cosmiccatnap··on We don’t use a staging environment
This is currently how my job works and it's hell.
cosmiccatnap··on Rocky Linux Project Shifts Focus to Rocky GNU/Hurd
I'll be back on here tomorrow, this shit is going to give me a stroke.
cosmiccatnap··on The Delusions of Debian
Another hot piece on systemd basically from someone who does this more as an evengelical hobby than a 9 to 5
cosmiccatnap··on Hard to work with
One of the hardest things for me is walking away from a solution I know is right. It's hard to realize that you will have to deal with a less than ideal solution because of internal politics but at the end of the day it's not worth it. Go home to your family and work on projects you enjoy and when work makes you write slop give it to em just as sloppy as they want it. Hopefully you work at a company where you don't know what in talking about but many of you in sure know exactly what solution you went to bat for and the various irrational reasons it never got built and to those of you out there I sympathize.
cosmiccatnap··on I don't like computers (2016)
I feel this hard.

There is a difference in having fun with computers and getting a paycheck for computers and sadly the things you have to do to a computer to get the paycheck is often times a sin against many of the high minded ideas the 90s brought forth.

Let he who has not fudged a react component or lazily copied and pasted a function cast the first keyboard. As for me I find that my free time is much more filling when it doesn't involve a computer and while that's sad it should at least be understandable given the state of the industry and the nature of growing old.

cosmiccatnap··on Debian decides to allow secret votes
I think this is a great idea. Can't tell you how many times a very poor solution was implemented because a single person would flip out if you tried to ask them about alternatives because it was "their baby"

This at least let's those people know they are in the minority without people feeling like they might get blacklash.

cosmiccatnap··on The Reality War – It’s just Gnostics all the way down
Seems to make the same simplistic flaws in thinking that it tried to pin on humans, as though the person writing this was some "other"

Reality for all practical purposes is easily verifiable and if you can't live in a world where decisions are based on empirical data then who cares about a high minded theological debate.

The reason the earth will soon not be sustainable is primarily because people are not worried about this life because they believe there will be a better one when they die. The honest reason for that is because it's an easier way to think than reality.

cosmiccatnap··on How to stop running out of ephemeral ports and love long-lived connections
This article is written as though Linux isn't an open source OS. Basically every big player rolls their own kernel to get features they want. This use case here is pretty exotic and for 99% of people using Linux it's perfectly fine for their needs.
cosmiccatnap··on Donate to Signal
It's often times not worth it. They are like 20 core developers and alot of them have day jobs, they are not a manufacturing company and the price to have this stuff made by a third party often doesn't make it worth the cost after accounting for taxes.
cosmiccatnap··on Indian iPhone factory apologizes to workers for mishandling wages
They never thought the lepard would eat their face.
cosmiccatnap··on UK and EU agree Brexit trade deal
Four years ago the various members of the UK parliament voted on wether or not to stick their genitalia into an electric switch. After 4 years of debate between the half that wanted it and the half that did not they have come to the conclusion that they should just pretend to do so in order to make the various people they represent believe that their best course of action is to once again bear the blunt of the pain for a stupid decision some politicians made.

Soon many UK citizans will be quite shocked to find out that this might not have been the best idea for them and it won't really effect those who ask them to go through with it to begin with.

cosmiccatnap··on Spotify Employee Accused of Deleting Joe Rogan’s Alex Jones Interview

cosmiccatnap··on Charles Koch Says His Partisanship Was a Mistake
When you ask yourself how the system is rigged this bad and why congress is so bought out and each policy a carefully chosen business strategy instead of in the interest of average citizens you don't have to look further than the excellent example of the koch brothers who, in their infinite desire for infinite profits, have rigged the legislature and executive branches to use as a crowbar on the wallets and rainy day funds of everyone.
cosmiccatnap··on Unofficial ballot drop boxes worry California elections officials
The problem though is that they are claiming it as official which it is not. It's also easy to see how a few ethic names might get lost in this process...
cosmiccatnap··on PostgreSQL is the worlds’ best database
You do realize you are the one getting emotional because you are clinging to an engine that consistently underperforms in benchmarks across the board and costs you a fortune right?

Hope the job security is worth being an expert in a bunch of defunkt practices in 10 years nobody will want.

cosmiccatnap··on PostgreSQL is the worlds’ best database
It's missing the part at the end that says "for general use" Plenty of noSQL and even MySQL/mariaDB features beat psql in the right problem space.
cosmiccatnap··on Most-recommended programming books
Most-recommended programming books is very misleading. This is a list of software development lifecycle management books.
cosmiccatnap··on Apache Kafka: Life after the honeymoon period
I'm not sure your inability to implement Kafka correctly because you didn't want to go through the proper channels is exactly a good reason to kickstart a new project around it...you just have to design your system to use it for what makes sense and deal with what doesn't. Putting PPI into it is madness.
cosmiccatnap··on Open access to ACM Digital Library during coronavirus pandemic
I don't see anything for III
cosmiccatnap··on How does Monzo keep 1,600 microservices spinning? Go, clean code, strong team
There are two ways to make system. One is so simple that there are obviously no issues and the other is so complicated that there are no obvious issues. The former being much harder.
cosmiccatnap··on Ask HN: How would you improve this bash oneliner for deleting tweets?
Make it delete the account instead.
cosmiccatnap··on Billionaires Want People Back to Work. Employees Aren’t So Sure
Having no kids, I can say I've got more done in less time in the last two weeks than any other two week period in the last two years...
cosmiccatnap··on U.S. retailers plan to stop paying rent to offset virus closures
No, huge tax cuts and cutting regulations that prevent sub prime loans that leave the government incapable of handling a crisis is what causes Banks to fail...
cosmiccatnap··on GameStop: We Can Stay Open During Lockdowns Because We're 'Essential Retail'
The fact that you just won't admit you might not have thought this through says more about your openions validity than anything else.
cosmiccatnap··on ISH: An Alpine Linux Shell on iOS
Now if only you could just install Linux directly to your laptop you wouldn't need a Mac at all
cosmiccatnap··on Whiteboard exercises are a terrible way to investigate coding ability (2012)
I'm a much bigger fan of telling someone they have 24h to build me a toy deliverable to test how well they can work under pressure and scrape code together. That gives you a better understanding of how well they can do that on the spot just make sure to have then walk through the code the next day so you know they actually wrote it
cosmiccatnap··on Mac mini
You are fortunate. That being said I've never had any issues with Linux myself so why take the risk if all you get in return is a bubbly GUI and some bloatware
cosmiccatnap··on Company threatens to sue volunteers who 3D-printed valves for coronavirus aid
Considering your company probably makes them for <5k I'd say it's sad all around
cosmiccatnap··on How Long Will macOS Be Unix?
At no point in my life has it ever been hard or regretable to install Linux on anything. I hear talk about trackpads and Bluetooth not working, but I've never experienced this at all. Maybe it's because I use i3 and vim but it just seems like if you want a development environment what more do you need besides a working terminal and a robust package manager which every distro has out of the box. Mac has always just seemed like a gimmick to me and after getting one at work I just find that at best it feels like a bloated freeBSD. If I wanted Unix there are plenty of superior alternatives and if I want to get work done I install Linux.
cosmiccatnap··on How Long Will macOS Be Unix?
...I've heard this alot but I run arch and have not once had an issue with power management. Maybe try gnome instead of unity or try kde if you like the Mac feel
