- Willing to relocate: Maybe

- Technologies: React, TypeScript, Next.js, Design systems, XState, Functional software architecture

- Résumé/CV: http://metamn.io/

- Email: bartus.csongor@gmail.com

I have dual skills: a degree in Computer Science and UI/UX design works featured in online galleries.

In the last 15 years I've been designing and developing websites and applications. From back-end to front-end, from architecture design to UI/UX design, on different stacks. I've built and managed front-end teams, shaped products.

Right now I focus on React and I can be helpful in a couple of ways:

- Leading, guiding React teams to produce high quality code

- Designer / Developer communication

- Design Engineering: Building robust design systems, rapid prototyping new ideas or features, shaping product design

I prefer a part-time job because I run a research and development studio focusing on correct software: https://www.osequi.com/

If you are interested in likely-correct React apps, or planning to train your AI to generate React apps, then I'm available full time.

csbartus··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
I'm about to finish my first provably / likely correct software.

The concept, data, and behavioral models are all formal without using formal methods. Think category theory, normal forms and finite-state machines here.

The presentation layer / the visual mapping model is semi-formal using design systems. Think here a usual component library / design system with a closed API, aka tailor made components without styling props.

The rest, that small amount of hand-written code is tested with 100% code coverage.

The concept and behavioral models are created with visual diagram editors, the data model is generated. Think Stately.ai here, and the diagrams-as-code paradigm.

Any practicality in this?

Yes, it solves two major developer pain points: Code architecture and State management: https://2023.stateofjs.com/en-US/usage/#top_js_pain_points

csbartus··on My Knowledge Lakehouse
Very cool ideas! Very simple concept, indeed!

It helped to pin down my own approach, which is a very similar workflow, with these differences:

- The log entries are flashcards with ID

- The structure / tree follows the scientific method, aka the glue is not ad-hoc.

- So far I need no lists, because I only learn things and I'm not tracking any activity

csbartus··on Show HN: Anytype – local-first, P2P knowledge management
Finally, a well designed product site !!!

This space (Notion & co) is extremely crowded. If a player invests heavily into UX, from the start, that signals they are in the long run. Confident, at least.

Subscribed to the newsletter and wishing the best for the company to deliver good news.

csbartus··on Eigensolutions: Composability as the Antidote to Overfit
Nice thread! Finally!

I 'know' Lea Verou since ~2010. She is a household name in web design and development. Like A List Apart, Chris Coyier, Eric Meyer.

I've read regularly her articles and used her tools for years. I'm not in web design and development anymore; more like category theory, functional programming - thus composition.

The title caught my eye. I wasn't expecting these words in a web design and development article; wasn't expecting these words around 'composability'. I read papers almost daily and I'm used with 'strange new' words.

I read also the article. It's far from being enjoyable, clear, useful, linking explicitly the term composition to this domain. Maybe we should step back a little bit and try to simplify things. They 'compose' better.

csbartus··on All code is technical debt
I think code / coding is overrated. Coding is debt.

If we look at math / category theory we have functorial semantics, which means semantics (code) is auto-generated from syntax (design): https://www.algebraicjulia.org/assets/slides/nist-workshop-2...

If we look in another direction we see LLMs which (will one day) generate code from design.

If I look back those years in my career, I was always paid to write the same code all over again (lists, trees, tables, menus, user profiles, shopping carts, dashboards, heroes, apis, databases...), each time in a different context (given by the company) ... Such a waste of my time, and my employers money.

Today at least in the MVP / startup scene coding is debt / obsolete. Startups all should go no-code.

Later, after the startup phase, companies should focus _only_ on provably-correct, likely-correct understanding of their problem domain, on a design specific to their audience, and rapid iteration. The rest, coding, should be not no-code, but fully automatic yet provably correct (in the sense of total and partial correctness)

I hope, and I wish coding will be eliminated. It's a big fun writing machine code in Assembly, algorithms in C/C++, full-stack web apps in Ruby on Rails, and user interfaces in React.

But after a while it's not sustainable neither emotionally nor economically.

csbartus··on MemoryCache: Augmenting local AI with browser data
> Instead of data going to models, we need models come to our data which is stored locally and stay locally.

That's the most important idea I've read since ChatGPT / last year.

I'll wait for this. Then build my own private AI. And share it / pair it for learning with other private AIs, like a blogroll.

As always, there will be two 'different' AIs: a.) the mainstream, centralized, ad/revenue-driven, capitalist, political, controlling / exploiting etc. b.) personal, trustworthy, polished on peer networks, fun, profitable for one / a small community.

If by chance, commercial models will be better than open source models, due to better access to computing power / data, please let me know. We can go back to SETI and share our idle computing power / existing knowledge

csbartus··on Stanisław Lem's vision of artificial life
Big fan of Lem! I've read all his books translated to Hungarian (around 7-8 at that time). And collected some insights, quotes not just about AI but politics, culture, society, (bio)engineering, etc. : http://metamn.io/gust/whats-next/

Still fascinated how many of his predictions ~50 years ago came true today.

And still fascinated by his method for predictions: Don't predict, but sense / record the visible horizon.

csbartus··on HTML First
Agree.

I've created my first website in 1999 with plain HTML, CSS, vanilla JS, hosted on Geocities.

Since then I've been using PHP/WordPress/Yii/Laravel, Ruby/Rails/Sinatra/Jekyll, React/Typescript, ClojureScript to create both sites and apps.

With React / TSX components / CSS-in-TS / Effects / Context I'm home. Finally a fully fledged programming language for the web / front-end. A language made explicitly for the front-end, built om modern principles like functional, reactive programming.

Now I can do software development. Before that, with HTML, CSS, plain JS, PHP it was ... just hacking, nothing else. (Rails was good for full-stack, was not shining on the front-end)

I'll skip frameworks when the web stack will be ready for the apps, too. Now it's (perhaps) good enough for sites, I should admit.

csbartus··on Indian teen chess grandmaster beats Magnus Carlsen in online rapid tournament
I'm actively following chess. I was confused by the article title since I know Magnus was playing recently with somebody else (Le, Quang Liem) in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

After reading the article I've got more confused. When this is happened? What tournament? Which game format?

Finally I've realized this is just another PR stunt / clickbait / classic media article / yellow journalism and I'm just wasting my time.

csbartus··on Things you notice when you quit the news (2016)
A brief summary of my experience:

1. I never had a TV

2. I've read print newspapers (local, international) every day for a decade

3. I've read online news (local, intl) every day for more than a decade

4. I've never was active (neither reading the feed nor posting something) on any social network except Tumblr for visual inspiration

5. Today I read just one single online hyperlocal news portal, beside tech news (Hacker News + newsletters)

The takeaways:

a. Less anxiety.

News are, well, inaccurate since Pulitzer / yellow journalism. Their major function is to keep you on a constant stress level. Which is good on tech news, hyperlocal news -- where you can act, but not good on national and international level -- where you are just a simple spectator.

b. Less biased. I know that I know nothing, so I'm listening everybody and trying to make sense what's happening around.

csbartus··on How tumblr became popular for being obsolete
After 10 years I've stopped checking my Tumblr feed last year. It's nothing new there anymore in the graphic / web design / typography inspiration area. Everybody left, the algorithm is dumb, no more joy.

However I'm grateful for Tumblr. It shaped my design career considerably, and give me joy every day for years in row.

csbartus··on Ideas Want to Be Shared
I guess this is already happening in web development, at least, but we’ve seen in operating systems and perhaps everywhere code (GPT-3]

And if software eats the world, perhaps it will eat patents, too,

csbartus··on Mozilla Foundation pausing cryptocurrency donations
Finally an impartial institution goes after the crypto/climate question and will disclose the results in an open source fashion. That will be a milestone.

Perhaps the question is: do banks / fiat money institutions cause more damage to climate, or crypto mines. My gut feeling is a close tie.

csbartus··on Use spacer components instead of CSS margins (2020)
