crinkly··on I should have loved electrical engineering
These days C is enough pain :)
crinkly··on I should have loved electrical engineering
I disagree with this entirely as I rather like a desk job and hammers make my hands hurt after a bit :)

If you want to get paid in software don't do something utterly commoditised and popular or you're just a fungible meat flavoured work unit. Get really damn good at something with some longevity in a stable niche.

crinkly··on I should have loved electrical engineering
If you want to learn how to solve problems with hammers, engineering is what you want to do. If you want to know how the hammer works, do mathematics or physics. If you want to get paid, do software.

This is why I did an EE degree, didn't get paid much, went into software and used that to pay for a mathematics degree.

crinkly··on For all that's holy, can you just leverage the web, please?
Rubbish. The sticker is still on my 14 year old washing machine.

Hell I've got a 55 year old piece of electronic equipment here with the serial number sticker still on it.

crinkly··on For all that's holy, can you just leverage the web, please?
This stuff really annoys me but the problem is really well solved elsewhere.

When you buy an Apple product it has a number on it Axxxx and a serial number somewhere. That's all you need to identify your product to anyone. That includes service manuals and spare parts.

And as far as warranty registration goes, they register it at the point of sale/activation as the warranty starting. Job done. No humans / lookups / anything required. It just happens.

crinkly··on For all that's holy, can you just leverage the web, please?
Yep.

When the only tool you know is the hammer you're going to hit inappropriate things with it.

crinkly··on MIT Study Finds AI Use Reprograms the Brain, Leading to Cognitive Decline
Good to hear. I will add that not everyone who writes a paper expects anyone to read a paper with that level of diligence and it can lead to some interesting outcomes for the paper authors over time.

Keep up the good work is all I can say!

crinkly··on With AI Boom, Dell's Datacenter Biz Is Finally Bigger Than Its PC Biz
The bubble pops way earlier than the news comes out. You can see it in the investment companies as their analysts start heavily promoting whatever is about to pop to keep stock moving while divesting at the same time. Last thing they want is to be holding the bag.
crinkly··on Through the Liquid Glass
Not OP but you're right that it's probably metal shaders as it runs on pre-RT capable iPhones. But I've tried it my spare 13 Pro. It's laggy as hell on the betas. Like really laggy. If it goes into RC/release like that it'll go down like a lead balloon.
crinkly··on Through the Liquid Glass
Yeah this. I'd rather we have NeXTstep back than pastel blurry glassware oblivion.

I have a longing for 10.4 on my old plastic Intel iMac at this point.

crinkly··on Anduril's product engineering machine
Sounds like when I worked for a defence contractor in the 90s. Felt owned from the moment I woke up until I fell asleep. Didn’t feel human.

Just woke up one day and thought fuck it and never went back in. Took 6 months off, went on holiday, slept on my parents sofa and eventually got a shit job wrangling C. Best job ever that was. Better money, unlimited decent coffee, 9-5 hours, a window, a phone on my desk and my own SPARCstation 20.

crinkly··on Will AI Replace Human Thinking? The Case for Writing and Coding Manually
At best it churns out mediocre to poor code so it’ll produce mediocre to poor thinking.

I wonder if some of the proponents know where the line is in the art. I suspect not.

crinkly··on Windows 11 Update KB5063878 Causing SSD Failures
The biggest problem with this is near zero communications from Microsoft. But what do I expect these days? Shovel AI in everything at any cost.

I’ve had repeatable data loss recently from windows 11 under a specific condition copying directories in explorer. The case works on windows 10 LTSC fine. I have absolutely no idea where to even raise this as an issue now. I’m not sure I even give a fuck.

crinkly··on Sci-Hub has been blocked in India
It's only blocked on certain ISPs in the UK. Mine (Zen) is not blocked.
crinkly··on Word documents will be saved to the cloud automatically on Windows going forward
I have a colour cal 5k display. That’s not streamable in any sensible way. Nor do I want the latency or interface disparity.
crinkly··on Word documents will be saved to the cloud automatically on Windows going forward
I've tried those (and RawTherapee). They are nowhere even near half the way to Lightroom.
crinkly··on The GitHub website is slow on Safari
I didn't buy it or agree to them anyway :)
crinkly··on Word documents will be saved to the cloud automatically on Windows going forward
That hasn't happened on Mac at least. If it does I will go to Linux.
crinkly··on The GitHub website is slow on Safari
Wait until you plug it into JIRA, strap copilot and actions on it. Then you can have all flavours of hell at once. Our org has ground to a halt.

A lot of the time we just break the branch permissions on the repo we are using and run release branches without PRs and ignore the entire web interface.

crinkly··on Word documents will be saved to the cloud automatically on Windows going forward
Only thing that keeps me off Linux is Lightroom and Photoshop. Nothing even remotely comparable. So it's Mac for me, but I get you.
crinkly··on Word documents will be saved to the cloud automatically on Windows going forward
Glad I don't have to use Word any more or Windows. Everything is in TeXShop+LaTeX for me now. Just files on the disk as it should be.
crinkly··on Ask HN: Why hasn't x86 caught up with Apple M series?
I suspect the majority of people who recommend particular x86 laptops have only had x86 laptops. There’s a lot of disparity in quality between brands and models.

Apple is just off the side somewhere else.

crinkly··on Ask HN: Why hasn't x86 caught up with Apple M series?
Having used both types extensively my dell matte display diffuses the reflections so badly that you can’t see a damn thing. The one that replaced it was even worse.

I’ll take the apple display any day. It’s bright enough to blast through any reflections.

crinkly··on macOS 26 Tahoe's Dead Canary Utility App Icons
That made me laugh because that’s exactly what it is.
crinkly··on Is 4chan the perfect Pirate Bay poster child to justify wider UK site-blocking?
Online petitions give voice to people who can felt heard but ignored.
crinkly··on It is worth it to buy the fast CPU
Compiler is usually IO bound on windows due to NTFS and the small files in MFT and lock contention problem. If you put everything on a ReFS volume it goes a lot faster.

Applies to git operations as well.

crinkly··on Leaving Gmail for Mailbox.org
+1 for organic maps. Have used it hiking and travelling all over the world. Never had any issues with it.

Not had any GPS problems other than that time I was in an area where it was being jammed. Bloody Russians.

crinkly··on From M1 MacBook to Arch Linux: A month-long experiment that became permanenent
As the owner of an M4 Pro and an Intel Ultra 7 laptop, the M4 pro is uncomfortably cold most of the time. The ultra 7 is uncomfortably hot.

The Mac sucks in the winter. The PC sucks in the summer.

The PC is however entirely unusable due to that without plugging an external mouse and keyboard in which is the problem.

crinkly··on The theory and practice of selling the Aga cooker (1935) [pdf]
Semi-related, but they aren’t the status symbol they used to be. I know a guy who did quite well out of removing Agas for a few years because they are so expensive to run. Apparently up to 20x the cost of more sensible equipment. They were sold for scrap metal value because people weren’t buying them any more. He charged them to remove it and got paid scrap value.

The worst one I heard was someone who paid £10k for their top end Aga, found it was costing £700 a month to run and it was scrap in under a year.

Dead technology.

crinkly··on Go is still not good
I dislike Go but I haven’t found anything else I dislike less.
