cpascal··on GitHub is now free for teams
This is completely unrelated to the announcement, but when will Enterprise Server ship support for GitHub Actions?
cpascal··on GitHub is now free for teams
I suspect Microsoft wants to capture as much developer mindshare as possible and then cross-sell Azure. Reducing/eliminating entry costs for commercial grade features helps to do that.

My new favorite YouTuber, CuriousMarc, has a whole series of videos about restoring the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC).

His channel is full of fascinating retro-computing and EE videos.

cpascal··on Amazon Isn’t the Only Shop Online
> Other than BestBuy, no other retailer "gets" ecommerce

Target.com is a pretty solid experience.

Walmart.com is also surprisingly good.

Although I'm sure people can provide horror stories for both retailers.

Buhner’s book is wonderful. Extremely well researched. Anecdotally, (n=3) his evidence-backed protocol worked to treat my family and I after antibiotics did not work.

Spot on.

DDG is my daily driver and I do not miss Google Search in the slightest. I rarely need to !g and its often futile because Google returns nearly the same results.

However, my favorite feature of DDG is it's native dark theme.

cpascal··on Please stop recommending Gitflow
> Have you ever tried a complex branching model like gitflow with multiple teams, and hoped for everyone to be on the same page?

My company does exactly this and I am happy to report there have been no issues. I think the key reason we don't have issues is we are strict about maintaining backwards compatibility between services and also try to maintain forwards compatibility where possible.

> “What’s in production” becomes an existential question, if you’re not careful.

We solved this by embedding the SHA's of a build's constituent repos in the build artifact.

cpascal··on Windows 10 live tiles reportedly getting killed by Microsoft
Thank god. The first thing I do on a new Windows 10 install is disable all that crap.
cpascal··on WHO says it no longer uses 'pandemic' category, but virus still emergency
I've been leaning towards this hypothesis lately. We haven't been seeing large increases in cases in countries in the more southern latitudes thus far. Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand India, Malaysia, and Australia have not been reporting large increases in cases like we are seeing in China, Italy, Iran, and South Korea.

Of course there is another explanation, these countries could be under-reporting or not detecting new cases...

cpascal··on New COVID-19 cases reported across Japan
It was a Benjamin Moore store. I must've been lucky.
cpascal··on New COVID-19 cases reported across Japan
1 gallon of water per person per day is recommended. This may seem excessive, but it factors in water for cooking and cleaning.
cpascal··on New COVID-19 cases reported across Japan
Should note that it's pretty warm in Singapore and they are definitely dealing with COVID-19.
cpascal··on New COVID-19 cases reported across Japan
I went to a paint supply store and they had a good number of N95's in stock.
cpascal··on New COVID-19 cases reported across Japan
I think its more likely than not that COVID-19 will progress into a global pandemic. I don't think its a bad or rash idea to begin preparing to self-isolate/quarantine before panic-buying of supplies begins. Having a stock of non-perishable food, medication, masks, and disinfectants will definitely make things easier if COVID-19 can not be contained.

I've been considering trying out a tiling window manager. I'm curious what people feel they gain using a tiling window manager versus something like Windows/Gnome's screen splitting features. Is it being able to arrange more windows on the screen than just side-by-side windows? Is it keyboard shortcut efficiencies? Is it just cool?
cpascal··on Mythical man month: 10 lines per developer day
I think for defect estimation you are right, but for feature estimation (new code, not fixing bad code) the correlation is positive.
cpascal··on Mythical man month: 10 lines per developer day
My company has been experimenting with doing our feature estimations in LOC changed instead of points (1, 2, 3, 5). The general idea being that point estimation can vary between engineers based on ability, but LOC changed should be similar among engineers. This is supposed to make it easier to answer management's favorite question of "How long is this gonna take?". The answer is calculated using a team's historical average LOC/hr rate.

It remains to be seen if our estimates are any better.

cpascal··on How Microsoft rewrote its C# compiler in C# and made it open source (2017)
The madness will hopefully be ending soon with .NET 5.

cpascal··on Coronavirus – The Status of the Outbreak and 4 Possible Scenarios
There's also the ongoing Phase 3 Remdesivir trial. [1] Which was used in the treatment of Washington's 2019-nCoV case. The patient appears to have begun recovering soon after the remdesivir was administered and was released shortly after. [2][3]

> Treatment with intravenous remdesivir (a novel nucleotide analogue prodrug in development) was initiated on the evening of day 7, and no adverse events were observed in association with the infusion. Vancomycin was discontinued on the evening of day 7, and cefepime was discontinued on the following day, after serial negative procalcitonin levels and negative nasal PCR testing for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

> On hospital day 8 (illness day 12), the patient’s clinical condition improved. Supplemental oxygen was discontinued, and his oxygen saturation values improved to 94 to 96% while he was breathing ambient air. The previous bilateral lower-lobe rales were no longer present. His appetite improved, and he was asymptomatic aside from intermittent dry cough and rhinorrhea. As of January 30, 2020, the patient remains hospitalized. He is afebrile, and all symptoms have resolved with the exception of his cough, which is decreasing in severity.

This is obviously just a single patient’s outcome and not proof that Remdesevir is effective, but it’s just about the only positive news related to 2019-nCoV. Hopefully the trial yields good results.

cpascal··on Rust Lang in a nutshell
If you are more of an interactive learner I would recommend installing rust on your machine and then cloning the rustlings repo https://github.com/rust-lang/rustlings.

Rustlings is an interactive collection of rust exercises that are either incorrect or incomplete. The exercises are grouped into key concepts of rust and cross referenced with relevant chapters in the rust book https://doc.rust-lang.org/book/

The general flow is to open up the given chapter of the rust book for a set of exercises and hack away at them until they compile. It's a good way to quickly get an introduction to rust and its core features.

cpascal··on Why Child Care Is So Expensive
Anecdotally, the margins can be fairly large. I am aware of one daycare in the NYC metropolitan area with around 100 students that PROFITS nearly $9000/yr/student.

Their teacher pay scale also tops out at $15/hr, but each teacher represents around a $8000/month revenue stream.

The daycare’s rent is about $40,000 a month.

cpascal··on Using Bee Stings to Treat Lyme Disease
To add: there’s also a cystic form of Borrelia burgdorferi.

The bacteria is a spirochete, similar to the bacteria responsible for Syphilis.

cpascal··on Uber Hit with $650M Employment Tax Bill in New Jersey
The official election results put it at 86% (46,062) in favor of the regulations (voted 'Yes' for public question #1).

Even more interesting is the number of 'No' votes (7,416) is less than the number of signatures on the petition that forced the ordinance into a public referendum (~20,000 with ~9,000 certified).

I believe the new ordinance restricts short-term rentals to owner-occupied units. So you would have to own the apartment.
