creyes··on Announcing: Our Online Learning Platform Upcase Is Now Free
I've used Upcase extensively over the years to learn things like TDD and VIM. It's one of the few resources out there for people who already know programming fundamentals and want to get to the next level. I happily paid for it for a long time so it's exciting that now it's free!
creyes··on Ask HN: What are some of the best technical talks you've heard?
Implementing a Strong Code-Review Culture: Derek Prior (2015) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJjmw9TRB7s

I guess this is more of a 'soft talk' but I still reference this all the time and watch it at least once a year. One of the more relevant and practical talks for any software company.

Make a trade maybe? Google already pays Apple a significant amount to be the default search engine
creyes··on React Native at Airbnb
Me too. Last time I played with Ionic it was still mostly wrapped webviews though. And Vue-native is actually the worst. It transpiles Vue code into React Native code that then gets sent across the bridge to native apis.
creyes··on Goodbye, Denver Post. Hello, Blockchain
I'm not sure this guy has heard of the Koch brothers
creyes··on Stripe is building a Ruby typechecker
I've been working with Lucky and working with a bit of Crystal - it's still not quite there yet. When we were working on a recent release of Lucky we found a kinda breaking in the compiler that the team fixed pretty quickly but it still shows just how new it is. I'm optimistic for 1.0 though

That said, Flow style gradual/optional typing in Ruby would be awesome

creyes··on Stripe to donate $1M to California Yimby
Idk about _the_ problem. Healthcare might be a bigger problem than housing - especially since astronomical medical bills and lack of insurance can cause people who had homes to lose them
creyes··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2018)
Vaporware | Software Developer | Full-Stack or Front End | Raleigh, NC | Full Time | ONSITE

Vaporware is a development consultancy based out of Raleigh, NC. We're a full stack shop specializing in Ruby on Rails but we've done a lot of React work recently and are looking to hire for either. We're a small team of passionate designers and developers helping clients take their ideas to market as fast as possible.

Email me carl@vaporwa.re or visit our job posting https://vaporware.breezy.hr/

creyes··on North American Object Storage Service Impact
I designed/deployed a decent sized Meraki network about 4 years ago - at the time it was one of the larger full-stack Meraki networks that exists. An 11 site school district with the edge, all idfs, ap's, phones and at a a later point some of their cameras.

Meraki still thinks of themselves a startup, but they have these "uh-oh's" all the time. Random bad firmware that turns off the 5g channel on the MR42's. A DPI "upgrade" that blocked ALL SSL traffic (which at this point is basically all traffic). Their solution was always to try "beta" firmware... in production... in the middle of state-mandated online testing.

I was a huge advocate for them but at some point it's gonna be hard for me to keep recommending them. They're so excited about new features but really fail about 1) fixing bugs and 2) ensuring robustness. The "fail fast fail often" mentality really shouldn't work with critical infrastructure

creyes··on How a Reddit forum has become a lifeline to opioid addicts in the US
My company (https://pelorushealth.com) is a remote case-management/recovery coach app suit for people who are recovery from substance abuse, namely opioids and alcohol.

One of our biggest blockers has been the existing recovery industry. Addiction is so stigmatized that getting people to use an app on their phone, even after treatment, is problematic because they feel like the data could get out that they're an addict. This is another reason more research isn't done. These existing facilities literally don't collect data - much less use it in any relevant way.

Value-based payments and growing oversight from insurance companies is changing that somewhat. These facilities are starting to be required to report outcomes data - so from a business perspective we're good. But man this industry and it's privacy/secrecy are something else.

creyes··on Used GPUs flood the market as Ethereum's price drops below $150
also weird analogy cause the houses value will (theoretically) appreciate... a GPU prolly not so much.
creyes··on React Native at Instagram
Or smaller startups who need to support both platforms at launch. We're going through that right now and we definitely can't afford to pay for a java dev and a swift dev and a js engineer (me). We also can't afford the Dev Shop costs of both iOS and Android. and our customer base is split 65-35. React-Native is literally a gift sent from God to save us
creyes··on People in Los Angeles Are Getting Rid Of Their Cars
Fact. Just google'd average 1 bedroom rent in LA and I pay a good ~$1k more... mostly for walkability
creyes··on People in Los Angeles Are Getting Rid Of Their Cars
Yeah. Turo (formerly relayrides) is pretty sweet for getting whatever kind of car you need last minute.

creyes··on People in Los Angeles Are Getting Rid Of Their Cars
LA resident here. Got rid of my car 2 years ago and haven't looked back. A big difference for me is that I hate driving - especially here. The stress of it really got to me.

Financially, I'm not sure that I actually 'save' money. I live within 100yds of a ton of bars and restaurants, and a 5 minute walk to Trader Joes/Metro. I Uber most places but also take the Metro to DTLA and Santa Monica pretty often.

The whole car payment/insurance/gas/maintenance costs for sure are more than what I pay to Uber/Metro but what I'm not sure how to value the 'cost of walking.' I definitely pay a premium for my location and I often wonder, if I lived in a less convenient area (had to drive to groceries, far from Metro) if I'd be able to not have a car. Because as it stands, car costs < uber/metro/rent premium
