croemer··on Disruption with Some GitHub Services
Possibly vitess from the latest update:

croemer··on Over 5,200 Ebola cases recorded in Congo
There's a Bayesian forecast from some folks at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine that's useful to see if the outbreak has reached peak size: https://epiforecasts.io/BVDOutbreakSize/stable/analysis#Summ...

The last update finally had a growth rate confidence interval straggling 0, meaning the peak seems to be within reach: "The latest growth rate is estimated to be 30% -0.005–0.008"

There's a nice figure showing Rt over time: https://epiforecasts.io/BVDOutbreakSize/stable/analysis#Repr...

Yes here in FAQs:

Are paywalls ok?

It's ok to post stories from sites with paywalls that have workarounds.

In comments, it's ok to ask how to read an article and to help other users do so. But please don't post complaints about paywalls. Those are off topic. More here

Per HN Guideline "Please submit the original source. If a post reports on something found on another site, submit the latter.", this should be pointed at the original source: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10....

Also worth noting: Frontiers in Psychology is a low-impact journal.

croemer··on Buy Your Friends Batteries
Why do you need to segregate them? Can't you switch the rest off? Or is the problem that otherwise you'd supply neighbors as well?
croemer··on AI-Generated GitHub Copilot “Autofix” Allowed Compromise of Snowflake's Jira
Yes, it's misattributed, a human introduced it: https://github.com/snowflakedb/snowflake-connector-net/pull/...
croemer··on AI-Generated GitHub Copilot “Autofix” Allowed Compromise of Snowflake's Jira
You're correct. The issue was introduced in this commit by a human not by copilot: https://github.com/snowflakedb/snowflake-connector-net/pull/...

However, GitHub Advanced Security, a bot, flagged something but not the real issue. So maybe that bot contributed a false sense of security.

croemer··on Anthropic's 'watermark' text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
Opus 5 does not have the watermark yet. Only models released from now on.
croemer··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
That's a good one. Problem is that SynthID uses only roughly the last 4 tokens, so any literal test 4 tokens or longer that is generated has the watermark. If you fix typos, insert punctuation, rename variables then yes this should be undetectable if produced from a diff.
croemer··on Tracking down a Zsh history data loss bug
The eval bit in the end is interesting. Opus 5 and Sol 5.6 solved it reliably but Opus used 10x more tokens and room 10x as long!

croemer··on Qwen 3.8 27B
Depends on where you sit on the binomial curve. At p=0.04 for n=250 4% points would not be within margin of error.
croemer··on Qwen 3.8 27B
How much does it score though? 0% would be 4% less if Opus was at 4%. Unless you mean relative fraction not percentage points - but people usually mean percentage points in such situations.
croemer··on For the love of god stop using CPU limits in Kubernetes
Requests are guaranteed no matter what.

> If I have 16 pods with 1cpu and 1 pod with 16cpu, does the Linux scheduler make sure to give the 16cpu pod more time?

Yes if there's CPU pressure the 16cpu will get 16x more than 1cpu.

croemer··on Pixel Watch 5
No, it's not a glucose sensor. Extrapolating from the Google research published in Nature a few months ago on how they estimate insulin sensitivity using wearables (and not just BMI, age, etc): https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-026-10179-2

Insulin sensitivity correlates with obesity, activity, sleep, etc. so it's not impossible that a wearable can give some degree of prediction. I guess it's mostly good motivation to support habits that increase sensitivity (physical activity, low stress).

croemer··on An internal OpenAI Astra model solved 10 major open math and CS problems
Right now it makes your account completely useless if you work on something completely harmless related to viruses. Blocks, downgrades, throttling of answers "to check for safety".

You need to be at a select few institutions to avoid these safety features, which I'm not. University needs to sign some stuff but I that's outside my control.

Not sure why it matters whether weights are software or not.

One can equally argue that firmware is just settings for the CPU.

If weights aren't copyrightable then doesn't this argue against the idea of them being able to have the quality of open-sourceness? Meanwhile the training code could be copyrightable.

croemer··on Running Kimi K3 on MI355X at Better Performance per Dollar Than B300
Some of us might be rich, or get funding, or in the future it could be useful when training is cheaper.

Open source has benefits even if you can run yourself. You can read the code for understanding/insights. Other labs could replicate/build on it.
