crummy··on NY school phone ban has made lunch loud again
assuming they were able to acquire customers and dominate the world with that business model, would that have prevented them from doing algorithmic feeds and promoting clickbait and poisoning politics and the rest?

sure, people would have been able to cancel their monthly facebook subscriptions if they didn't like that stuff. but we can effectively do that now just by not using it.

crummy··on Ask HN: How do you managing staging database content?
If you go with (2), and you add a DB column in a PR, I suppose you include a script to update staging with the new content at the same time?
crummy··on Novo Nordisk's Canadian Mistake
More like letting the domain expire, and someone else snapping it up before you can renew.

crummy··on Why did containers happen?
> Docker also made Go credible as a programming language,

Can someone explain why Docker was beneficial for Go?

crummy··on DDoS Botnet Aisuru Blankets US ISPs in Record DDoS
I guess if they go after bigger targets they draw unwanted attention? Seemed odd to me too.
crummy··on The React Foundation
I know Vercel has their fingers in a bunch of pies, but is there any significant vendor locking? I worked at a place where we just put nextJS in a docker container and hosted it ourselves, but maybe we would have got more on Vercel?
crummy··on California passes law to ban ultra-processed foods from school lunches
thanks for the tip. The text is not on that page, but here's a link to it if anyone else is curious:

crummy··on A competitor crippled a $23.5M bootcamp by becoming a Reddit moderator
> I compared the statement 'do this because it changed my life and the life of many others' to the type of language used in cult documentaries on HBO

why did you make that comparison?

crummy··on BYD builds fastest car
what is "boost"? my car does not have that
crummy··on Benefits of choosing email over messaging
At my current job (1000+ employee tech company), I pretty much never receive emails from humans. Plenty of automated notifications and the odd marketing mail, but everything else is Slack and Zoom.

I think it's way better. Email has so many limitations, especially as soon as you're in a group discussion.

crummy··on Drunk CSS
yeah but reading this is difficult and annoying, which reminds me of squinting at my blurry phone trying to read it while drunk
crummy··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
In New Zealand the brain drain discussion has been going on for decades. We are remote, have a limited economy, wages are low. As a result, many smart kids graduate from university, go travel overseas (particularly Australia and the UK), find jobs with better wages, and never come home. It's referred to in the media as the brain drain.
crummy··on U.S. investors, Trump close in on TikTok deal with China
Isn't this as bipartisan as it gets? Trump wanted China to divest from Tiktok. Congress passed the bill. Biden signed it. The Supreme Court agreed that, yes, this is legal.

Sure, people didn't vote for Larry Ellison to take control. But something like this is what we wanted, right?

crummy··on When the job search becomes impossible
Presumably the end of such a winter would involve the tech sector growing.

According to wikipedia[0] there doesn't seem to be any significant uptick in H1Bs. Is that what you were referring to by "immigrants coming over in hopes of getting a white-collar job"?

crummy··on Top UN legal investigators conclude Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza
If you live in a safe blue/safe red state, then there's no harm in voting third party.
crummy··on AI is different
> However, if AI avoids plateauing long enough to become significantly more useful and independent of humans, this revolution is going to be very unlike the past ones. Yet the economic markets are reacting as if they were governed by stochastic parrots.

Aren't the markets massively puffed up by AI companies at the moment?

edit: for example, the S&P500's performance with and without the top 10 (which is almost totally tech companies) looks very different: https://i.imgur.com/IurjaaR.jpeg

crummy··on US Trade Court finds Trump tariffs illegal
I remember Obama struggling pretty hard to get Obamacare through congress (and it ended up fairly watered down).
crummy··on Claude 4
There might be a lot of prior work out there to train on though.

There's some software out there that's supposed to help with this kind of thing for Java upgrades already: https://github.blog/changelog/2025-05-19-github-copilot-app-...

crummy··on Hyper Typing
How do you get JIT optimizations from TypeScript types? Don't the types get stripped before you run it?
crummy··on Bus stops here: Shanghai lets riders design their own routes

crummy··on Plain Vanilla Web
> please then explain to me why Steam is so successful at deploying large games on multiple platforms?

if you look into the support forums on steam for any random game you'll find lots of complaints about stability and crashes, many of which are likely to be esoteric system-specific problems.

crummy··on Static as a Server
If you load external content on build (e.g. external blog pages, prices from an external store, etc), then you'll need some way to template that into your HTML. I'm not a huge React fan but I do like JSX compared to other templating languages.
crummy··on I decided to pay off a school’s lunch debt
A political party in New Zealand just considered rolling back school lunches to only those in need, rather than every kid at a lower decile school. This article is a great response to why that is a bad idea.
crummy··on Third party cookies must be removed
I think you're right. I imagine if third party cookies were ever banned, we'd quickly see googleads.whatever.com become a common sight.

crummy··on NSF director to resign amid grant terminations, job cuts, and controversy
Historically, 'this decision is so outrageous that three important people have resigned' has been a powerful brake on outrageous decisions.

That has stopped being the case recently, for whatever reason.

crummy··on Eight or more drinks per week linked to brain lesions
