crisopolis··on Final – A credit card built for the 21st century
Having to pay a annual fee, a credit check and get an invite to use it? Might as well just use my AMEX or my debit card. My bank is more crazy over transactions than anything.

Walk into a Wal-Mart, as soon as I put the card in my phone rings (it's my bank) and card is denied.

AMEX likes to text and email me of things needing my confirmation.

If all else Privacy.com does the job just fine of generating new cards, burners, and etc.

I like privacy.com ... Chrome add-in and you can generate card numbers at anytime for online-only stuff. I've put all my subscriptions (i.e. Netflix, Hulu, etc.) through privacy.com.

I applied/heard about Final long, long time ago and they've done nothing since. So yeah...

crisopolis··on Ruby on Rails Tutorial
Glad everyone is recommending this but I also hope they recommend learning Ruby first before Rails.

Zeit (now) doesn't have database related stuff... then again why have your database mismanaged by a non-DBA PaaS?

crisopolis··on Building Serverless Apps with Webtask.io
Thing I find odd with Auth0's Webtask.io is... -30 days webtask lifetime- for the free to play plan.

I've had a webtask running since February when I made it to interview for Auth0 (ironic). It's still running, firing off events and contactable via HTTP. So when exactly does it get turned off since it's obviously past its lifetime?

I still prefer not to trust a blackbox such as Webtask to run my code. Luckily this webtask I'm referencing does nothing more than fire off push notifications. However, I'm waiting for the code that relies on it to fail when Auth0 does end its life.

crisopolis··on Show HN: View Top 10 posts on HN, Reddit, Medium every day, week and month
GitHub part is so flawed... because FreeCodeCamp inflate their popularity by requiring during onboarding for the user to star their repository yet keeping them at the top. It's like if I told everyone to vote up my Hacker News posts... and gave them the link to do it and GitHub has no remedy for that inflation.

crisopolis··on Ask HN: What are you currently working on? [April 2016 version]
I'm working on a dispatching platform written in Vue.js and Elixir. Think... cable tech, power tech, disaster worker... being able to communicate via mobile that they are on scene, enroute and etc. with there dispatch center.

https://alpha.highwayapp.co - Alpha for... you know alpha.

crisopolis··on GitHub project of the week: Oracle JET
Misleading headline this project is nowhere close to project of the week and it's not even trending. Even if it was I wouldn't touch Oracle crapware with a ten foot pole.
crisopolis··on DNS Outage at DigitalOcean
That's crazy... I think by default DO droplets use Google DNS for resolving.
crisopolis··on DNS Outage at DigitalOcean
heh yeah, I just laugh at all the tweets saying their losing $billions of dollars every minute their site/app is unavailable. All I can think is... if you're the next Amazon.com I'm pretty sure you'd have some type of disaster plan in place should something like this happen.
crisopolis··on DNS Outage at DigitalOcean
The resolution is, for any app/startup/business everything is a risk and if you didn't include the edge-case of "What happens if my primary DNS nameserver goes down for my domain?" into account. Is all you can do is blame DO?

If your app goes down do you have failover for that? Or do you blame your devops team?

crisopolis··on DNS Outage at DigitalOcean
I also hope the users of your site understand that shit happens. Also as another user said... if DNS is so critical for you then why don't you have proper failover in place?
crisopolis··on DNS Outage at DigitalOcean
So what you're saying is that instead of running their own Status Page on their own infrastructure that's reachable. They should outsource it to statuspage.io and pay another company to do it?
crisopolis··on DNS Outage at DigitalOcean
I've never experienced an outage of any kind with DO, so also first time. I also host all my droplets in the NYC regions.
crisopolis··on DNS Outage at DigitalOcean
I've been reading all the comments on Twitter also... like "err mai gawd I'm switching to AWS because of this" and your failure to not have a secondary DNS provider, but I highly doubt you'd switch.

Then another... "Today's @digitalocean DNS #outage is a reminder to not trust your entire business to one provider. Spread the love around!"

If your company is e-commerce and makes money by being 99.99% available. It's your own fault for no fail-over.

another... ".@digitalocean that's two hours without DNS now...my company's websites could be losing thousands of £ in e-commerce! Please, an update!"
