craigvn··on Startup Graveyard – History Shouldn't Have to Repeat Itself
> The trouble here is that analysis like this tends to document the symptoms of failure as if they were the causes.

This also holds true for successful businesses!

For example, you will forever read books on successful companies and they will say things like "we were successful because we were agile". In reality that is probably not the case, more likely success was because of a million undefinable small things all mashed together.

craigvn··on Azure Database for MySQL and PostgreSQL
I think the management console has improved a lot in the last year.
craigvn··on This Is What a Modern-Day Witch Hunt Looks Like
My head hurts.
craigvn··on The Handmaid’s Tale is the most horrific thing I have ever seen
Because historically they have been the oppressors and in many countries still are.
craigvn··on The ORM Debate Still Rages On
That's pretty much what I do.
craigvn··on Programmers are most likely to work from home
I actually prefer working in the office. When at home there are too many distractions, too easy to go to the shops (or driving range) or start working on your own projects.
craigvn··on Ask HN: People above 35, would you risk your job and start a company?
I don't think it is really a factor of age, although age will possibly give you more experiences that make you wary. I think it is more that people > 35 often have mortgages, family, children etc. While you might be happy living on noodles for a year forcing that onto your kids is not fair.
craigvn··on Performance bugs – the dark matter of programming bugs
> Is it a bug if it's unseen?

It's not a bug, it's a feature. Gives you time to get coffee while the page loads.

craigvn··on Programming won’t be automated, or it already has been
IMO, devops is a special kind of sysadmin, one where you get rid of the sysadmin and tell the developer to do it.
craigvn··on Programming won’t be automated, or it already has been
Having been programming for a long time, automation has been talked about for a long time and never really happened. We have had CASE tools, RAD tools and so on, but users demand for new features and capabilities increases at the same rate as developer tool productivity increases meaning the developers are still required.
craigvn··on On Programming Languages: Why My Dad Went from Programming to Driving a Bus
I would think COBOL jobs are probably secure, they are not going to get rid of you quickly with few people available to replace you, but they are not abundant.
craigvn··on On Programming Languages: Why My Dad Went from Programming to Driving a Bus
Correct.
craigvn··on Apple starts rejecting apps with “hot code push” features
I would be cashing out now...!
craigvn··on Why Socialism for the Rich, Capitalism for the Poor?
Yes, Apple didn't invent the smart phone by a long shot. But they were smart enough to know how to make the smart phone consumer friendly, which is where a lot of tech companies fail. Look at PocketPC which proceeded iPhone, not friendly at all. Even my new Android phone is still pretty clunky UI wise compared to the iPhone it replaced.
craigvn··on Post-Olympic Abandonment
A single permanent site will never happen. What I think would be better would be like The Open golf, they have half a dozen locations that are rotated between in a semi-random fashion. Other locations can be added to the rota if they prove themselves. And the locations should be country based rather than city to spread the load.

But I think due to the corruption of the delegates that will never happen either, they get too many kickbacks from being part of the bidding process.

craigvn··on Reflecting on one very, very strange year at Uber
If you work with someone for a period and get to know them well then maybe asking them out might be ok. But straight up asking the new employee for sex never is.
craigvn··on 22 Years of Delphi and It Still Rocks
I think Office 365 can definitely stand alone and compare with something like Google Apps (GSuite). That many people use it in conjunction with offline Office is more a result of offline Office being the incumbent during the transition.
craigvn··on 22 Years of Delphi and It Still Rocks
Windows Forms is ok, but pretty slow and clunky if you come from using Delphi.
craigvn··on 22 Years of Delphi and It Still Rocks
2005 called and want's it's arguments back. Microsoft has been moving a lot of products to the web where possible, for example Office 365.
craigvn··on What Is the Oldest Computer Program Still in Use?
How do you justify to the person paying for it that you are are going to spend money to build essentially the same system? Often they don't really care if it is COBOL rather than something newer. The only way to justify is if the maintenance costs are higher than the redevelopment costs.
craigvn··on Oracle’s Cloud Licensing Change
Oracle is shit, but sounds like you should have used it from the start if the client didn't approve PostgreSQL.
craigvn··on What is Turkey’s problem with Darwin?
I would expect that Trump will be leant on heavily to push similar changes in the US. Maybe not throwing evolution away in schools, but teaching creationism alongside.
craigvn··on Trump bans EPA employees from giving social media updates
He appears to be exceptional at one thing, manipulating people. The right wing have been manipulated by Trump for his own agenda, which I suspect is just a lust for power. People seem to miss that Trump is trying to set up a dynasty, he plans after he ends as President to ensure his daughter/son/son-in-law are all succeeding him, like the Bush's or the Kennedy's but much greater.
craigvn··on 2016 was not the hottest year on record when including the margin of error
You only need to look at all of the other charts on this page to conclude this may not be an unbiased observer.
craigvn··on Some DNS lookups causing 5xx errors due to leap second bug
;-) 98% of developers would be clueless to leap second issues. Hell, 50% struggle with leap years.
craigvn··on When Ayn Rand Collected Social Security and Medicare, After Years of Opposition
The real question is, if her welfare expenses equaled or exceeded what she had "stolen" would she have stopped taking it back and been happy to die?
craigvn··on Microsoft Word for Windows Version 1.1a Source Code (2014)
"extremely frustrating to learn and operate efficiently."

This is pretty much same for everything. Could describe me trying to use a Mac after years on Windows.

craigvn··on Ask HN: Should I learn Bootstrap 3 or 4 at this moment?
Learn both, it's not rocket surgery.
craigvn··on For Some, Scientists Aren't the Authority on Science
If you dismiss government funded science and industry funded science as both being conflicted there is not much left.

> "a lot of it such "science" is used to justify increasing govt power." Is this really true, or does the science suggest actionable outcomes that you are confusing with power. I suppose the scientists could just say do nothing, but with so much to learn that would seem very regressive.

craigvn··on Ask HN: Is jQuery still a thing?
I was going to say the same thing. If you are building an app something like Angular is great. But for a website that needs to be simple, fast and easy to maintain then jQuery still works well.
