crazydiamond··on Vmail - A Gmail client in Vim
I have been trying this out. It's great.

Some key bindings do conflict such as C-p with Yankring. Also, need to be able to configure to use with links or elinks and not just lynx.

I hope the author keeps working on this.

crazydiamond··on Ask HN: What's your favorite IDE?
Vim. Please see recently posted link: Coming Home to Vim. http://stevelosh.com/blog/2010/09/coming-home-to-vim/

And also: http://www.swaroopch.com/blog/bash-vim-setup/

crazydiamond··on Which music track you listen to while coding
Instrumental. Cinemix on iTunes. Favorite is Hanz Zimmer's soundtracks.
crazydiamond··on Writing your first Vim plugin using Ruby
Great. I've always wanted to write plugins. Would really appreciate if this could be followed up with a few more samples with some more functionality. Such as opening a small input window at the bottom for input and one for selection (as say in Command-T or fuzzy file finder).
crazydiamond··on What does it feel like to be stupid? An anonymous Quora user explains.
Another thing i can tell you about how it feels. You'll have to get used to being a loner. It's not hard to make friends since people find you to be open and simple. But then when you have nothing to say, they vanish. It's strange how ultimately friendship can be more about what the other person says rather than what the person is.

However, one learns to accept this as how the world is, and there's no ill-feeling or depression associated with it.

crazydiamond··on What does it feel like to be stupid? An anonymous Quora user explains.
Well, for one I know I'll never write any spectacular piece of software that will really make a difference. My only half-decent contributions were to port a library from one language to another.

As you rise in rank, you are associating with people who are all of higher intelligence. I made whatever i could on dint of twice the effort and reading a lot more. I am fortunate I was able to save enough money since i reached a stage where I knew i could not continue to be employed. I was too old to be a continue at middle management, and too stupid to move to higher management. I've retired and lead a slow life living on savings. I do programming for fun, but no-brainer stuff.

Sometimes I do think i am blessed with stupidity. Most intelligent people i know are miserable, spending their entire lives chasing wealth or becoming something to be happy.

crazydiamond··on What does it feel like to be stupid? An anonymous Quora user explains.
The title says stupid but the details are about slow and forgetful. Forgetful people can be quick witted and brilliant.

I can tell your from personal experience that being stupid does not feel good especially when you know it. You never "get it" when others talk, you never have anything to say, you are always saying and doing the wrong things, or not doing what should have been done.

I do agree there's a lot more to enjoy. One is not critical and cynical. I like a lot more people, food, music than my smarter siblings. I am very happy walking in parks, looking at trees, or petting animals. Life is simpler.

crazydiamond··on Life in Text Mode
Is luakit a Linux only software, or does it work on OSX, too.
crazydiamond··on Life in Text Mode
I use ffmpeg a lot to extract the audio from video's I've downloaded from youtube. Does anyone use any command-line youtube downloaders that still work? I use one written in awk (pete krumins). The others stopped working a while back.
crazydiamond··on Life in Text Mode
Does anyone still use "mc" ?

I like vifm (vi-like file manager), although i can't say i fire it up too often.

microemacs (jasspa's) has a nice inbuilt file manager (F10).

crazydiamond··on Life in Text Mode
what are your updated/better choices ? Thanks.

I use links (i/o lynx). And vim.

crazydiamond··on The Ruby Stdlib is not a Ghetto
awk, grep, sed, perl, cat, finger, man, etc
crazydiamond··on An Introduction to Meditation
So what questions do you have? Perhaps you should give an introductory post in this thread. I am going through the link, thanks for sharing. At the same time, you might also search other links on HN. There's been a lot of discussion on meditation here. Here's a thread from just a couple days back. http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1915750

I am still going through the youtube's pointed to in various posts from that thread.

crazydiamond··on A Vegan No More
Perhaps those who eat meat should slowly introduce vegetarianism into their diet (if they wish to) rather than going vegan straight.

I turned veg about 15 years back (but still ate an egg). My haemoglobin count actually went up by a point (a year later). About 5 years ago, i gave up eggs too. A year later my Haemo was up by another half point.

I do have a small amount of milk in tea/coffee. In India, there are millions of vegetarians who live without health problems. Veganism seems a little extreme to us.

crazydiamond··on A Starting Guide to VIM from Textmate
Are you not aware that '*' (asterisk) searches for the next occurrence of the word under the cursor. That's one key i just can't live without. '#' (hash) does the reverse.

Why not do a 'qq' to record your macro as 'q' and @q to replay it.

crazydiamond··on Being Vegan is worse for the environment?
> Last I checked, unless vegans are supplementing their diets with multivitamins, they lack all the necessary nutrients needed to survive.

Plenty of us have been surviving for many generations (in Asia). The numbers are reducing today not due to nutritional reasons, but social .. peer pressure, travelling to the West etc.

crazydiamond··on Being Vegan is worse for the environment?
While doing such studies one should be careful when considering alternatives. The article refers to tofu as an alternative. Many Vegans (e.g. in India) do not consume tofu, so his comparison would fail there.
crazydiamond··on Buddhism and Happiness: Sitting Quietly, Doing Something
You don't necessarily have to do a sitting meditation. A walking meditation is good enough. Find a quiet park with lots of trees/greenery. Walk slowly, put attention on soles of feet, or breathing, or path in front. Anything but mind/thoughts. As thoughts come, bring attention back to breath/feet. Sooner or later (maybe days/weeks/months) you will clearly notice the presence, that which is (always) here. There will be some recognitions that only you can make. Some call it the "I am".

No, it is hard for the mind to understand, since the mind is quiet at this point. The mind itself is the disturbance that prevents us from knowing what is there when it is no longer "veiling" what is.

This is also called being in the present moment, being in the Now, abiding as the I-am, abiding as awareness etc. My first recognition was of what was real and what was not. Only you can make that recognition, it cannot be told and proved by someone else.

The second recognition was of myself being the silent awareness inside which the mind and the "I" was playing. The whole play of the personality or "personal self" is seen through. The suffering of this mental being crumbles. Can you imagine the freedom ? No wealth or power can buy this.

crazydiamond··on Two weeks with Vim
To the author (and this has been posted to HN before but deserves a reposting for those who missed it):

crazydiamond··on Letting your mind wander is a major cause of unhappiness
The several thousand year old practice of "Mindfulness". Derived from the earlier (pre-Buddhist) practice "Vipashyana" (i.e., clear seeing).

Yes, keeping one's mind centered, aka, in the present moment, in awareness, is being happy. Being happy without external causes.

Unhappiness is basically thought-forms or thought-waves saying "I am unhappy" or "I am bored" or "I will be happy when ...". There is no more reality to unhappiness than mere thought-forms. The underlying silence revealed by a still mind is happiness itself.

crazydiamond··on Zed Shaw, LPTHW, & Learn You An Ruby

Do we really need to be so specific to learn ruby ?

crazydiamond··on Hey Gmail, 1994 Called, It Wants Its Dial-Up Level Performance Back
I have a similar issue with google itself. on many days google.com just hangs. If i try google.co.in (India), i get instant response. However, my vimperator resolves "g" to google.com so I have to keep facing the hang.
crazydiamond··on Maruku: a Markdown-superset interpreter
maruku has been around for a long time. The last gem release was in May 2009. What's the point of posting this ?
crazydiamond··on Use Vim Like A Pro
If you program, please try SnipMate.vim. There are plenty more very helpful plugins, but this one is great and is programmable. And don't forget pathogen.vim. Yankring, command-T or fuzzyfinder, surround, repeat, align, ack and fugitive are others i recommend.

crazydiamond··on The Happiness-Suicide Paradox
Not sure if it's the "less developed lifestyle" or the adversity. When you have to fight corruption at each step, when there are problems with basic amenities like water, electricity, land shortage, class divides, language divides, then you do find a lot of friends who have the same issues as you. The above sounds a bit silly or ironic, but one hears of the miners who were trapped for months who built great friendships during those hard times. I am also reminded of that movie "Plenty".
crazydiamond··on Change your color temperature to fix your sleep patterns
I've been using f.lux for months. Not sure if its affected my sleep cycle but it does reduce glare to eyes. I already keep the brightness at the dimmest (osx), so i can't reduce it further at night. why is everyone putting a dot after the f ?
crazydiamond··on My first (quite pointless) Ruby website
Please put a checkbox for vegetarians.
crazydiamond··on The Happiness-Suicide Paradox
I come from a country (3rd world) where life is tough. That results in a lot of bonding and friendships. So despite adversities and misery there is a lot of happiness, too.

From what i see, Western society seems pretty lonely -- I often wonder if that's because there is nothing (no problems, no adversity) to bond people together.

crazydiamond··on Try Arc
Came across arc some months back. Could you give a link to Why Arc ?
