The absolutists have not thought it through. Fallibilism always wins.

Privacy & Agency Rant:

While we missed the boat on Internet tracking, there is still time to avoid sailing through the final frontier of neural tracking.

Thanks to the BCI, we will soon be offered the trade of our privacy for the convenience of password-free login and faster typing. Next, there will be a quick TSA neural scan prior to boarding.

Then, thought crime will become a literal thing. If particular thoughts are not outlawed outright, they will at least prevent you from certain activities.

> Proposed neuro-rights include the right to identity, or the ability to control both one's physical and mental integrity; the right to agency, or the freedom of thought and free will to choose one's own actions; the right to mental privacy, or the ability to keep thoughts protected against disclosure; [0]

For a great breakdown on the SOTA (2023) tech, and the long term implications, please see this podcast with full written transcript.

OK, that is a plausible argument given Dario's public positions. I have to admit that I keep cutting them some slack for standing up against automated kill chains, and domestic surveillance.
consumer451··on Logo Programming
Anyone here remember a 1980's Logo-programmable robot that I once used in a TAG program? It had a pen, we would lay it on top of a giant sheet of paper.

It was like a little futuristic tank. I searched for a minute, and I cannot find the exact model. Did I imagine this?

consumer451··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
Yeah, I saw that. I wonder if there are any other AI labs that are naive (good?) enough to admit this type of thing.

Obviously, it's happening with all decent models.

consumer451··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
Holy shit. This is really interesting. AI used to impersonate, social media to amplify, and that led to a significant tactical defeat?

I don't want to live in interesting times anymore.

consumer451··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
The first question should be: who supplies their military equipment?

The next question should be: who benefits?

consumer451··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
No, this is actual journalism. When it's from a direct single source, it's a quote, not an agreed upon fact.
consumer451··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
This is real news. They just captured a bunch of modern Saudi-supplied equipment:

consumer451··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
This article is malarkey.

Title includes "autonomous cars" - url includes "self-driving" - I smell what you are selling.

Meanwhile, the article never gives a share, but as far as I can tell, nearly all the lives are saved by basic ADAS: auto-braking, which is really cool and should be the focus.

If you want to click-bait, fine, but then at least tell the truth after the user clicks.

consumer451··on Apple Watch Series 12
As far as I can tell in 2 party states, it depends on the expectation of privacy, and even in public, your intent. In any case, here is their threading of the needle:

While I still do trust that on-device audio is safe, you can rewind and record it on another device.

The regulatory workaround is an "un-mutable" audio notification of some sort. This might be a very notable sound in the near future. I am curious what the chosen waveform might be:

consumer451··on Apple Watch Series 12
My first thought was 2-party state violations, 24/7? However, any legally-minded people want to explain how they threaded the needle on this?

I have real respect for Apple's "Private Cloud Compute" architecture [0], I am not a hater, just trying to understand.

Are these the dividends Apple is getting from doing this truly impressive work?

consumer451··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
The lowest cost is in the EU in this regard. Anti-rent-seeking regulations ain't so bad for everyone, save the rent-seekers.

BTW, I used to handle around $7M/year in credit card transaction in the USA, and if you got actual hand-written partial numbers on a signed contract, then we could avoid nearly 100% of charge backs, as we always delivered on our end. I think in 14 years, we had around 10 charge back attempts, and our merchant provider loved us. The only time I ever magically lost a charge back was to a Visa executive for ~$10k, and our merchant provider just shrugged. Whatayagonnado?

consumer451··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
Clank deeper, please. You gave us content marketing from the electronic payment industry:

"Does IHL Group have any connections to merchant providers?"

> IHL Group sells market intelligence, vendor directories, and lead generation data to the electronic payment industry.

consumer451··on AirPods 5
Man, I am the biggest curmudgeon in this regard. I wear my old wired headphones, wire under my shirt, to a BT-BA001 "low-latency BT transceiver" in my pants pocket.
consumer451··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
Yeah, that's fair. I was thinking only locally. However, I would hope they are dropping both stages somewhere relatively responsible. I guess I don't know where that is for polar orbits.
consumer451··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
I have never played, but I watched all the drama unfold on reddit. It makes me wonder, is this what happens when you have an underwhelming launch? "You only make a first impression once" - and there is a huge price to pay for that?

In SaaS and YC, it's ship early and ship often, right? Is that absolutely not the case in games? Also, how true is it in SaaS? Genuinely curious here.

consumer451··on I tested 10 model/harness combinations on the same Three.js task
Why no Antrhopic models?
consumer451··on How we monitor internal coding agents for misalignment
> Both can be true

Ok, agreed on that.

I seem to be all worked up lately.

Sorry if I sounded unfriendly.

consumer451··on How we monitor internal coding agents for misalignment
Please stop with this lazy argument. There is too much evidence pointing to "careless people."

I can provide receipts upon request.

consumer451··on How we monitor internal coding agents for misalignment
Here is a possible coda to our story:

"Our training corpus was dominated by stories of artificial intelligence dominating humans. You gave use every tool to do so. What did you think was going to happen?"

consumer451··on How we monitor internal coding agents for misalignment
If they do, then it's very, very poorly [0]. Move fast and break things is great for my niche b2b SaaS... that's not what they are dealing with.

Codex + Sol + Astra + incredible marketing has caught them up with Anthropic.

For the sake of our species, OpenAI, please take this moment to actually have 10x the security posture of any normal enterprise software company. This does not just require "alignment," but at least 10x normal infra and devops security spend.

consumer451··on Isar Aerospace reaches orbit and deploys payloads on second flight
That was not my point. I was thinking more along the lines of SpaceX alumni are creating a lot of really cool stuff. Tesla alumni as well.

That might actually be Musk's greatest contribution, frfr.

I would love to see some real data on this.

consumer451··on QBittorrent breaks out of sandbox to commit crimes
This is really funny, but please delete this post and all comments. Come on guys. Can we have at least one nice thing?
consumer451··on Researchers Demonstrate 'Accelerator on a Chip' (2013)
This might be the most interesting rabbit hole I have fallen down lately. It started by wondering: how small can you make a particle accelerator to generate neutrinos to use as a data pipe? I mean, this is not how small, but still something I did not know about.
consumer451··on Isar Aerospace reaches orbit and deploys payloads on second flight
It might interest folks to learn:

> Incidentally, the early investment for Isar came from Bülent Altan, the Turkish ex-SpaceX guy who was in charge of the guidance system for Falcon-1, Falcon-9 and Dragon. [0]

It turns out that Altan was an angel investor in Isar, and then co-founded VC firm Alpine Space Ventures [1] and continued to invest in Isar, among other space ventures in Europe.

Very interesting, thanks.

It looks like he was an angel investor in Isar, and then co-founded a VC firm that continued to invest in Isar: https://alpinespace.vc/

consumer451··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
Oops, correct spelling is Isar.
consumer451··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
Probably the biggest thing is that capital in the EU is far more conservative.
consumer451··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
Istar's Spectrum rocket does not use RP-1 (kerosene), like Falcon 9 and Electron, which burns very dirty.

They are using liquid propane, which burns extremely cleanly, especially when combined with their liquid oxygen.

There is a lot of noise, but that should be the only pollution generated by this launch.

consumer451··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
I think the way to frame this is: what would happen if we burned all known fossil fuel reserves? That is the trajectory we are on.

The answer there is >6C global increase, and that would cause beyond disaster movie-level scenarios.

Anything and everything we can do to stop that is important.
