cortic··on Feds seized $311M in Bitcoin, then hacker stole it back
So when i read that a suspect was seized by police; They might have just recovered a picture of the person..? But then the real person can't change addresses as they would be charged with escaping from police custody..

Doesn't seem right.

cortic··on Homemade Heat Pump Manifesto (2009)
I would just like to estimate that >99% of threads older than 10 years have useful information and the potential for useful discussion.

I realize that where i am enthusiastic about older things, cars/bikes/tech/languages, you probably like new stuff. I hope you realize that most of the zombie revivalists agree with me. Most of the time we are looking for a new solution to an old problem, which is the definition of progress. Locking threads after 6 months (thanks Reddit) or berating someone who want to revive an old topic, cripples progress.

cortic··on Show HN: I may have created a new type of puzzle
Just a static image, no animals or anything to click on, tried on Chrome 83 (no add-ons) and FF 88 (uBlock, disabled).
cortic··on Privacy vs. “I have nothing to hide” (2019)
I don't mind, help yourself.
cortic··on Privacy vs. “I have nothing to hide” (2019)
I suppose my pointing out the obvious, isn't that obvious to people. But it strikes me as a crazy blind spot; Every serial killer, rapist, child abuser, blackmailer and swindler - had a job, in IT, in civil service, many more recently in the police force. We are bombarded with a steady stream of examples. How can people maintain a Disney princess belief in strangers, so long as they are employed?
cortic··on Privacy vs. “I have nothing to hide” (2019)
Posted this two years and five months ago, but its still relevant: My nothing to hide argument;

Nothing to hide is an incomplete sentence. Nothing to hide from who? surely you want to hide your children from abusers and predators? Don't you want to hide your banking details from con artists and fraudsters? Your identity from identity thieves.. Your location from burglars, your car keys from car thieves or your blood type from rich mobsters with kidney problems..

we don't know who are any of these things. So we should protect ourselves from all of them, in effect we have everything to hide from someone, and no idea who someone is.

edit; let me just add the obvious, that the government and police, Google and Facebook, are made up of many someones.

cortic··on The link between personality and success (2021)
..just step forward, and if your in a higher place..

I know you think you are saying something different but to me you just sound like a blind guy on a mountain.

I'm not trying to convince people to give up, just don't kill yourself because you are not on top of a mountain, it had very little to do with you.

cortic··on The link between personality and success (2021)
I never read these 'how to be successful' articles or studies, whenever i do i always have the same story pop into my head and they always line up with it to a large extent;

Imagine some people on some open landscape, blindfolded and all following the same rules; Pick a direction, step forward, if higher stay and repeat, if lower step back and try again. After a time most people will be stuck on small hills, a very select few will be on mountains.

Ask the people on mountains, how they did it? They give us this inspirational speech which consisted of some variation of "I Picked a direction, stepped forward, if higher I'd stay and repeat, if lower I'd step back and try again" And all the people around hearing this seem motivated to move that much faster, on and off their little mounds.

cortic··on Rules; Reverence for Religion
Why can't i just be Jewish for ten minutes to get some ice cream? I can't think of a reason that is not also antisemitic.

Motivation; We don't tell Jews they can only be Jewish if they have a reason we approve of. Time; no matter where you put the line, from a minute to generations, it would be intensely antisemitic to actually measure this and tell some subset of Jews they are not proper Jews.

Synagogue attendance, circumcision, bloodline, race, all of these would be antisemitic some prejudice to actually test for or require.

I'm left with the authors suggestion that the answer lies in the 'spirit of the law'. Which is just a nice way of saying 'what i think other people thought one time'. And about as subjective as it gets.

cortic··on US Government Bans Export of Nvidia A100 and H100 GPUs to China and Russia
I expect there is a real answer and a PR answer to this question; The PR answer has something to do with missile guidance and crypto currency. But the real answer i fear is that limiting import/export allows wars to start more easily.
cortic··on What’s going on with security at PayPal?
0.3/0.2% caps are for customers accounts (and don't cover missed payments which can be punitively charged). merchant fees can still be very high, and silently passed on to customers. The fact that the law obfuscates what the CC companies are actually getting from a transaction should worry us, as they can sneak merchant fees up each year without push-back from the general public.
cortic··on What’s going on with security at PayPal?
Actually its not allowed to tell the customer about additional fees for using credit cards. The fees are still applied to the merchant, the law just forces the merchant to recoup the fees from all their customers. So in the EU, you are paying credit card fees even when not using a credit card.

And i have witnessed many examples in the EU where a person had money transferred from their bank account and the banks could not reverse it.

cortic··on Tell HN: Godaddy canceled my domain, gave me 2h to respond, then charged €150
>It's usual for them to have ask for video proof that you're the domain owner.

Putting aside the fact that it is just an insecure and undignified way of transferring data. Why not host the 'video proof' site on namecheap domain? so you know who's watching. And why not ask for photo ID instead of credit card? I mean anyone can send an email "go to [whatever] domain and show me your credit card, or I'll stop your [whatever] service" and NameCheap users will be conditioned into falling for this scam. Its reckless and unprofessional.

And i don't know how else to define took some of my money and registered a domain.. then kept it cause that's what happened. You have a deadline to do your cam show, which is shorter than the time their support service takes to answer an email about your concerns; After that you lose some of your money and your domain.

cortic··on Why do arrays start at 0?
Its an absolute pain in my arse, i honestly don't know what problems i would have with an array system that started at 1, but since the length method sometimes starts at 0 and sometimes 1, (I'm thinking Perl vs JS) I'm always forgetting whether to put = or <= into for loops and when to add one for the read out or subtract 1 when looking at the array again. I mean in what universe should [2]+[3]=7?
cortic··on Tell HN: Godaddy canceled my domain, gave me 2h to respond, then charged €150
Had a horrendous experience with NameCheap where they basically stole my domain and some of my money after freezing my account and insisting i do a cam show with my credit card on some random site (not their domain) that had privacy guard up.. They are also not so 'cheap' any more. I'm using NameSilo and PorkBun, so far not bad.
cortic··on Cancer in the Cold
The inverse might actually be true, colder climate people tend to over-heat their houses and over-dress for cold making their core temperature on average warmer. Where as hotter climate people tend to under-dress and over cool their house with air conditioning making their core temperature on average cooler.
cortic··on UK intelligence recycles “think of the children” argument for borking encryption
In every example from Savile to Rochdale There were years or decades of kids coming forward and being ignored by police or branded troublemakers. Officials in public and private sector suppressing stories for various reasons. And in many cases, officers themselves being involved in abuse.

You don't fix these problems with people in various positions of power, by handing them more power. The GCHQ have a long history of infiltrating trade unions and protest groups; I very much doubt their motives.

cortic··on Record-setting quantum entanglement connects two atoms across 20 miles
Okay, so how do we know that A wasn't like that all along?

edit; Been trying to read up on this, i think i get it; Its a random outcome whether B has been looked at or not, but when you check them later, they are opposite pairs randomly distributed.

cortic··on Record-setting quantum entanglement connects two atoms across 20 miles
correction; If no, then how do we know A changed at all (when we observe B)?
cortic··on Record-setting quantum entanglement connects two atoms across 20 miles
If A and B are entangled, and you observe B, would there be any way of knowing B was observed from observing A?

If yes, that's binary communication. If no, then how do we know B changed at all?

cortic··on Notepad++ v8.4.3: Unhappy Users' Edition
"don't complain that a worthless product is worthless" however sarcastically put, is not a very compelling retort. Because its not worthless, should not have ambition to be worthless, and is an expensive time sink for people who don't ultimately get use out of it.

I've settled on a portable version of Notepad++ 8.3.3. after spending months trying everything from sublime to atom. I wish for so many things, none of the editors available today are customizable enough to fit my work flow.

cortic··on Absurd Trolley Problems
I was responding to someone who was generalizing, its not in any way pedantic to put a generalization to the test.

I'm also quite surprised that someone could imply overthinking as a negative on HN. Gaining a deeper understanding of something, even modern philosophy, is intellectually useful. You should not under-think things, it does you a disservice to skip over the flaws and paradoxes in the world.

cortic··on Absurd Trolley Problems
> [I] would easily break the law in order to sacrifice one person in trade for five people.

This is a quite disturbing statement. So many psychopathic examples; If you were a doctor would you randomly kill healthy people with compatible organs to multiple patients? Or a researcher inflicting gruesome deaths to thousands of innocent healthy people to save millions later...

In fact we could simplify your statement further; The ends always justify the means., and so endorsing all terrorism and war, even genocide; whenever the ends is enough peace to make a net positive.

cortic··on Life is not short
In my thirties i regret not working more in my twenties, and in my forties i regret not working more in my thirties.

However upon introspection, i realize that this regret is always based on not wanting to work more now.

edit; to quote "The Idler" from the RT-11 operation system kernel source code (and my new favorite quote).."To be idle is the ultimate purpose of the busy"

cortic··on They Think It's Murder
If you really want to convince pro-life people that you don't think ending the life of a 27 week old fetus is murder; Allow it. Legalize infanticide under (28? 30?) weeks from conception.
cortic··on Consciousness is not computation
I thought it was pretty well established that consciousness is a kind of illusion; That we evolved the ability to extrapolate persona in others which was/is useful to predict future actions and form bonds. Consciousness is just this ability turned inward.

I've seen a lot of evidence for this over the year from neurologists, psychologists etc. Am i wrong, or is this a 'mystery' until we get an answer we like?

cortic··on Why does science news suck so much?
like to add;

11. Don't conflate correlation with causation.

cortic··on Probiotics can support the effect of antidepressants
There is a risk here we are not talking about; Some significant number of people die every year trying low risk solutions to high risk problems, while not being qualified to judge risk.

Probiotics, tinctures, vitamins and a gluten free diet basically killed a friends mother who spent years on these things while her undiagnosed stomach cancer spread everywhere.

The issue as i see it, is that there is profit to be made stringing people along from one 'cheap and harmless shot in the dark' to the next.

cortic··on The giraffe neck evolved for sexual combat?
Its useful to think about natural selection like the R value for a virus. A gene + environment has an R value (like a virus + its environment. e.g. masks, geography, etc), if this value is higher than 1 it will, over time spread into the gene pool, and under 1 it will die out of the gene pool.

If you think a gene proliferated into the gene pool just because, your still saying its R is 1+, only that the environment played a larger part than the gene.. which is probably always the case anyway.

cortic··on The Copenhagen Interpretation of Ethics (2015)
Good enough is also the enemy of better. Feels like you are getting caught up in some version of the repugnant conclusion.
