courgette··on Ask HN: What career would you switch into if AI ate your profession?
Exactly, we like to jokes that it was set us apart from the barbarian.

A lot of excellent memory are associated with bakery. Late at night / super early. Bringing croissant to a new girl that spend the night. Tea with grandma…. You name it.

And joke aside, in France a village goes to another category when the last boulangerie close.

Their is bread in the US, you find good bakery. But the posh and exclusive aspect of it ruins it for me. I’m not driving 15min to buy a 4$ baguettes.

And yes. It’s a taxing job. You are out of synch with normal people. Right now baker are suffering greatly from increased energy prices. I hope we put them on full life support of cash if needed. That’s worth it.

I gate how right and to the point you are. I should ask GPT3 to make a haiku about it.

I have no connection with the MTG article. But I do keep in mind the “any effort like this” bit. Your account name is memorable enough.
courgette··on Magic the Gathering players lament the loss of 30-year history
Well, I take papers note, like our forefather had plan for us. And then I spend the session scribbling on it. It’s actually nice little artifact of long evening with friends
courgette··on Ask HN: What career would you switch into if AI ate your profession?
That theory is floating around on HN since a few month. I find it appealing, to an extend.

Even if AI wrote most of the code, who check for completeness and is on prod support ?

I’m not 100% convinced that legal grunt work translate to software grunt work ( I don’t know about real engineering)

It may, but 20 years in that industry make me think that a legal PDF compiling jurisprudence is easier to “maintain” than any sizeable system.

That being said : it the AI output perfect, flawless and 100% up services, you don’t need human to know how the sausage is made. ( until it broke )

Question for you : what is engineering grunt work ? I’m not sure where I stand at this point. Working in giant structure make you feel like a cog, but I’m far removed from my earlier year problematic.

courgette··on Magic the Gathering players lament the loss of 30-year history
Oh that definitely what happened and I’m not even mad. That’s on me. Keep your own shit if you care enough.

To come back to the discussion at hand…maybe someone who care should have back to article up?

A webscrapper and a zip, then torrenting it.

courgette··on Magic the Gathering players lament the loss of 30-year history
I agree, but also : apparently that content is still accessible on IA, under the older link scheme.

If it’s that important, someone should scrap that, zip it and put it on a tracker.

courgette··on Magic the Gathering players lament the loss of 30-year history
Oh. So it’s not lost then. If it’s that important, someone should dump them and store them somewhere else.

I don’t think we can expect corporations to maintain stuff for free for us forever.

They are gonna fuck it up at some point, if not now. In 50 years when hasbro and all its asset is buy by a agricultural tractor manufacturing company with no website and who don’t know what MTG is.

courgette··on Magic the Gathering players lament the loss of 30-year history
Excellent point, I seen in the article some regret about the non availability on the way back machine.

At some point information worth preserving must be preserved by people who care about it and understand it.

We can’t trust random corporations to do that on the “real” long run. Hasbro will be bought by something else, and that might be a company that don’t give a damn about MTG.

I’ve played a lot of MTG and I know the community sonehow. I’m surprised that nobody has a dump of those articles.

courgette··on Magic the Gathering players lament the loss of 30-year history
Hi, I’ve been playing DND since 20 years or so. I never bought more than a few books. Other friends were buying other and we were lending them to each other. Of course we might also have used PDF from dubious sources …

But my question is : what are people paying from to WOTC ? Subscription? To what ?

Sorry, I’m sure that the WOTC website would happily tell me more but I don’t have the energy to go though a ton of marketing.

courgette··on Magic the Gathering players lament the loss of 30-year history
I have a box with some third and fourth edition decent card somewhere.

Some first edition lands, because that’s all my 15 yo ass could pay for.

Same as you m, unclear where it is.

courgette··on Ask HN: What career would you switch into if AI ate your profession?
Fair. But I would be weary of the swap also swapping the compensation down.

Not that it really matter on the long run in the context of that question

courgette··on Ask HN: What career would you switch into if AI ate your profession?
Yeah, growing up, my understanding of “the plan” that we would end up writing poetry and dance in farandoles in orchards while the machines slaves away our work.

That plan got cancelled I think.

courgette··on Ask HN: What career would you switch into if AI ate your profession?
Gasoline engine or Electric Vehicule?
courgette··on Ask HN: What career would you switch into if AI ate your profession?
Please do, the US has such a lack of patisseries and boulangeries ( sorry to assume your position )
courgette··on Ask HN: Those making $0/month or less on side projects – Show and tell
Look nice. Can someone with a dumb phone and internet on a computer use it ?
courgette··on Ask HN: Those making $0/month or less on side projects – Show and tell
I have an existing Django side project. Very simple app, but cool data. The usage is mostly querying the data in the Django admin and generating some reports.

Very little custom code. Do you think I could realistically migrate and get something out of apibakery?

courgette··on The Starter House Is Nearly Extinct (2022)
Why does that have to be a question for every semi hard topic? The US have to choose, are you a federation of states. EU style, or a country?

I had a actual country in mind, where tax are collected on a national level. ( note my use of national, not federal )

I get your question and it’s a valid one. Sorry to be grumpy.

I’m just tired of “state” being a constant push back to every single topic. I think it was a powerful idea to quickly implement the take over of the continent, but the usefulness might start to stretch.

courgette··on The Starter House Is Nearly Extinct (2022)
yah. I think you'r sadly right. Not sure what the answers to your point is beside some unpleasant time.
courgette··on The Starter House Is Nearly Extinct (2022)
We all love to make fun of US citizen. It's an endless source of entertainment, but zoning restriction make sense to me?

But maybe because I never lived on the west coast? Is zoning restriction a poorly use tool there?

courgette··on The Starter House Is Nearly Extinct (2022)
And the answer to that answer is inheritance taxes and redistribution.
courgette··on The Starter House Is Nearly Extinct (2022)
Nobody being?

Some people are all about that.

I'm a ( relatively new ) US citizen and I'm all about that type of taxes. I've seen what taxes can do in other part of the word, and that my go-to solution for all issue in this country. Redistribution.

Pretty sure my enthusiasm will be tempered with time :)

More seriously, highly touristy place impacted by AirBB landlord snatching the whole housing market would be receptive, too.

courgette··on The Starter House Is Nearly Extinct (2022)
I've seen countries where that is implemented, having a second home trigger a new set of properties taxes. it's often dubbed "vacation home taxes", it affects any second, third or N property you own after the first one
courgette··on Coinbase’s chief product officer will leave with a $105M payday
I would like it to stay afloat till the summer, then vacation, then finding a real job.

Edit : it’s not fair, we do work. Like a real job, but it feels … ethereal

courgette··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
Taxes can varies from counties to counties? Ha, I never noticed that.

Kinda goes to show that it's not helping to display them like that.

courgette··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
What do you mean "$150-$300", net, a day ? Yah. No.

You checked for France on the statistical bureau website ( INSEE )

Average Net salary is 1558 euros / month, calculated from 196k salaries. Figures are from 2021.

With that you get unemployment, retirement and healthcare. It can be considered "play money" if you are sorta careless.

Not great, but you can definitely lives on that and find lodging. ( In Paris that will be a flatshare )

courgette··on MacBooks from 2020 Are Being Sold for Scrap Because of Activation Lock
Oh yeah. Sorry I did not realized we were talking specifically about M1. In 2020 M1 already existed?

Previous models also have a T2 chip.

courgette··on MacBooks from 2020 Are Being Sold for Scrap Because of Activation Lock
It's a bummer, I could have keep using it as a media platform or a plain functional laptop without root if I had knew that before hand.

I had my account on this. I formatted and that when I saw that I will not be able to re-install anything that I realized I bricked a perfectly fine machine.

Oh well.

courgette··on MacBooks from 2020 Are Being Sold for Scrap Because of Activation Lock
Their is a hardware chip that will force you to prove ownership by logging into a ICloud account.

I "own" one of those. My previous employers never asked me for the laptop back. Even after I send them email about providing me with a fedex label. It was roughtly 2 years ago.

I thought that a good old format would take care of that, but no.

I did saw T2 removal tutorial on youtube thought. You need to remove the T2 chip , implant a new one and flash it.

I'm kinda disappointed on HN to not provide more information on that process.
