cromulent··on We're the Researchers who looked into the privacy of 25 of the top car brands
I think the UK is perhaps the home of such things. I for one would love to build a Caterham one day.
cromulent··on New world record with an electric racing car: From 0 to 100 in 0.956 seconds
Yeah it was unforgettable. Also the Williams FW08B, but that was banned before racing.

cromulent··on Global trends in incidence, death, burden and risk factors of early-onset cancer
Normally “toxin” refers to a natural poison produced by an animal or plant.
cromulent··on Oscilloscope watch ships after 10 years on Kickstarter
Creators have obligations. This is true whether they are legally enforceable or not.
cromulent··on Oscilloscope watch ships after 10 years on Kickstarter
I agree that funders should not expect a reward for their pledge.

However, it is simply not true that it is "obligation-free". This is inaccurate.

Kickstarter say:

> When a project is successfully funded, the creator must complete the project and fulfill each reward. Once a creator has done so, they’ve satisfied their obligation to their backers.

> The creator is solely responsible for fulfilling the promises made in their project. If they’re unable to satisfy the terms of this agreement, they may be subject to legal action by backers.

cromulent··on How to get ChatGPT to stop apologizing?
Absolutely. Reminded me of Chris Pratt's famous P&R flu scene ad lib "Leslie, I typed your symptoms into the thing up here and it says you could have network connectivity problems".
cromulent··on Trying to become a better developer by learning more about aviation
Tester at work calls them “defects”. Mostly they are “test findings” resulting from hallucinated specifications that don’t exist except in his mind, or misunderstandings from him not reading the documentation. Or data problems. It’s annoying having them called “bugs” let alone “defects”.
cromulent··on Twitter unveils X logo to replace blue bird
Reminds me of Yahoo! circa 2013, with the CEO deciding that of all the problems, the logo was the one to fix. Competition held, CEO's design won.
cromulent··on Ask HN: Are people in tech inside an AI echo chamber?
Sure, but is there any reason this cannot happen without NFTs?

I have bought assigned seat tickets online direct from venues without TM nor NFTs, worked fine.

I have also bought tickets to exhibitions (no seats nor assigned time) direct from venues online without TM nor NFTs, worked fine.

Seems that the only problem is TM and you won't make them go way with NFTs.

cromulent··on Apple co-founder sells Carmel Valley ranch, will become nature preserve
The Helsinki Foundation does this - in the constitution it states that the land use cannot be changed without permission from all donors, effectively giving each donor a veto right (and donations can be 1$).

cromulent··on Humanity's earliest recorded kiss occurred in Mesopotamia 4,500 years ago
Dr Karl (aussie science guy) got all the well-wishers to put their unsanitized finger into his eldest son's mouth on his birth day. Sample size 1, worked OK.

cromulent··on Memory Allocation
Nice article, but highly editorialized title, not sure what is intuitive about it.
cromulent··on Ozempic drug supresses desire to smoke, drink and more?
Some people will tell you though that they can eat anything and not put on weight - this is simply allowing others to do the same, right.

A vomitorium is simply the large exit pathway in stadia for rapid egress of many people. The idea that ancient Romans had facilities dedicated to vomiting has been debunked.

cromulent··on Htmx Is the Future
I think this is the point of the client side check though - if the user makes a typo (e.g. gamil.com) then the client side validation can prompt them to check, before the server sends the validation email and annoys the owner of the typoed address.

cromulent··on Methane may not warm the Earth quite as much as previously thought
> literally trillions of dollars worth of economic activity, per year, now and supposedly for the next 50 or 100 years, across the whole of Western civilization

I'm not sure what sort of model you used to arrive at this vague estimate, but:

Even if you assume AGW science is completely wrong and the effect is zero, humans have to move from fossil fuels to renewables/nuclear in that timeframe anyway, because we have 47 years of oil left. Whether it's 20 years or 80 years, still needs to happen.

cromulent··on Why do ships use “port” and “starboard” instead of “left” and “right?”
For those who think left/right is enough: When you are racing sailboats, a boat on your “left” (or “right”) can have “right” of way because the wind is hitting their main sail from the “right” and yours from the “left”.

They will yell “starboard!” at you, rather than “left” or “right”. Easier that way.

cromulent··on Why do ships use “port” and “starboard” instead of “left” and “right?”
Cable/chain ferries would not be able to turn around of course, the drivers would have to deal with it.
cromulent··on UK airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with new scanners
There's a photo of the new 3d scanners here (they remind me of a jet engine).

cromulent··on UK airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with new scanners
Yeah, they've had them for a year or so at Helsinki. Super fast and convenient. They have to re-educate everyone to not take your laptop out to keep things moving quickly.

JFK has one of the new machines, but I haven't seen them use it yet.

cromulent··on Thinking hard makes the brain tired
Surely if being tired was not about your brain, then sleeping would simply involve lying down, not being unconscious :)
cromulent··on What broke Sweden? Real estate bust exposes big divide
Ten years ago the average mortgage length in Sweden was 140 years.

It's been limited to 105 years now, and the length has reduced. It's hard to imagine a market like that can be anything but dysfunctional.

cromulent··on New insights into why aspirin works so well
"The dose makes the poison", as Paracelsus said. Everything (including water and oxygen) is toxic at the wrong levels.
