crazyjncsu··on Uber and Lyft shutdown in California averted as judge grants emergency stay
Uber drivers pay taxes on earnings as contractors too. This at least partially covers ACA subsidies (if not fully).

And we subsidize employer-provided healthcare also, hence its existence.

crazyjncsu··on Zillow 2020 Urban-Suburban Market Report
Your whole comment seems insane to me.

Do you actually think like this yourself? Or are you just positing that others do?

You do realize that foreclosure has very negative long term consequences?

You do realize there are available forms of housing for every income bracket that allow you to live within your means?

crazyjncsu··on Weighing a Car with Tire Pressures
Or go to the metal scrapyard instead, and leave with a few dollars more than you came with! (and get weighed) .. and if you have a pickup truck, you get to see them use this cool magnet to suck your junk out of the bed ;)
crazyjncsu··on Why the US military usually punishes misconduct but police often close ranks
This is already very much a thing that has driven improvements: https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2019/03/22/705914833/epis...

In fact, there have been many such forces, technology being o a big one, which have driven many such improvements over the years. It just isn’t moving fast enough to save everyone.

crazyjncsu··on DuckDuckGo, Google, and Android choice screens
And many here are too young to remember the hellscape of competing search engines predating Google: Infoseek, excite, yahoo, altavista, etc.

Their poor experience and dubious practices likely spawned Google's internal motto: "don't be evil"

crazyjncsu··on Tesla adds bidirectional charging capability
So I also have a 75kw whole-house generator that runs on propane, installed by the original owners.

If you think don't think a portable deal is a PITA, try something 10x the size.

My last encounter with it was discovering it was sucking down 1kw of power continuously (for at least 3 months, costing $200+) while trying to keep the coolant heated ... in the middle of the summer ... only to discover it had little-to-no coolant.

I found a family of snakes living in it.

I have no idea on the state of the battery, except for that it has one, so I suspect I'll be replacing that if I ever want to use it.

This is all stuff I don't mind doing, but that cuts into my free time that I'd rather be spending with my family.

crazyjncsu··on Tesla adds bidirectional charging capability
Yeah, but generators are a PITA. Mine has at best a 50/50 chance of starting without having to go to the shop to clean the carb, etc.

It would be quite nice to know I had quick, reliable power on tap that is regularly tested just in the normal course of my life.

crazyjncsu··on How to speed up the Rust compiler in 2020
> during development builds

That's the key phrase in his statement.

I'm not familiar with Rust, but if compilation speed is a major issue, and there are aspects of the compilation that are avoidable to trade-off for runtime performance, it seems to be a good idea to make those configurable per-build-type. Does Rust not offer this?

crazyjncsu··on Intel Refreshes 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable, Slashes Prices
OVH bare metal is what we use when we need cheap raw horsepower. Mentioning them is usually controversial, which is why I refrained in my parent comment, but we’ve had nothing but success.
crazyjncsu··on Intel Refreshes 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable, Slashes Prices
> It's pretty crazy how cheap hardware is compared to the cloud these days

By “the cloud” I’m assuming you mean aws/gcp/azure, and comparing them simply with on-prem is a false dichotomy. There are plenty of other cloud and bare metal hosting providers who actually pass on the savings as hardware value improves.

crazyjncsu··on A half-hour to learn Rust
C# 7 (2017) and higher also allows underscores in number literals.
crazyjncsu··on The Zen of Go
> Writing elegant and artful code that is hard to understand and debug does not make you a clever developer

The whole purpose, to me, of artfulness in code is to take unartful, hard to understand code and make it simple. What other objective is there?

crazyjncsu··on Power generation from ambient humidity using protein nanowires
Absolutely yes. Dehumidification typically involves a full refrigeration cycle. It's like leaving a refrigerator running with the doors wide open, the only purpose being to drain out the few drops of water that drip off the condenser coil every minute. Not a very productive process.

And any process which provides energy-free dehumification would also have the secondary (or primary) benefit of providing energy-free freshwater.

I'd imagine they've thought of both the above applications, and their protein nanowires aren't suitable.

crazyjncsu··on Mist Showers: Sustainable Decadence?
Thanks, but I'll stick with my Commando 450: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMITcQUe-9M

But seriously, even I get concerned with the green movements when they seem to be coming for each part of my life I hold sacred-- a nice warm shower (or two!) is a highlight of my day.

And to rationalize: I am also constantly looking for ways to reduce energy usage, so I looked into capturing the heat lost from a shower. First I measured the difference in the shower head outlet temperature and the drain temperature. I found about 75% of the heat is released before even entering the drain. So it goes into my body (yay), the air, or the floor system. I suspect the majority of the next 25% is released in the drain system that is either part of the conditioned space of the house or in the semi-conditioned crawlspace. So the heating cost/fuel of the water is offsetting my HVAC cost/fuel. Additionally, the shower boosts humidity which is the #1 energy efficient method of feeling warmer in a cold, dry house.

Notes: If you can leave the water to cool down by not draining a tub, you'll gain even more. Or take a bath.

If you're using electricity to resistant-heat your water (highly inefficient), you should address that first.

This doesn't apply in the summer, so I bathe in the outdoor pool, usually.
