Privacy & Agency Rant:

While we missed the boat on Internet tracking, there is still time to avoid sailing through the final frontier of neural tracking.

Thanks to the BCI, we will soon be offered the trade of our privacy for the convenience of password-free login and faster typing. Next, there will be a quick TSA neural scan prior to boarding.

Then, thought crime will become a literal thing. If particular thoughts are not outlawed outright, they will at least prevent you from certain activities.

> Proposed neuro-rights include the right to identity, or the ability to control both one's physical and mental integrity; the right to agency, or the freedom of thought and free will to choose one's own actions; the right to mental privacy, or the ability to keep thoughts protected against disclosure; [0]

consumer451··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
The more practical approach appears to be fully on-orbit activities, as those are currently far harder to attribute. The field of "Space Domain Awareness" is still nascent and rapidly evolving.

See my other comment for my expanded take on this, informed by being a peaceful space-nerd who cannot seem to avoid this topic, even if I tried:

I have given this more thought, but too late to edit. I would like to add a very important specific fact of the modern day.

Thanks to the Balkanization of our media landscape, and social media targetting: "a slick turn of phrase that appeals to our base instincts/caveman brain" can be tailored just for you. It has never been easier to make us behave in crazy ways.

I genuinely believe that the existing incarnation of "social media" could lead to the death of billions of humans.

consumer451··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
I believe that attribution is more difficult in strictly on-orbit activities. I would imagine that these weaponized satellites use radar stealth approaches similar to modern fighter aircraft. AFAIK, ground radar is basically what we have for space awareness.

I would imagine that every new intelligence-related satellite will have more sensors to be situationally aware, and make attribution possible.

If you pay attention to space-nerd podcasts like MECO, "Space Domain Awareness" is getting a lot of investment. I believe that's because we are relatively blind at the moment.

consumer451··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Possibly, but look at modern times. It takes years to build social constructs that might guide us towards cooperation and non-violence. Yet, those can be overturned in an instant by a slick turn of phrase that appeals to our base instincts/caveman brain, which i believe we all have.
consumer451··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Agreed. My theory about our "great filter" event is that our technological advancement proceeds so much faster than our genetics, and that will be our ruin.

To put in plain terms, we keep inventing far better "spears" (including kinetic, bio, and chemical) that allow one to kill many, while still behaving like cavemen.

consumer451··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
I had edited my comment at the same moment you added yours. It made an 11 Pro Max I installed it behave almost like a brand new phone as far as snappiness. This blew my mind a bit, given what happened with iOS 26. Mind you, I only have 10 minutes of testing so far.
consumer451··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Kudos to Apple for still having their latest iOS run on hardware as old as iPhone 11, which was released 7 years ago.

How is the Android world faring in this regard? My last Android device was an Android One, but that seems to have been cancelled.

edit: holy crap, iOS 27 made an iPhone 11 pro max I just installed it on so much snappier! Absolutely crazy level of improvement.

consumer451··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Thanks for posting the videos. Two thoughts that came from watching that:

1. It is really interesting that we live on a planet that has such a society, along side one that had built nuclear weapons, and was soon to walk on the moon.

2. Our modern society has not progressed at all from any of these base instincts, and in some cases & applications we have gotten worse.

consumer451··on Garry Tan wants US open-weight AI labs to 'distill' frontier models, too
> To him, the true AI doomer scenario is for all the immense power of frontier AI to wind up in the hands of a single powerful, proprietary provider. “The nightmare scenario, the doomer scenario for AI is that there’s just one company,” he said. “It has the best access to capital. It has the best AI researchers. It runs away with it and suddenly there’s one company that’s monolithic. And that would be bad.

Well yes, as I think I said in a previous comment, on the current trajectory OpenAI and Anthropic will really stop releasing models due to distillation and regulatory pressures. Then, they would eat all knowledge work themselves, which would be the end of YC.

consumer451··on CIA Releases President's Daily Briefs in Commemoration of 9/11
Here is some more context, before and after. I highly encourage clicking each of these links:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_for_the_New_American_C...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office_of_Special_Plans

https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna6856550

I would like to plainly say something that is likely unpopular: the CIA has been relatively great in the last ~30 years for the USA, and the world. They do real research, state facts, and when asked, even sometimes publicly speak out against the geopolitical dumbasses leading their own country. They are often circumvented and ignored due to politics, which usually makes us all suffer. Our politicians ignore them, go around them, and then we all somehow blame them.

consumer451··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years

consumer451··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
Right, that's corporate speak. Welcome to gov speak:

> A Special Government Employee (SGE) can perform temporary federal duties for up to 130 days within any 365-consecutive-day period

https://www.flra.gov/Ethics_Rules_for_SGE

As an SGE, the person has legal influence, but ethics rules are relaxed. As an "advisor," there are almost zero ethics rules, and their influence is not legal, but wink wink. Many of the most influential people in the current gov are "advisors."

consumer451··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
Oh, thanks for the new to me info, I genuinely did not know this. Any idea why, and who replaced him?

It may be for regulatory reasons? Still, he is the "advisor."

consumer451··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
In a sane reality, this activity from OpenAI would have been shut down long ago.

Good thing our "AI Czar" is known to pg as the most evil person in SV.

edit: OpenAI is absolutely winning right now in mindshare, why are they doing this?

consumer451··on Ask HN: What Is Your P(doom)?
In the terms of short attention span modernity: 100% agree.

My problem with this entire phrasing is that it's somehow AI-centric according to Wikipedia, while AI doomerism feels like a luxury given all the other issues we face, which science and geopolitics already support:

consumer451··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
20+ years of preparation does a pretty good job though.

I often wonder about the world we would live in if the Brooks Brothers Riot had not succeeded. That appears to have been the turning point for the fall of the USA, and even more sadly, humanity.

consumer451··on Global Glacier Extinction Explorer
Maybe because when electric vehicles were becoming a thing, it was all: "The grid cannot handle it! You absolute morons!"

Now, put "AI" in front of "datacenters," and no such concerns appear in one's feed.

To build upon this, datacenters are the fastest growing build-out in history, are extremely fossil-fuel dependent, and nobody seems to care.

consumer451··on Global Glacier Extinction Explorer
Agreed. Assuming that climate change is real, and to add, it is happening faster than nearly all predictions: what are your going to do for yourself, and for you children/nephews and nieces? How do we prepare them?
consumer451··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
Thanks for the thoughtful reply.

This is the most "I get both sides" issue in my mind these days. I am still not sure where I fall, or if there is even a correct position with which to agree. It really seems like there are no good options.

On the one hand, if all knowledge work ended up in two dude's hands, that is really bad. On the other hand, if every surviving child victim of war (US, RU, IL, CN, whatever) has access to the knowledge to make custom viruses for a few grand, that is also really bad.

consumer451··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
Twitter is huge in KSA. Much more significant a share than other countries. Something like 60% to 70% of the population are active users.
consumer451··on Logo Programming Language
YES! This was exactly it. Thank you.

It seems my pen memory came from a different logo-driven bot. In-fact, the Big Trak was not even Logo-driven, but had a similar command system.

I appear to have combined childhood recollections, but that was the shape I was "remembering." No wonder, just look at that thing! lol

consumer451··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
OK, that is a plausible argument given Dario's public positions. I have to admit that I keep cutting them some slack for standing up against automated kill chains, and domestic surveillance.
consumer451··on Logo Programming
Anyone here remember a 1980's Logo-programmable robot that I once used in a TAG program? It had a pen, we would lay it on top of a giant sheet of paper.

It was like a little futuristic tank. I searched for a minute, and I cannot find the exact model. Did I imagine this?

consumer451··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
Yeah, I saw that. I wonder if there are any other AI labs that are naive (good?) enough to admit this type of thing.

Obviously, it's happening with all decent models.

consumer451··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
Holy shit. This is really interesting. AI used to impersonate, social media to amplify, and that led to a significant tactical defeat?

I don't want to live in interesting times anymore.

The first question should be: who supplies their military equipment?

The next question should be: who benefits?
