crystalmace··on 5-year-old Ocean Beach boy exposes Microsoft Xbox vulnerability
Oh sure. When he bypasses child locks he gets rewarded by his parents and Microsoft. When I bypassed child locks and parental controls when I was younger, I got in trouble and my computer taken away. :D
crystalmace··on Test post please ignore...
Here's a comment on a self post to test if those work too.
crystalmace··on Ask HN: What under $100 item would you recommend everyone buy?
I agree a ton with this. I liked to read before getting an ereader, but since then my reading has grown exponentially simply because it is so easy to put new books on it. Now I am rereading a lot of books that I used to love but couldn't make it to a library to borrow. I've also started reading new books too, simply because it is less of a commiment to get them now.
crystalmace··on I Opted My Kids Out of Standardized Tests
Stories like this make me so glad I'm homeschooled. Even though I'm in Canada, and homeschooling for me just means taking all of my courses online, I am continually thankful that I am not forced to be a part of the public school system. At least I am able to take courses that are designed to teach, and not to prepare one for a test. Indeed, some of the courses I've taken didn't even havtests or final exams, but instead projects that demonstrated the knowledge and skill that you acquired through the course. I find that a much better indication of how I did throughout the course and what areas I need to improve on then any piece of paper that has been 'standardized'.
crystalmace··on To Those Who Want To Drop Out of School
I loved that book! It really managed to give a voice to the frustrations that I felt with my school, and how I was being taught. The on thing that I would like to emphasize though is that the book isn't advocating just dropping out of highschool, it is talking about replacing the school system's stifling attempts at education with teaching yourself what you want to learn. Make no mistake, you won't be getting out of work by dropping out, but you will be actually spending your time and effort on learning something important and helpful instead of wasting it on recieving a 'standardized' education that only exists to make sure that all the grunts have at least a base level of knowledge about 'stuff'. While it is much easier to just sit in school and be spoonfed information, it is ultimately a waste of your time. Your time would be better spent going out and learning about the stuff that interests you.
crystalmace··on Mexican Protest Site Censored by GoDaddy with the U.S. Embassy's Help
Probably because this site wasn't just besmirching them, it was helping organize protests.
crystalmace··on Thousands of People Trying to Play the Same Game of Pokemon
I submitted a link to the twitch yesterdy. One of the comments links to a google doc with current progress recorded. There's also been a program made in C# that analyzes the stream to draw a map of Red's movements. All in all, it is a pretty cool community project right now!

*eyeroll :)
crystalmace··on Thousands play one game of Pokemon simutaneously
However long it takes until one of the payers get frustrated enough to just play it by themself on a emulator on their own computer. :)
crystalmace··on Thousands play one game of Pokemon simutaneously
That's exactly the idea I had when I saw it!
crystalmace··on Thousands play one game of Pokemon simutaneously
I'm quite astonished that they have managed to make it past three gyms already. I suspect that the game will eventually be beaten, but only after a while and after going through several ' cycles', so to speak.

I imagine that each cycle will consist of a mass of people becoming bored with the lack of progress and leave. As more people leave, it becomes easier to control the character, leading to progress being made. Howevere, once progress is made and certain milestones are reached, the interest will again grow and the players will increase again. Eventually, it will become too dfficult to play and interest will wane again; allowing the cycle to repeat.

Thus, I think it will eventually be completed, but not for a while. I'll be following it with interest however!

crystalmace··on Ask HN: Open source an abandoned Mac app for mockups?
I would open source it, if only because it is something that I personally would use and want to improve on. As it sits right now abandoned, it isn't doing any good for anyone, and in my opinion constitues wasted time if not used. My personal philosophy is to open source a project if I abandon it so that the effort that went into it is usefule to someone, if not me. Just my two cents on the issue.
crystalmace··on Group Mind. More than 13,000 People Are Playing Pokémon Red Together
I'm curious, does the setup read and execute every single typed command it recieves, or does it analyze the commands entered within a set time period and simply choose the one that it recieved the most? Which system do you think would work better for such a setup? Is there a system that would work better for such a project?
