crazypython··on Netdata: Open-source real-time monitoring platform
Haven't been able to use its graphical interface to view historical data. At least it uses fewer resources than Grafana.
crazypython··on Reading the AGPL
Originally FSF wanted GPLv3 to be AGPLv3, but some corporate GPL users didn't want it. So you should use AGPLv3.
crazypython··on Grafana, Loki, and Tempo will be relicensed to AGPLv3
> if you decided that you now need different constraints.

AGPL can be linked against GPL.

crazypython··on Grafana, Loki, and Tempo will be relicensed to AGPLv3
AGPL can be combined with GPL and vice versa. GPL does not require open-sourcing if it stays on your computer or the computer of your company and its employees. This makes AGPL a much weaker copyleft when on a server.

> freedom of movement as power to take someone else's job in another town

Freedom of movement is the power to exchange goods and services with anyone.

> freedom of speech as power to manipulate masses

Freedom of speech is only a freedom if it is accompanied by a potential hearer's freedom to block speech. Modern platforms do not let you choose what or who you want to hear. Freedom of speech without freedom to choose your censor is anarchy.

> Lack of competition is what lets developer's exert power over users, and while copyleft licenses help with that, they're neither required nor sufficient to prevent abuse of power.

You are ignoring the freedom to modify/fork, plus the requirement of free documentation.

crazypython··on .NET MAUI: .NET Multi-Platform App UI
> If the "open web platform" stops requiring an entire Chromium engine in the app, I would agree.

PWA. FileSystem API is coming.

> Or if Google wasn't the sole effective standards body for it.

Agreed.

crazypython··on .NET MAUI: .NET Multi-Platform App UI
The real "Write once, run anywhere" technology is the open web platform. Now with SIMD, WebGPU, Houdini, and more. Container queries built-in for responsive layouts. Run on touchscreens, virtual reality, desktop and more.

I expect HTML/CSS/JS performance optimization to be valued as a skill more. It is arguably great cross-platform technology (though lacking native widgets), but it has a lot of performance footguns, which we need people to be disciplined about.

crazypython··on Grafana, Loki, and Tempo will be relicensed to AGPLv3
That document is based on lies. AGPLv3 does not force you to make code running on a different server open-source.
crazypython··on Grafana, Loki, and Tempo will be relicensed to AGPLv3
Note that the AGPLv3 has an exception allowing you to link to GPLv3. GPLv3 allows for private use, in other words keeping changes secret as long as they stay on your own computer.

In effect, it becomes a weak copyleft- akin to MPL-2.0 where as long as you keep it in separate files code can stay closed-source.

crazypython··on Show HN: I made a Hacker News for the automotive industry
Firebase is easy to set up but pricey to scale and hard to migrate off of.
crazypython··on Show HN: I made a Hacker News for the automotive industry
Good luck having automotive engineers read it!
crazypython··on GitHub reinstated youtube-dl but restoring forks is apparently a problem
Maybe he secretly posts under an alt. Some suspect this on Twitter.
crazypython··on GitHub reinstated youtube-dl but restoring forks is apparently a problem
Question: Do you usually read HN in any form (comments, stories, having friends curate from HN for you), or just comment on GitHub-related articles?
crazypython··on Librem 14 begins shipping
FSF chooses to draw the line between "hardware" and "software" at "read-writable."

Arguably if Alexa's AI was burned onto a ROM, you could argue the entire Alexa speaker was a hardware appliance.

The alternative is requiring a microwave's control software to be fully free.

crazypython··on Librem 14 begins shipping
They developed software and hardware to disable it. https://puri.sm/learn/intel-me/
crazypython··on Librem 14 begins shipping
> r.w.-memory becomes r.o. can actually make hardware change from not-free into free.

It's about equal rights. For instance, if the manufacturer can provide security updates, but you can't, they can notify the NSA about security holes first before providing the update. Whereas if it is r.w. for all, anyone can provide security updates.

crazypython··on Is It Feasible to Detect Chrome?
This works for Brave, as Brave enabled user agent change for DDG: https://stackoverflow.com/a/56459333/1459669
crazypython··on SQLite the only database you will ever need in most cases
Some sites break due to not expecting the exception being thrown– deviantart.com won't work, for instance.
crazypython··on FTP is 50 years old
I see. I would retract my statement if HN let me edit.
crazypython··on FTP is 50 years old
ASCII is a very obvious format. If you take the english alphabet and symbols, it fits almost perfectly in the first 7 bits. In 5th grade I tried encoding English in binary, and noticed how I accidentally reinvented ASCII.
crazypython··on FTP is 50 years old
Older technologies are more reliable and last longer, because they have survived the changes of time. That also means if you learn older technology (my rule of thumb is 15+– think Elixir, Lisp, Haskell, Python, Java, C++), your knowledge is unlikely to expire.
crazypython··on Turkey bans use of cryptocurrencies for payments
A currency linked to the price of oil would be a good idea for reducing volatility. That doesn't appear what the Petro is, though.
crazypython··on Turkey bans use of cryptocurrencies for payments
Download a Bitcoin full node. It only uses 5GB of disk space and a bit of RAM. It can be run over Tor. https://bitcoinknots.org/

Custodial solutions like Coinbase can be banned. Full nodes are much harder to ban.

crazypython··on Java Is Underhyped
> Python projects that start to grow has a tendency to become hard to manage in a way that I have not seen in Java at all.

Mypy is excellent. It has two-way type inference like Haskell. Good usage means catching almost all type errors before running.

So is PyCharm, which is IntelliJ for Python.

crazypython··on Cool data embedded in the Bitcoin blockchain
> every device that maintains a copy of the chain.

Of the full chain. You can run a Bitcoin full node in pruned mode, only using the most recent 5GB, with more or less the same security. (A 3-day chain reorg would be needed to reduce the security of your full node.)

It does make it take longer to set up a pruned node, though.

crazypython··on The GNU Assembly
Unlike the official GNU Kind Communication guidelines, its Contributor Covenant Code of Conduct:

- does not condemn misgendering trans people - endorses censorship and banning people (which GNU historically never has done) - does not provide guidelines for constructive guidelines

However, it does provide harassment standards.

crazypython··on Don’t we all just want to use SQL on the front end?
Seems like SQL language needs a better security model.
crazypython··on Cohort IDs can be collected over time to create cross-site tracking IDs
Ad networks often show us ads we don't want to see, and don't show us ads we want to see.

One of the problems I see with is FLoC is that giving the user direct control over their cohort ID.

crazypython··on Cohort IDs can be collected over time to create cross-site tracking IDs
I hear the performance and memory usage of WebKitGTK is much worse than WebKit on macOS.
crazypython··on SQLite the only database you will ever need in most cases
Firefox uses SQLite for localStorage. When Firefox is force quit, the database becomes corrupted. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1341070

This bug has occurred to me personally multiple times.

Does it really have advantages over a flat file?
