cowvin··on Twitter bans sharing images/videos of private individuals without their consent
Why not link to the actual Twitter announcement instead of some random account talking about it?
cowvin··on Firefox is the alternative to a Chrome hegemony
This is precisely why I've switched to Firefox in recent years. It's quite good these days. I don't even have Chrome installed on my current personal PC.
cowvin··on California Man in 4-Day Standoff with Abandoned Amazon Truck in Driveway
It sounds like it barely moves, so I'm guessing that's not an option. He doesn't have the pink slip so he can't really sell it or donate it properly.

Maybe he should start charging Amazon rent for the parking spot.

cowvin··on Ask HN: Do you listen to anything while working?
Hah, I'm the opposite. I listen to music that I'm very familiar with because I already know what's coming next. New music distracts me more because I end up paying attention to it to see if I like it, etc.
cowvin··on Hackers steal $130M from Cream Finance
What's a flash loan? They just lend you money with no collateral?
cowvin··on School wins legal battle to electric shock children to ‘correct behaviour’
> the remaining 30 shocks were given for screaming and tensing up while being shocked.

I wonder if "normal" people are expected not to scream and tense up while being shocked. I'm pretty sure most people I know would do the same.

cowvin··on Disabling /all chat in matchmade queues
I mean in World of Warcraft, Horde and Alliance could never chat freely with each other due to the language barrier so it wasn't full of trash talk.
cowvin··on Thousands register for geophysicist’s lecture after MIT caved to ‘Twitter mob’
This is race related in the same way that saying "All Lives Matter" is racist. It's not about the words that are stated, it's about the context as well.

When people are protesting about racial injustice toward some minorities, saying "All Lives Matter" is dismissing their concerns. It's like when someone goes to the police department saying "You need to protect me from a murderer" and an officer goes "Yeah, we need to protect everyone from murderers." Yes, that's true, but that's not a very helpful response to someone asking for help.

Likewise, the whole academic evaluation based on merit dismisses the idea that our current "objective" means of academic evaluation may not be as objective as they should be when considering race. Yes, we should evaluate students based on "merit" but we need to reconsider whether our current methods measure "merit" accurately.

cowvin··on Teachers Union Urges TikTok, Facebook, Others to Stop Spread of Viral Challenges
Well, whose job is it to enforce that? Are you suggesting we require social media companies to put age verification?
cowvin··on The richest Americans became 40% richer during the pandemic
Can we raise taxes on the rich yet?
cowvin··on Am I still fully vaccinated?
What a pointless article. Being "fully vaccinated" doesn't mean you're immune to COVID19 or something.
cowvin··on Left-Wing Authoritarianism Real and Needs Taken Seriously Political Psychology
Of course it's real. There is just far more right-wing authoritarianism right now, so that's what most people focus on.
cowvin··on DeFi bug accidentally gives $90M to users
Yep, crypto is more or less the same as traditional finance in this sense. A few powerful individuals already control a disproportionate amount of the crypto world.

Like the sketchy folks who run Tether and Binance at the same time.

Or Elon Musk tweets raising and lowering the value of Bitcoin by a significant amount.

Even Bitcoin itself is largely held by just a few people. It's just another tool for billionaires to get even richer.

cowvin··on Facebook accused of putting profits ahead of children’s safety
Yep, couldn't read the article due to paywall. In any case, corporations are entities obligated to seek profits for their shareholders. They are supposed to put profits ahead of children. This is why we need more regulations on corporations.
cowvin··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
> there are reports now that teenage boys might suffer myocarditis from the Pfizer vaccine. Incredibly rare, but the risk is not zero.

Another interesting factor at play here is that some people prefer for negative outcomes to come from inaction than action. It's like the trolley problem (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolley_problem) when people try to evaluate morality.

In this case, they would rather not take an action (get vaccinated) if there's a chance of harm and would prefer inaction (don't get vaccinated) despite the higher statistical risk of bad outcomes.

cowvin··on Show HN: The Odds of Dying from Covid-19 Compared to Risks from Extreme Sports
Yeah, unfortunately the image is really hard to read because it's so blurry. =/ Please try to fix it!
cowvin··on My Wife Was Dying of Brain Cancer. My Boss at Amazon Told Me to Perform or Quit
Family leave typically means you stop working while on leave and there will be a job waiting for you when your leave ends. Like with parental leave, you are typically expected to rely on government programs like disability insurance and such if you need to do so for a long time.
cowvin··on She Bought Her Dream Home. Then a ‘Sovereign Citizen’ Changed the Locks
Wow, I had no idea their whole belief system was based on conspiracy theories.
cowvin··on A search engine that favors text-heavy sites and punishes modern web design
i don't know, people here like to complain about google, but google still works pretty well for me.
cowvin··on Does the FDA think these data justify the full approval of a Covid-19 vaccine?
It seems like most of his criticisms are around the efficacy of the vaccine past 6 months? Even if the vaccine only grants up to 6 months of protection, why would that be an argument not to approve it? If anything, it sounds like we should approve it an encourage booster shots every 6 months.
cowvin··on Reuters photographer was killed after being left behind in retreat
"bodies in big rigs in NYC -- they were shown to highlight the need for social distancing, masking, induce a sense of panic etc among the public - something that the media and party was game to."

So you recognize that this was intended to help save further lives but you're unhappy about it?

"the bodies in elderly homes - a political decision (there were alternatives to sending infected seniors back into these homes), and the media hid it, ostensibly to protect their masters."

Who are these masters of the media that were somehow protecting themselves by not covering bodies in elderly homes? Are they the owners of the elderly homes who don't want to get sued into oblivion?

cowvin··on My mouse driver is asking for a firewall exemption (2019)
Optimizing hot paths is already done via PGO (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profile-guided_optimization).
cowvin··on YIsrael, Once the Model for Beating Covid, Faces New Surge of Infections
It sounds to me like they're saying that if you got vaccinated early on, the vaccine may be less effective at this point so you have an increased risk of severe disease. Most likely they are comparing with recently vaccinated people.
cowvin··on Homa, a transport protocol to replace TCP for low-latency RPC in data centers
"do you love me?"
cowvin··on Ask HN: What's Wrong with Penny Pinching?
The classic example of a rich guy who penny pinches is Warren Buffet. He famously still used coupons to buy food from McDonalds (source: https://www.cnbc.com/2017/02/17/warren-buffett-once-paid-for...).
cowvin··on Is all software critical software? This guy makes the argument that it is
i don't know about "all software" but definitely the majority of stuff people use these days. definitely anything capable of communicating via internet should be viewed as critical.
cowvin··on Tether minted most USDT to just 2 firms – Alameda and Cumberland
Holy cow, they literally say that they reserve the right to never give you a dollar for a tether and people still trust it?
cowvin··on Tether minted most USDT to just 2 firms – Alameda and Cumberland
Actually, that got me curious. Couldn't a billionaire crush tether by shorting so much of it that it exceeded the cash reserves?
cowvin··on Combatting online racist abuse: an update following the Euros
Why do you see diversity and inclusion as a "mission to make everything advertiser friendly?"

Also, what was this "dangerous censorship on the matter of Covid?"

cowvin··on Microbenchmarking is hard: how an innocent printf caused a drastic slowdown
Wow, that's a subtlety I had never considered. Interesting find!
