courseofaction··on Constitutional Right to Be a Pirate
I suspect that what rules apply to space habitats will depend on who's got the power to make and enforce those rules at the time it becomes relevant.

Besides, if the President declares that you must as an official act, alas you must or face the unmitigated consequences (according to recent rulings).

courseofaction··on Why going to sleep during the 'golden hour' could save your life
The 'golden hour' is already a term to describe the first and last hour of sunlight in a day, a favorite of photographers.

Popups kicked in before I could read more, but this is a different, unrelated, misnamed 'golden hour'.

Really interesting. Could the potentially controversial content of the target news article have an effect on ChatGPT's ability to summarize it?
courseofaction··on Microsoft CEO of AI Your online content is 'freeware' fodder for training models
There are no rules. This is an everyone be damned land grab with every imperialistic instinct justifying itself with bullshit.

Read a history book.

courseofaction··on Microsoft CEO of AI Your online content is 'freeware' fodder for training models
Bullshit. The cost of not participating in the short term is high.
courseofaction··on Microsoft CEO of AI Your online content is 'freeware' fodder for training models
See this in the context of corporate and governmental greed aligning into the impoverishment of the masses. This is part of a general movement towards wealth concentration, and war is the next step.
courseofaction··on Microsoft CEO of AI Your online content is 'freeware' fodder for training models
When the short term cost of non-participation is far, far higher than the long term cost for the individual, is the ToS anything less than coercive? If you don't use github on principle, you're fucked.

We need the public square back, we need it conceptualised as such. The death of twitter was horrifying, apparently you can just BUY it.

Excuse my passionate language, but fuck these predators.

courseofaction··on Microsoft CEO of AI Your online content is 'freeware' fodder for training models
This is the leading edge of a conversation about the 'data' we emit moment to moment, digital and otherwise, and the right of powerful players to incorporate that into models which will definitely be used against us.

The social contract has never been sacrosanct, it's enforced through social consequences. These companies don't feel social consequences, individuals making these psychopathic decisions are socially rewarded by their peers and allies, and financially rewarded in turn. Money is a flow of power, not of value. Especially post Bretton-Woods.

courseofaction··on In AI we trust, part II: Wherein AI adjudicates every Supreme Court case
We can have perfect insight into the bias of the LLM, but we can't have perfect insight into the bias of a human.

An LLM's judgements can be verified as consistent with past judgements, or other criteria. A judge's cannot.

The bias can be quantified in advance of making actual rulings.

courseofaction··on ICC prosecutor seeks arrest warrants against Sinwar and Netanyahu for war crimes
This is a fairly charged analogy which plays into the presentation of the sides and not the facts.

What if it turns out the Wealthy Businessman has been steadily murdering and Drug Addict's family, taking their land, and forcing them into such distress that they become addicted to a simple chemical escape?

courseofaction··on Apple's iPhone Spyware Problem Is Getting Worse
Devil's advocate: User data is now more valuable than user consent or user trust, seeing as consumers are locked in to a few brands and AI is the way of the future.

I find it especially difficult to believe that Google has any moral qualms about extracting every bit of data possible.

I'm not saying they are, I'm saying it's based on trust and that trust has been broken.

Everyone has slowly been trying to be the boeing of everything for 50 years now and we're starting to feel it.
courseofaction··on Apple users are being locked out of their Apple IDs with no explanation
These corporations are actively hostile to users and it's insane that anyone trusts or interacts with them.

Recently when setting up GrapheneOS (android OS distro), my login to google play services was delayed by 24 hours for 'security concerns', after authenticating via youtube app. (Try to go OSS? Here's a 24 hour ban).

It's funny because the forced youtube app authentication itself is not a security measure, it's a dark pattern to force the youtube app to be installed and opened. Logging in by phone or email quietly doesn't work anymore, the SSO messages never reach their destination. I find it hard to believe that this is not representative of google's perverse incentives.

Consistently disgusting, rapacious company.

Who cares, listen to what he says.

38:30 Zuckerberg states that they won't release models once they're sufficiently powerful.

It's OpenAI again, facebook has burnt all customer trust for years and the fact they changed their name to "Meta" actually worked.

courseofaction··on Meta Llama 3
This is the organization that wouldn't moderate facebook during Myanmarr yeah? The one with all the mental health research they ignore?

Zuckerberg states during the interview that once the ai reaches a certain level of capability they will stop releasing weights - i.e. they are going the "OpenAI" route: this is just trying to get ahead of the competition, it's a sound strategy when you're behind to leverage open source.

I see no reason to be optimistic about this organization, the open source community should use this an abandon them ASAP.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eichmann_in_Jerusalem - The banality of evil, evil requires people to 'just do their jobs'.

The thing is, if you were a palestinian male you would likely be bombed in your home with your family once you got there. I'd be pretty pissed off about that too, and feel obliged to inform the people working on the system that killed you that they are doing some plainly evil shit.

courseofaction··on I spoke with a Google worker fired for protesting $1.2B Israel contract
You're right, I'm confident in my analysis that this is genocide but it's an emotional and difficult argument.

Rather than get bogged in semantics, I'll settle for ethnic cleansing and argue from there: Israel has systematically displaced Palestinians with their own population for decades against international law. Israel has placed civilians in a conflict zone to occupy land.

This is not a controversial set of facts and I encourage you to follow it up. Israel is absolutely breaking international law: https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2024/03/un-human-rig... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_settlement

Israel has used civilians for military objectives in occupied land. The civilians comprise part of Israel's hostile, occupying force against the owners of the land, no?

The narrative that Hamas attacked simple peaceloving people and deserves to be crushed mercilessly is an oversimplification which ignores all context.

Despite insightful sounding statements like yours, there's nothing added to the conversation by saying 'its complicated'. You muddy the mud.
