I'll take a stab at it. What is the web, really? Gotta be stuff you see and interact with in web browsers right? Sure, you can get to HN, YouTube and Instagram in a browser. But by traffic for example, how much of activity on HN, Instagram and YouTube combined is through a browser? I mean, gotta be pretty low...like 5%? Just a guess, but remember all the app usage and TV usage for those sites is pretty big.

So if 95% of traffic/users/whatever metric are not using a web browser for those activities, is it really the web? It can't be called the web just 'cause they use HTTPS. It's gotta be a 'world wide web' experience, which I think a good proxy for would be using a web browser.

I got no horse in this race, just thinking out loud about it.

cryptoz··on Google CEO says more than a quarter of the company's new code is created by AI
Android mobile development has gotten so …architectured that I would guess most apps have a much higher rate of “boilerplate” than you’d hope for.

Everything is getting forced into a scalable, general purpose way, that most apps have to add a ridiculous amount of boilerplate.

cryptoz··on Steve Ballmer was an underrated CEO
Oh wow really, 2/3 of states let employers pay below minimum wage for tipped employees?
cryptoz··on Steve Ballmer was an underrated CEO
Right. Are waiters in other countries listed above making less than US federal minimum wage?
cryptoz··on Steve Ballmer was an underrated CEO
Got a citation for that? Lots of waiters in the US make $2/hour or something before tips (can anyone correct me here?) where the expectation is that tips will bring them up to $7-8/hour, more in line with other minimum wage jobs.
cryptoz··on Steve Ballmer was an underrated CEO
Nope! We sure don’t! Not on purpose any way. But the businesses sure want us to.

This mostly happens at smaller stores and not big chains.

cryptoz··on Steve Ballmer was an underrated CEO
I’m in lower Queen Anne. Every corner store that also sells coffee/sandwiches does this. Maybe 1-5% of customers are buying a sandwich, but 100% are prompted to tip with an 18% default.
cryptoz··on Steve Ballmer was an underrated CEO
If that is your takeaway from this story, hooooo boy you must be in a rage every day. Places all over Seattle default their machines to tip 18% when you buy a single roll of toilet paper and nothing else. (Edit: you could also pick up a few bottles of expensive wine they sell; maybe you’re in a rush and don’t expect a tip screen ; ooooops you tipped $40 for nothing!)

There’s a place that does this less than a block from me right now. Actually probably 2-3 places if you extend a block further.

I don’t have a PS5 but my Xbox (my first one ever) is an absolute nightmare to play, even if I have the physical media. Still demands an internet connection. Still demands updates before I play. Typically I would expect to wait 2+ hours before I’m allowed to play a game I have on physical media. Often the estimated time is so long I just give up and don’t play. I let it update and then forget about it. Come back a week later and it says my system is out of date and needs an update before I play.

Not the same experience at all compared to N64.

Prompting is a skill you can develop with practice and get better at. Also, some tasks just aren’t going to work well for various reasons.

Yes, LLMs can actually help with coding. But it’s not magic. There are limits. And you get better with practice.

cryptoz··on A near impossible literacy test Louisiana used to suppress the black vote
That is wrong and you have failed the test. If you include the . you have clearly misunderstood the question. It did not indicate to draw a line around the number or letter and dot. Since you included the dot we will fail you. We are aware the question did not indicate the dot or not and it doesn’t matter. You failed, bye!

Yeah I've tried archive.org but the page just loads blank: https://web.archive.org/web/20241010022037/https://www.fsis....

Sadly I missed it last week when it was released :(

The PDF link to show you the products that may make you ill with listeria is corrupted: https://www.fsis.usda.gov/sites/default/files/food_label_pdf...

Any ideas how to read the PDF? I can't figure it out, repair features in Acrobat aren't working, etc. I already emailed but wondering if any of you have ideas

Humans also engage in quadrupedal locomotion, often at any speed and sometimes up stairs too.

Also, I see both of my dogs standing on 2 legs every day, often walking short distances like that. According to wikipedia this only happens when they are trained to do it (?!) but we never trained them and they've been doing it since a few months old. Maybe I should update https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipedalism to indicate training may not be required for temporary bipedal behavior in some dogs.

I’ve put this in my “other ideas” section in YC applications for a couple rounds now. No luck yet.

Would love to send 1,000 probes to 550AU+ out in order to observe 1,000+ ‘nearby’ exoplanets, hopefully find life, make contact, start trade…haha. Or otherwise defend the solar system from invaders that are perhaps already on the way!

Maybe YC rejects me specifically because I put that there…hm.

cryptoz··on MacOS sometimes leaks traffic after system updates
But how? - surely they don't store the passwords in plain text locally? Does the OS have a function to log in a user while bypassing their credentials? I would have assumed that it is impossible for the OS to preloadapps() when it doesn't have access to the user's apps in the first place.

But apparently it does! shrug

So why tell the user that they need to log in first? If they are the only user account on the system and the OS can access the user's files and apps without logging in, why have the user event set a password in the first place? It seems like a fake login, a false sense of security. And a massive security issue. If the user can just open the lid and that means that code is now running under their own account but they have not authorized a log in, that's just dangerous.

cryptoz··on Traveling with Apple Vision Pro
The last time I remember flying with a tablet, it was so suspicious that airport security hauled me into a private room and interrogated me about it. They questioned why I didn't take it out of my bag for the scanner (since it was a 'laptop'). They asked what it was. They made me turn it on and use it. They were extremely rude and kept me holed up for a long time while investigating it.

So I don't fly with a tablet any more haha! Although, I get that time has passed and I would no longer be accosted so much, I assume. Must be pretty common now. My story takes place in ~2011 with the Motorola Xoom tablet. I guess they had never seen a tablet before.

I was also working hard on a plane one time, writing code to access barometer data on mobile devices to build a distributed weather sensor network that could be activated in software. The flight attendant came by and told me, "okay, time to put your toys away sweetie" referring to my tablet and phone. Oooooooooh my god.

OP never said they liked spaceflight. They also didn't say anything about addressing human needs. They just said "hard tech golden age". So I think you are looking for a fight that isn't there.

But anyway; let's take it at the best case curiosity. I do like spaceflight. Is it a problem to you what people like? Does everything you like specifically address human needs? I find this confusing.

Regardless, all life on Earth is going to die. I see it as a "major human need" to avoid death of our civilization and all other life we know of in the whole universe, if it becomes possible. And it does seem more possible now - because of the advances SpaceX has made with hard rocket tech in the last few years, specifically.

cryptoz··on MacOS sometimes leaks traffic after system updates
How is this possible? I wouldn’t have thought that it could open your applications without you logging in? How does it know who you are? How does it know which applications to open? If you’re not logged in yet, is is just logging in for you automatically but not showing you?

Seems like a huge security bug. This isn’t being exploited? Wild stuff.

Reminds me of when you could hear a FaceTime call coming through but if you chose not to answer it, no worries! Your iPhone will turn on your camera anyway! And send your video to the calling party!

cryptoz··on Show HN: HTML for People
Aha! So some photos are actually 'files', but some are not! The confusion continues! I get why Apple has it this way - current iPhones are very very popular and selling them with the current UX makes Apple a lot of money.

But it's pretty clear that the Files app is not meant - in any way - to help users understand computers, what files are, etc. It is obtuse and confusing as soon as the user wants to leave the iOS ecosystem (even to go use a Mac).

cryptoz··on Show HN: HTML for People
Isn't doctype still required by the spec in HTML5 in order to be "proper"? Perhaps I'm mistaken but I thought I remembered that it's technically 'required'.
cryptoz··on Show HN: HTML for People
> the iOS Files app has allowed access to local files since 2019

Huh. I just opened my Files app on my iPhone 12 and went to On My iPhone (which was 2-3 more taps once arriving in the app). I don't see many of my files though, just a few. Some PDFs and a Spotify folder. But I don't see my pictures there? Or are pictures no longer stored as 'files'? Or do you mean that the app has allowed access only to some local user files? It's not all local files. And it's not all non-system local files. And it's not all user files. In fact it is missing > 99% of my user-space files (specifically ones created with default-OS applications on device, by the user).

And if I make a Note in the Notes app, will it show up as a file in the Files app? Probably not, I would guess. Because the note probably isn't really a file anyway. So pictures aren't files, and notes aren't files. What would a file be then? Are files only PDFs? That's the only thing that shows up for me. I guess PDFs are the only things that are files then!

Super confusing experience. I'm a mobile app developer by the way - on Android. Android sucks at this too of course. But the iOS Files app is much too limited to enable users to 'get' the concept of a file.
