coreyja··on Facebook Releases Data, Including All National Security Requests
I may be part of the minority here, but I have/see no reason to believe the Facebook is lying about these numbers, or lying about the fact they actually check every request, and don't have a NSA backdoor. If I am correct, they only thing that shows Facebook has given the NSA/government agency access to their servers is a leaked PowerPoint presentation. I believe it is more than likely that one of the following two options is true. (1) The PowerPoint is just wrong, and was made it up someone working for a government contractor. (2) The PowerPoint is inaccurate in that these corporations have complied with the government, when asked to and required by law too, through the use of warrants, both secret and otherwise.

Personally I think option 2 is the most likely scenario. Facebook (and Google and most of the other named corporations) have done nothing to lose my trust in them. The only party that at this time, I know is to blame is the NSA/government for conducting a cloaked surveillance operation on the entire US population. Until there is proof, or a reasonable argument, showing that these corporations willingly complies with the NSA and were a part of PRISM, I don't think they have lost any substantial part of my trust.

coreyja··on Everything I Know about Self-Publishing
And I'm getting a server error. "Oops! A server error occured. It's been logged."
coreyja··on FISA Court Rejects Catch-22 Secrecy Argument in FOIA Case
I believe the decision was know as in we know that they ruled some parts of the law were unconstitutional. But if I understand correctly, it wasn't released what parts of the law were unconstitutional or why they were unconstitutional. This was for public disclosure of that information.
coreyja··on Warrant Canary
I feel for something like this to have a chance of holding up in court, the company would have to be less up front about the purpose of it. rsync tells the user that if they miss a day, or it stops getting updated, then something is wrong. I think without statements like that, and calling it canary.txt, they would stand a better chance of holding this up in court.

That's just my opinion though.

coreyja··on Warrant Canary
Lol so am I that's why I wanted to clarify. Thanks for clearing that up
coreyja··on Warrant Canary
The chart of page 15 of the document you linked says a 50 USC 436 covers "all financial information relating to consenting, identified employee" but wasn't it used to obtain customer information from Verizon? What am I missing here? Is what the document is describing just one possible use case?

Edit: typo

coreyja··on Snapchat, You've Made a Huge Mistake
Pretty positive all the apps like this were either just random data or fake. I could be wrong, but I believe that none of these apps ever actually worked
coreyja··on “Right click and save as” needs to go away
That's cause you aren't actually looking at a PDF, most likely. If you are actually looking at a PDF in Chrome's renderer you will definitely be able to save it.
coreyja··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2013)
Hey I am interested in your internships. I currently do mostly front-end web stuff, and use Django mostly. I also have some experience with mobile apps. I would definitely be interested in talking to you guys. Send me an email at coreyja@gmail.com of you want to talk. Thanks
coreyja··on Ask HN: Do I need College?
Ok so as a student who never thought going to college wasn't an option, until about Freshman year of High School I never thought about the fact that some kids didn't go to college.

So I am now a Sophomore in college studying Computer Science, and I whole heatedly think that you can do perfectly fine in the software industry without a degree. I haven't taken any classes that I feel like made me a better programmer. I learned some interesting things and got to spend a semester hacking Lisp but that won't really be what I ever do in a job, so not too beneficial.

With all that said, I wouldn't even consider not going to college. I don't really care that much about getting my degree, obviously I will get it (or in fact a few majors) but that's not why I would recommend college. If you are only contemplating going to a CC then it might be different, but the experiences and fun that I have at school I wouldn't trade for anything. I'd pay the $40k a year to just hang out for four years of my life and have a great time, regardless of whether I was getting an education.

The friends I have made and the confidence I have gained simply by being at shcool and interacting with friends and people on a constant basis are the reasons I love going back to school.

I have a friend who asks me why I don't want to graduate early, I have the credits where I could, and it's simply because college is the most fun I've ever had and I don't know why you would want to give that up.

So that's my opinion, if you can go to a Four Year college and have that experience I think you should jump on the oppurtunity

coreyja··on A job at Joel's company doesn't pass the "Joel Test"
I agree. Also, I don't know if I would consider a 12/12 the only way to "pass," if you want to think about it that way. A 10/12 is a pretty good score, but I think it is more about the transparency and knowing what the job offers and what it doesn't.
coreyja··on Ask HN: Who's looking for employment?
Hey I'm Corey Alexander. I am a Sophmore, Computer Science, Software Engineering and Mathematics triple major at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.

I am looking for a summer internship in a programming field. I have experience working with web technologies as well and Android development but can learn quick and am open to trying anything. I would be willing to work and live in basically any city in the US but some of my favorites would be the Bay Area, New York, Boston or Chicago!

email me at coreyja at gmail.com if you want to talk to me. Thanks everybody!

coreyja··on Show HN: New way to search for used cars (my weekend project)
Thats cause thats how they are classified on cars.com. Can't blame the developer. He scrapped the data correctly just some smart ass marketing guy who put up the ads cheated...
coreyja··on Show HN: New way to search for used cars (my weekend project)
This is what I got when I tried in Safari 5.05 under Snow Leopard. Not sure if it helps since you can't test but here ya go. Also shows the errors I got in the error log console.

Actually the 'most bang-for-the-buck' on his graph is the lower left corner not the upper left.

I agree that it is kinda strange at first but once I realized it, it wasn't that bad.

coreyja··on Ask HN: Double Major CS/Math or Single CS Major?
I believe that I will have a strong enough background in math just with the CS curriculum that my school offers and the double major was really just to set me apart and in part because I enjoy math.

Do you think that your economics minor has benefited you? Are you in the software industry?

coreyja··on Ask HN: Double Major CS/Math or Single CS Major?
I think I might do a year of study abroad and I am thinking that Singapore is my first choice. I don't necessarily want to do my entire education internationally but would definitely consider doing a year or a semester.
coreyja··on Ask HN: Double Major CS/Math or Single CS Major?
Ya I had thought about doing a year abroad but realized I wouldn't be able to with doing a Double Major. I hadn't thought about how I could do a year abroad with the Single Major and not have to worry about which classes to take.

I had thought of going to Singapore as a really cool place to study abroad. Any other suggestions?

coreyja··on TrueCrypt User Held in Contempt of Court
This may have been posted below as I did not read every comment but isn't impossible to prove that the file is a TrueCrypt volume to begin with? Couldn't you just claim it was a corrupt computer file that contained random data? How can they ask you for something that they have no proof even exists? There is no proof the file is a TrueCrypt volume so there is no way to prove there is even a password to find.
