crimbles··on The M2 is more advanced than it seemed
Not an issue for me even on my bottom end M2 mini.
crimbles··on Vanna.ai: Chat with your SQL database
I can't wait until it naively does a table scan on one of our several TB tables...
crimbles··on Skiff: Various Privacy Failures
I was actually including NCC in that one...

Interesting read. I will point out that having seen "security audits" done by top tier well known security companies, they aren't worth the paper they are written on. They are selling you a pen test script run, the output of which is farted into a document for the least amount of time they can expend on it.

If you want security, you have to do it in house with competent people who understand your business domain. So when I see people with regular pen tests I know they don't really give a shit because they are doing minimal ass coverage.

crimbles··on Margaret Mead, the Cold War, and the Troubled Birth of Psychedelic Science
Yes they are 100% related. The side effect was triggering underlying schizophrenia. Which is why we need controlled research.

Well that's not how you need to test it really and is not an objective measure. That's a badly posed question. It should be compared to other forms of therapy. And the criteria for entering therapy needs to be understood.

YMMV. I took LSD. It didn't do a whole lot other than make me think I could play the piano when I definitely can't. The only life changing thing was I was down some cash which I could have spent on something else. A friend at the time took it and killed themselves a month later.

Point is there are no absolutes and a lot of romanticism and anecdotes around it when we need science. But it's difficult to be anything but subjective about it if you have experienced it. I suspect any critical thinking becomes biased and that relationship requires some analysis as well.

Boring take I know but to pose a question: at the level of society if it is normalised, does taking psychedelics have a general positive or a general negative outcome?

crimbles··on Towards Modern Development of Cloud Applications (2023)
Yeah exactly that. DCOM+DTC+MSMQ is the old new and the new old.
crimbles··on Multiply – a book about calculators I helped create
This is really cool. Thanks for doing it. I will download and read in detail.

Collector of HP calculators here. I have way too many (11 last count!) :)

crimbles··on Ask HN: Who else is working on nothing?
I'm past that stage. I built a business in the 2000's and hosed it completely because I had no idea what I was doing. Then I spent a lot of the 2010's trying to conceptualise and create something I believe in which was similarly futile on the probabilistic scale. I figured at the end of it that it's futile and embarked on a journey of self improvement which devolved in chaos and nihilism.

Now I exist in a world of laughing maniacally at this shit show while raking in the cash from pretending I give a fuck about things like microservices and AngularJS, sleeping through hours of meetings, drinking a hell of a lot of really good wine and spending my spare time travelling all over the world and hooking up with floozies in bars and doing things which my parents would frown about.

Do what makes you happy and fuck everything else. Seriously. Leave no regrets.

Anyway I'm sure the HN community will frown upon this. I know I do :)

crimbles··on Axiom – A scientific computation system
I use Maxima regularly as it was what I was taught at university. It is updated regularly. It's cranky as hell but it works. Sometimes I use the CAS on my calculator, mostly to check my own work, because it hurts less. That's an HP Prime with Giac/Xcas on it.
crimbles··on M1 Macs may lag behind
We are using it for parsing and classification as well and have done a full internal study. The case is financial data collection. There are three side-by-side approaches we are comparing. Human-only, human-led, and ML-only. The only viable outcome for what we are doing is still human-only. The net cost of correcting the mistakes the ML makes in the human-led model are higher than the human-only model. The ML-only model has a capital risk higher than the value of our business. We're still experimenting with training but at least in our case, it's a poor solution.

Ergo YMMV and we shouldn't be spilling absolutes about it. It looks like it might work but does it really? We work in a very intellectually dishonest fashion-driven industry. Some objectivity would be nice in arguments.

As for writing code, I find it does a reasonable job of boilerplate but hits the crack pipe almost always if you stretch it. Then again that's better than any junior developer I've worked with so there is some utility there.

crimbles··on The Cult of Mac
As a non-cult dumb Apple end user, I'm slightly fed up of people talking on behalf of me and telling me what is good for me.

The only app I ever paid for through the store was Pixelmator (desktop) and that was when it was $10 a number of years ago. I don't have any paid iPhone apps at all. The impact of the store on me as an end user is mostly zero.

I haven't had to repair anything yet. I've got phones going back to 2015 which have had new batteries and that's it. I took them to Apple and they sorted it within a couple of hours each time. I had one display issue on a 6s back in 2016 and they just gave me a new phone there and then in the store that day. Also you can buy official parts and equipment to repair your stuff from them as well.

I barely use iMessage. It's not a controversy. Everyone here (UK) uses WhatsApp. Half the people out there, even on iPhones don't even know or care what iMessage is.

My mac just sort of works mostly. I have a PC too because I have two bits of software I can't get rid of yet. I'd rather use the Mac because it doesn't kick me in the balls every 30 minutes like the PC does. The PC is a dire experience from hell (Windows 11). And I've got a lot of experience with Linux running back over 25 years and then a decade of commercial unix before thaet. I don't want to take the day job home thanks.

As for privacy, what other options do I have? It's not perfect but it's the least bad. I either use an android infested with microsoft stuff which is full of Telemetry as well as Google stuff which is infested with advertising and tracking or I use just Google stuff which is infested with advertising and tracking or I get a defanged Android which adds a thousand layers of friction to every day of my life.

My position is distinctly "meh" at this point when I hear people telling me what is good for me because they're not telling me that. They're telling me what I am doing is bad for me then going silent when they're asked to cough up a better solution.
