cop359··on Warren Buffett: Stop coddling the super rich
How is it a logical fallacy?

If believe A should B I am A Therefore I believe I should B.

A = rich people B = pay more taxes

cop359··on Just the Facts: S&P's $2 Trillion Mistake
No one was seriously suggesting that we never pay our debts ever again, There really was two things proposed:

One was too not raise the debt ceiling and use SS and Medicare funds to pay off the debt;

The other was to default but just for a short while so as to provide more pressure on the Democrats. If we defaulted for say a month; it would hurt a minuscule fraction of the debt holders. If it actually would hurt debt holders China would be pointing nukes at us.

So the risk that a lender would not get his money back is incredibly small. As for inflating the money away. They could come to the conclusion that that would hurt the economy more then it is worth and default on all the debt collective (like of like declaring bankruptcy). This is a possibility in the distant future.

They make tires! I understand they take up some unhealthily larger percent of the Finnish economy
cop359··on Enough Is Enough
according to wiki, Dijkstra's algorithm was published in 1959. If he had a patent on it for 15 years and made enough money to cover his troubles, then I don't really see it as a bad thing. Now a days, you might say that 15 years is too long and maybe that's true, but sometimes it takes people a very long time to monetize their ideas (due to technical problems, bad business partners, time needed to develop connections in the business etc.)
cop359··on Why astronomers (and other scientists) should program in Python
You know what's even easier to learn and more beginner friendly, has great debugging tools and is very powerful? MATLAB.

And most engineers/scientists use it. If you know MATLAB, I don't see why you would even bother going to figure out the dozens of Python libraries available.

cop359··on Mysterious US Helicopter Used in Bin Laden Raid
This brings up another good question. Can a helicopter really fly all across Pakistan and back to an aircraft carrier?

Could they even make it to Afghanistan? I was under the impression that helicopters don't exactly have a whole lot of range

cop359··on From Redmond with Love - IE team sends cake for FF4
Interesting point. However it seems like the only way to make big money on the internet is through advertisement and Google has that market locked up. Chrome is just another tool for their social data-mining. I'm sure they keep logs of what searches your IP has made (if you use Google Search), what emails you have read (if you use Gmail) and what websites you visit (through Chrome). If you sign up for any of their services then they can tie a name to an IP and then track what other computers you use (so they will know for instance that a work and home computers belong to the same person). This way they can profile people and then carefully target advertisement towards them.

So then they funny result is that the more people use them the better they get; and the better they get, the more people use them. It's a perpetual motion machine, they feed on their own sucess so it almost seems impossible to catch up with them.

So are you saying that microsoft is trying to replicate this with the Bing, IE, Live/Hotmail ? Clearly that won't be enough. They're gonna need a huge innovative breakthrough to win this battle...

cop359··on From Redmond with Love - IE team sends cake for FF4
This is a bit of a naiive question, But what is the business rational behind Microsoft putting so much time and effort into IE? Where is the payback? Is it just so more people have Bing as their default search? Is it just so that Windows ships with a working modern browser as the user expects?

If anyone could clear it up for me, Much appreciated

=)
