crecker··on Ask HN: Which are the best open source books?
E.g. of an open source book: https://hefferon.net/linearalgebra/index.html "Linear Algebra" by Jim Hefferon.

crecker··on Drift. A self-hostable open-source Gist clone
Wished to have it with Golang! One binary to build and deploy to all my clients websites. There are a lot of people that want their self hosted Gist clone just to keep the notes internally.
crecker··on Restic 0.13.0
Thanks! Will try tonight to play with Restic
crecker··on Restic 0.13.0
I wonder if you can obtain that behavior with a bash script, but it's boring to write scripts and I do not know if SIGTERM can exit Restic gracely.

crecker··on Detecting Monero Miners with Bpftrace
I do not think it's possible to mine using RandomX and a browser.

From docs: > Web mining is infeasible due to the large memory requirement and the lack of directed rounding support for floating point operations in both Javascript and WebAssembly.

So you can do whatever you want, but you will end with nothing.

crecker··on Ask HN: Mods: block posts of websites that have heavy/annoying ads
Annoying/heavy advertisement !== any Ads
crecker··on Ask HN: Mods: block posts of websites that have heavy/annoying ads
I do not know how to better phrase the title. If anyone has a suggestion, please let me know and I'll try to edit.

My proposal is that Hacker News mods should block any posts that involves any websites with heavy and annoying ads. HN represents for the average "marketing" person a good source for spamming some nice articles but with annoying ads.

Thinking “Outside the Box”: Unconstrained Creative Generation in Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

> Creative generation is structured around existing knowledge and task examples, yet overreliance on specific examples may limit imagination (Ward, T. B., Finke, R. A., & Smith, S. M., 1995). The constraining influence of knowledge during creative generation may be offset by conceptual expansion, a process of thinking outside traditional conceptual boundaries, which may be heightened by distractibility and mild executive dysfunction (Abraham, A., Windmann, S., Daum, I., & Güntürkün, O., 2005). The present study explored the constraining effects of knowledge in adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a disorder characterized by impaired attention and inhibitory control (Barkley, R. A., 1997). College students with and without ADHD were compared on two creative generation measures: an alien fruit invention task that required participants to imagine fruit that might exist on another planet (Ward, T.B., 1994), and a product label invention task wherein the goal was to invent product names without using elements of task examples (Kray, L.J., Galinski, A.D. & Wong, E.M., 2006). ADHD participants created alien fruit that diverged more from Earth fruit and labels that conformed less to examples, relative to non-ADHD peers. Results suggest that adults with ADHD may be less constrained by knowledge during creative generation. Findings are discussed in terms of theoretical import and practical implications for individuals with ADHD.

crecker··on Tell HN: GitHub is down again
Ha. I checked HN for the same reason, I was not able to reach Github via university network and I thought that was the time my university messed up with DNS.

HN seems to be going down for the massive amount of requests!

crecker··on Tell HN: GitHub is down again
I would not be impressed if they hear about the down for a trending thread on HN.

crecker··on Effective Go
> Why is there no pointer arithmetic?

Safety. Without pointer arithmetic it's possible to create a language that can never derive an illegal address that succeeds incorrectly. Compiler and hardware technology have advanced to the point where a loop using array indices can be as efficient as a loop using pointer arithmetic. Also, the lack of pointer arithmetic can simplify the implementation of the garbage collector.

crecker··on SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket will launch NASA's Europa Clipper to icy Jupiter moon
LMAO. You're using internet technology to post this message and you consider a space mission as "waste". A space mission pones a lot of problems, from communication to logistic management. A few of the problems they had in the past with the first space missions were resolved, and technologies were ported to Earth and everyday life.

crecker··on Cryptocurrency Is an Abject Disaster
> This rant has been a long time coming and is probably one of the most justified expressions of anger I've written for this blog yet. However, it will probably be the last one.

You're free to disagree whatever you wish to, but from this to "I'm ashamed to share an industry". Hey man, who are you? Then I'm ashamed to share the web with you. It's fine to disagree/agree/comment, but I'm little bit triggered of your words.

TL;DR: "cryptocurrencies is evil", but you are not understanding that it's not the technology that is evil. Cryptocurrency is a tool, and as a tool, many aspects of it depend on the people that use it. Let's then rant about AI (that is used for military scopes, so must be evil!) and IoT (ahh those chips that can not be found!!1111! Crisis!).

You're not ranting about cryptocurrencies, you're ranting about attackers. I would personally remove your last words about "ashamed".

[spoiler: I work with cryptocurrencies, sorry]

crecker··on How to Write a Technical Book
Thanks for the feedback of the article! I appreciated it :- )

Writing a technical book is a nice experience if you feel confident. If you have the passion and dedication to write, it'll be a journey with the "side-effect" of earning exposure and if you're lucky, also money. But you should not write a technical book for money (set as the first goal).

Marketing a book, especially a technical one, is difficult and requires time. Since most of the times it's suitable for a niche, you have to look for people and to explain why reading your book would be worth it. Does it contain any special feature that makes it unique? A particular focus? A well-written introduction?

I'd like to discuss about the points you marked. "The best way to start a book is writing". When you have the inspiration of writing, it seems "you do not have to think too much about details, a possible outline". It's partially correct and wrong. On one hand, to publish a book, you need content and what's the best way to create content? Yes, it's writing! On the other hand, people are not looking at your book for "content", BUT for highly quality content. Thus, not only you have to write the content, you have also to think about the structure, the outline, the key-points, and many others element that keeps the reader "on" your book.
