crooked-v··on Political bias in AI: Where the AI models stand
The problem is the "without too much cognitive dissonance" part. Lots of voters have completely dissonant views that they've never consciously considered in any way. Just by posting on HN, the people here are probably in the top 5% of conscious political awareness in the US.
crooked-v··on Political bias in AI: Where the AI models stand
The lines seem to be pointing to the "nearest" politician comparison point, not the data point for the LLM.

Except for Claude, for some reason?

You can see the "area" for the LLM by hovering it over it, they all line up with the icons except for Claude. For example: https://i.imgur.com/KF60LuW.png You can see the Grok icon is at the center of the circle.

crooked-v··on The deadly rise of giant trucks and SUVs
Removing the 'light truck' hole in CAFE standards would be a good start.
crooked-v··on The deadly rise of giant trucks and SUVs
Here in San Francisco, there a huge number of "e-bikes" that are designed, built, and sold as de facto illegal motorcycles, with only the paper-thin wink-nudge of a speed limiter that can be easily removed by the user, sometimes with online listings literally advertising the top speed without the limiter up front.

The city's treatment of traffic danger is comically bad, but these "e-bikes" aren't kids gallivanting around, they are traffic danger - usually by way of gig workers without insurance ignoring all traffic laws because they're riding "e-bikes" (with the speed limiter pulled out).

crooked-v··on The deadly rise of giant trucks and SUVs
The basic problem that causes laws like these to be passed is companies selling technically-legal "e-bikes" that are, in practice, electric mopeds you can remove the speed limiter and useless-but-technically-functional pedals from with fifteen minutes of work, converting them into illegal motorcycles.
crooked-v··on Job application asked for my SAT scores
"In cursive" is just filtering for people old enough to have been taught cursive.
crooked-v··on Steam Machine launches today
Note that the "just" is overlooking that it's more locked down than a typical Linux box, in that the OS filesystem is read-only and all app installs live in userland (though you can turn off the read-only behavior). For what it's worth I'm very much a fan of it as a default for a mass-market machine, but you'll run into weird gotchas if you want to do "programmer stuff" with it.
crooked-v··on A record 242 US cities now have starter homes that cost $1M
Here in San Francisco, you just have to look on Nextdoor for two minutes to see droves of people coming up with absurd complaints about any and every case of new housing construction, up to and including literally photoshopping bad faith concept images of buildings to try and make projects look worse.

Housing prices only come up when people try to engage in bad faith gymnastics about how actually they only paid 200K for their two million dollar house so they're totally just ordinary middle class people with middle class concerns.

crooked-v··on A record 242 US cities now have starter homes that cost $1M
"People don't want houses in random small towns with few local jobs, so the housing shortage isn't real" continues to be a bullshit claim every time it comes up.
crooked-v··on A record 242 US cities now have starter homes that cost $1M
Talking about "gambling" is entirely missing that there is a genuine and massive housing shortage in literally every major US metro area. https://www.fanniemae.com/research-and-insights/perspectives...

There is no level of banning housing speculation that will ever make prices go down. Housing speculation is only profitable because there aren't enough homes in the first place.

crooked-v··on Notes from tired Egyptian whose job is explaining that humans built the pyramids
The Burj Khalifa is exactly the kind of vanity megaproject you're talking about.
crooked-v··on Notes from tired Egyptian whose job is explaining that humans built the pyramids
The Luxor Las Vegas was built in 1993. It even had a replica tomb for a while.
crooked-v··on Notes from tired Egyptian whose job is explaining that humans built the pyramids
That one is an interesting scifi premise, but deeply unpersuasive when it comes to actual humans.
crooked-v··on Seventeen Camels and Where They Can Take You
The part you're missing is that the solution includes the solver gifting a camel to make 18, then taxing back the leftover camel at the end.

Of course, that's still got the same kind of 'but that's not in the rules' issue, but I think the bigger element is that it's not really meant as a "puzzle", but more showing off the unintuitive nature of the results.

crooked-v··on Write for One Person
People are "getting more computer illiterate" because younger people were never taught computer literacy in the first place. We're past the point where children just automatically learn that by using computers, because computers are too reliable to require acquisition of those skills.

Compare to cars. Once upon a time, every car owner had to know how to maintain a car. Nowadays, you can get along perfectly fine having no idea what's going on under the hood.

crooked-v··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
Run it in a VM. Note that just a container probably won't be enough (https://stateofsurveillance.org/articles/ai/claude-opus-4-5-...).
crooked-v··on Tailwind and slop apps
You absolutely have to know how CSS layout works to do anything even marginally complicated with Tailwind. It's not a replacement for building flexbox layouts or dealing with Z-indexes or knowing how to compose elements for different viewport sizes. All it's actually separating you from is (most of) the "Cascading" part and having your styles separate from you elements.
crooked-v··on Tailwind and slop apps
I'm a fan of vaporwave and dithering, myself.
crooked-v··on Tailwind and slop apps
Writing CSS from scratch sucks. I'm glad we've left those days far behind.
crooked-v··on Tailwind and slop apps
Tailwind is just the latest iteration of people trying "real" CSS, discovering that it still sucks, and coming up with something with better abstractions than the last iteration of attempts to replace CSS.

Everything else is just people using a default configuration instead of building their own.

crooked-v··on Reading for pleasure is sharply down among schoolkids, report shows
So how much of this is a consequence of small children being taught to guess instead of to actually read? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_cueing
crooked-v··on Waymo Premier
It's $30/month for these extras. You're still paying per trip, just with a de facto 10% off.
crooked-v··on Waymo Premier
"Mind boggling"? I don't see that at all. You still have to pay for each trip, this is a separate cost on top.
crooked-v··on A €0.01 bank transfer could compromise a banking AI agent
I doubt it's possible, regardless of specific architecture, because if you want an AI that can do general purpose tasks like "look at my calendar and find a restaurant for the lunch meeting that the other people also like, but make sure nobody has to travel more than 20 minutes to get there, and it can't be too cold inside", then it has to ingest and understand a bunch of data to do that. The whole point is that the decision-making process is reading everything. The only "fix" is to make an AI smart enough that it can understand context for each item, which is a tall order.
crooked-v··on It's death
Reminds me of the cut number "The Hole" from the Beetlejuice stage musical: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYa31LqxKc8
crooked-v··on Apple WWDC 2026
Apple doesn't trust other providers. See, for example, the ongoing attempts by Facebook & co to exfiltrate as much data as possible. A theoretical Facebook alternative here to super-Siri would have a pipe to slurp up the entire phone's data.

This kind of thing overlaps with the anti-competitive practices driven by Apple's MBAs (like the whole thing with Epic), but it's a genuine concern and one their engineering people think about a lot.

crooked-v··on Flock license plate reader wrongly linked a San Diego man to a violent crime
Of course I can.
crooked-v··on Flock license plate reader wrongly linked a San Diego man to a violent crime
> Trying to say it was 5 miles away 23 seconds after an unknown reference is being intentionally obtuse.

The article specifically says:

> just 23 seconds after San Police Officers in Golden Hill tried stopping the suspected carjacker

> Their tort claim notes that the path the men took to the cigar lounge passed by several other Flock cameras, which could have corroborated their story, as well as the location data on their cell phones.

Your argument is that, what, this guy you argue has no money also hacked the phone company to fake their records while driving at 100 mph through San Diego under an invisibility cloak so no other cameras or people saw anything?

crooked-v··on Universal Memory Protocol – a shared format for agent memory
> Injection-resistant by mandate

> Memory is attacker-controllable input. The spec requires a verify, filter, frame rehydration pipeline. Never string-interpolated into the prompt.

Uhhh... so who wants to tell them how LLMs work?

crooked-v··on Bullets don't shoot people. So why do cars 'kill' cyclists?
It's the same kind of weasel journalism as "officer-involved shootings".
