cooper_ganglia··on Who killed the rave?
So what happens when someone owns land, and then has a bunch of neighborhoods and developments pop up around them? I know a lot of poorer people who bought their home when the area wasn't developed, only for things to spring up around them. That would increase their land value, sure, but also their tax, and I don't think that's fair.

It feels like a way to force these people out of the towns and family homes they've grown up in, in favor of some rich guy or corporation. They can be strong-armed out by increasing their property value around them past a point they can afford the taxes.

cooper_ganglia··on Who killed the rave?
Sorry, but a "land value tax" is one of the worst political propositions I've ever heard. This is a great way to further erode the middle class, ensure that owning is always prohibitively out-of-reach for anyone born after 1980, and to promote corporate consolidation of land by BlackRock and other corporations.

I feel like announcing a new product in the same vein as your main product as an established company is almost always a bad idea. If you're going to improve your product, don't announce the improvements 6-12 months ahead of time and grow the hype to unmanageable levels, just announce a great product and tell them it's available starting today.

I think open-sourcing your tech for the common person while leaving commercial use behind a paywall or even just against terms is completely acceptable, no?
cooper_ganglia··on Trump's likely FCC chair wrote Project 2025 chapter on how he'd run the agency
>On Big Tech, Carr wants to implement Trump's 2020 plan to crack down on social media websites for alleged anti-conservative bias. At the time, Trump formally petitioned the FCC to reinterpret Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act in a way that would limit social media platforms' legal protections for hosting third-party content when the platforms take down content they consider objectionable.

I don't like the other parts, but reading this section, it's wild to me that this isn't already the case and that it's not wildly bipartisan!

Since 1950, the US has increased CO2 output by 102%. In that same time period, China has increased by 5,600%.

Since 2005, the US has decreased carbon output by 17%, and China has increased by 93%. They emit 124% more Co2 annually than the US does.

American manufacturing is not the issue when it comes to carbon emissions, China is.

cooper_ganglia··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Yes, and that's great, credit to anyone who supports American industry!

I'm looking forward to how much more manufacturing across different industries that this admin brings back to the States, too!

cooper_ganglia··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Yeah, I never believed any of the "stolen election" diatribe, but after last night, I'm actually starting to change my mind on that. I now think it's actually very possible.
cooper_ganglia··on Trump wins presidency for second time
The only choice that made any sense at all. America is about to experience it's absolute Golden Age.

2026 will be the USA's 250th anniversary, we'll put men on the moon for the first time in 50+ years, and we'll land a rocket on Mars. The Supreme Court is secured for decades, immigration reform will now be swift and bipartisan, and we're moving manufacturing back to the US, including 4nm chip manufacturing with TSMC, avoiding escalation with China on that front.

We are truly living in the best possible timeline, I'm literally so pumped and excited for the future of our country and world, and I'm ready to start building for the future!!!

cooper_ganglia··on China sanctions US drone maker Skydio
People in the US can recognize that the fighting is caused by economic reasons, and surely the average American citizen and the average Chinese citizen don't hold animosity towards each other on a personal level.

I think manufacturing jobs moving to China hurt the middle class in the US, and that's caused a disdain for China (and US politicians who push for things like that). But otherwise, I don't think the China rhetoric is too out of touch with reality. It would be very interesting to talk to someone in China and directly compare perspectives.

The lines that really got me in this post were:

> A Licensing officer may call at your property not to collect the letters but to check that you are not watching a TV.

and

>...Cas Scott has said that the letters are not sought by TVL/BBC agents who make street visits.

Like, they show up at your home and ask to physically view your TV to make sure you aren't watching TV! It's so incredibly bonkers to me, I'm laughing out loud at work at the mental image!

Never change, UK, never change.

cooper_ganglia··on Please do not write below the line
A "TV License" is one of those things I alway assumed people were making up to satirize the claims of over-regulation & bureaucracy in the UK.

Finding out it was real was a mixture of hilarious and sobering.

For me, I work 4x 10hr days, and it's the best work situation I've ever had. Having every single weekend be a 3-day weekend is something it would be very hard to move away from unless I was doubling my salary or something.

cooper_ganglia··on NASA spacecraft to probe possibility of life in Europa's salty ocean
I understand the view that life likely exists elsewhere in the universe, and I agree that, given the vast number of planets and galaxies, it's certainly a plausible idea. The sheer scale of the universe, coupled with our growing knowledge of exoplanets and extremophiles—organisms that thrive in conditions once thought inhospitable to life—makes it reasonable to think life could exist beyond Earth.

That being said, I have no logical reason to know life exists anywhere else except on this planet. I think it's important to differentiate between the likelihood of something and claiming certainty about it. While the possibility of extraterrestrial life is exciting and worth exploring, until we have direct evidence, we can't confidently say it’s out there.

In fact, we can't even answer the philosophical question, "Do other people aside from me even actually exist?" with 100% certainty. This brings us to the ironic part: sometimes, claiming we know life exists elsewhere can be a reflection of the same kind of ego that leads others to believe humanity is uniquely special in the universe. Both positions can, in a way, stem from an overestimation of our ability to know the unknowable.

I think it's great to remain curious and open to discovery, but also humble about the limits of our current knowledge. :)
