crypto-jeronimo··on Why Crystal is the most promising programming language of 2018
Could you elaborate about the value of Elixir, please? It's been on my radar for quite a while now.

crypto-jeronimo··on Ask HN: Next programming language to learn: Nim vs. D?
> Learning a very different language is fun and useful.

Yes, that's one of my main motivations. I'm comfortable enough with Python, Java (comfortable doesn't mean I enjoy this one) and C.

> Do you have projects in mind?

Yes, both are solely for the purpose of enrichment of my current set of skills and knowledge: - Source control system that is a "lite" version of git. - A bit torrent client.

crypto-jeronimo··on Ask HN: Next programming language to learn: Nim vs. D?
I'm looking for a well-rounded language, which is versatile in the same direction as, e.g., Python is. Ideally, it would also enable expanding one's own set of programming skills and knowledge/practice of interesting paradigms (i.e., a mind-shift of sorts).

Nice to have's: - a rich library ecosystem (like Python and Go, for instance) - as close to C as possible, in terms of speed

crypto-jeronimo··on Increasing Bitcoin-Privacy Using the Lightning Network
Along with increased centralization?

I can see some important (in "PageRank" sense) hubs emerging, which could give rise to problems that are analogous to those in the current proof-of-work setting, and the associated mining pool centralization.

crypto-jeronimo··on Ask HN: Which is the most customizable/programmable smart watch?
Thanks!

So far, I've found this, but it doesn't seem to be programmable, in a conventional way:

I'll have a look at the Jolla prototype, and try to contact their engineering team, if it turns out to be relevant enough.

crypto-jeronimo··on Ask HN: Is self-publishing a programming book a viable option nowadays?
Yeah, that's the idea basically.

And the question had to do with whether having such kind of a "platform" would benefit more from having the book component published by professionals, or self-published.

crypto-jeronimo··on Ask HN: Is self-publishing a programming book a viable option nowadays?
I'd say, the major concern has been the limited control in terms of the kind of deal I'd be left with.

Could you, please, provide some examples of those small publishers you got in mind (in case you actually did)?

> They'll save you a lot of pain -- don't underestimate the work of printing, marketing, and distribution.

That's a great point! I completely agree.

crypto-jeronimo··on Ask HN: Is self-publishing a programming book a viable option nowadays?
Yes, exactly! This has been exactly one of my major concerns, with respect to the "conventional" option of working with a publisher.
crypto-jeronimo··on Dealership Makes Woman Sitting Right in Front of Them Confirm She's Not a Robot
Yes, but that's literally impossible.

Unless, they: (i) can predict the future; (ii) invent a time machine, which may a superset of (i), subject to the associated limitations of the "device"; (iii) break Google's algorithm in a way that they could know in advance which customer would be served which (Re)CAPTCHA at exactly which point in time.

The latest point would be extremely challenging even if they were printing a (Re)CAPTCHA in real time, during the process of filling the physical form.

> the principle that "every action on the web form is matched by the customer's ink marks on paper"

I think some of this would also be impossible, because the web form does not exist in isolation and is part of a particular browser environment: - browser version - installed plug-ins - associated plug-in settings - auto-fill suggestions

Then, one goes down the rabbit hole of other un-matchable features such as, peculiarities of the underlying OS. For instance, in the context of Windows 10, a user may get an additional dose of distraction due to receiving utterly unscientific claims regarding battery-life increase under re-branded versions (but, nevertheless, only useful for downloading other browsers, such as Firefox or Chrome) of Internet Explorer.

All of this begins to sound a bit like a free version of Amazon's Mechanical Turk platform. Further versions of such paper forms may actually be used for outsourcing Turing Test questions to wetware, so that we could read further waves of ridiculous articles copy-and-pasting misunderstandings regarding the great achievements of the next "AI" which has "passed" the test.

Next thing you know, they show you a paper photo and ask you to identify cars, bridges and whatnot in it ...
crypto-jeronimo··on Ask HN: What are the pros and cons of hiring a ghostwriter for a sci-fi novel?
Thanks - these are great insights!

Would you mind sharing some websites - based on your own experience or otherwise - where one could find "legitimate" (in quotes because it's, somehow, definition-specific) ghostwriters?

And, perhaps, if you wouldn't mind giving a reference to a sample list of requirement documents (provided by the person who's requesting the work) and, possibly, guidelines for preparing those (e.g., in terms of format etc.)?
