Privacy & Agency Rant:

While we missed the boat on Internet tracking, there is still time to avoid sailing through the final frontier of neural tracking.

Thanks to the BCI, we will soon be offered the trade of our privacy for the convenience of password-free login and faster typing. Next, there will be a quick TSA neural scan prior to boarding.

Then, thought crime will become a literal thing. If particular thoughts are not outlawed outright, they will at least prevent you from certain activities.

> Proposed neuro-rights include the right to identity, or the ability to control both one's physical and mental integrity; the right to agency, or the freedom of thought and free will to choose one's own actions; the right to mental privacy, or the ability to keep thoughts protected against disclosure; [0]

For a great breakdown on the SOTA (2023) tech, and the long term implications, please see this podcast with full written transcript.

In CC, "/exit" will tell you how to --resume <session-id> upon exit. This will eat zero tokens, and it actually does not require an active internet connection.

Ignorant questions for you and anyone else using DS:

1. who hosts the inference

2. which harness are you using with it, still CC?

consumer451··on Far-left party wins Berlin election, pledging to nationalise housing
I understand, as I was told this about AfD's recent performance as well. However, is this not an indication of what is to come in future national elections?

I mean, how does a local-only party plan to "nationalize housing?"

If this has zero bearing on future national policies, I would love to be talked down.

consumer451··on Far-left party wins Berlin election, pledging to nationalise housing
What is their position on Russia's war in Ukraine, and NATO in general?

I am not German, but from what I can tell it's basically no arms for the defense of Ukraine, and no NATO rebuilding.

Is that correct? Just like AfD, extremely convenient for one particular country.

Three years ago, a pro-imperial Russian told me that we will see regime change in the West, before in Moscow. Looking around the EU at the moment, it turns out that he was correct. What an absolute tragedy.

Firefox is my daily on desktop, but on mobile it's Safari. I finally got around to installing uBlock Origin Lite on iOS. I used to run the Firefox version on iOS, but that was discontinued long ago, and I never replaced it. I feel like a bit of an idiot for not doing this sooner.

consumer451··on Largest wildlife overpass in North America reduced wildlife collision by 91%
This has been stuck in my head ever since I wrote about the rebrand. My final proposal: "car-saver" or "car-saver overpass."

"Today, our State Department of Transportation completed their latest car-saver overpass. This one will prevent more than 300 highway-speed collisions per year, saving drivers a lot of money, pain, and heartache."

consumer451··on Largest wildlife overpass in North America reduced wildlife collision by 91%
The ROI is beyond solid. It's actually insane this wasn't done sooner at this location. The normal ROI for a wildlife crossing is 15 years. Here, it's two to three years.

> Cost savings: Each prevented wildlife–vehicle collision can save thousands of dollars—more than $19,000 per deer crash, $73,000 per elk, and $110,000 per moose—in vehicle, injury, and wildlife costs, making well-placed crossings a strong investment [0]

This section of highway had one deer-vehicle collision per day.

365 * $19,000 = $6,935,000 per year.

edit: this post and resulting thread made me realize that "wildlife crossing" sounds far too tree-hugger for our society. They need to rebrand to "obvious money-saving infrastructure," or better.

consumer451··on Largest wildlife overpass in North America reduced wildlife collision by 91%
Agree 100%. Also, hitting a deer at highway speeds can lead to the death of the occupants of the vehicle.

This is not some country road!

This is an actual win-win scenario, for humans and wildlife.

consumer451··on Pentagon weighs pulling nearly a third of U.S. forces from Europe
The biggest to suffer after the BAM is closed is the EU. It is not an accident that the USA decided not to support Saudi when they asked for air strikes last week.

ARAMCO just told the EU there will be no oil shipments next month.

Hurting the EU is a major goal of the current US admin.

consumer451··on Pentagon weighs pulling nearly a third of U.S. forces from Europe
Yes, the USA said that, but the damage was done. For many decades any inclinations for EU defense contracts to favor EU arms, were greatly frowned upon. France was derided for having made the right decision from go.

Post-WWII USA would give you Pax Americana, as long as you had no domestic defence industry.

What's next is capturing all of our audio and visual inputs from cradle to grave, so that we can be truly replaced.

Honestly, if that happened in a 100% trusted environment, it might be cool. But, there is no money in that. Well, maybe Apple would do that? Private Cloud Compute is cool af.

Still, we are far more likely fully cooked than fully trustworthy personal AI agents happening at scale.

When I have suggested names in other situations like this in the past, I spent the ~$10 to get the domain, and offered the transfer the free. Of course, not everyone would do this.

consumer451··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
The more practical approach appears to be fully on-orbit activities, as those are currently far harder to attribute. The field of "Space Domain Awareness" is still nascent and rapidly evolving.

I have given this more thought, but too late to edit. I would like to add a very important specific fact of the modern day.

Thanks to the Balkanization of our media landscape, and social media targetting: "a slick turn of phrase that appeals to our base instincts/caveman brain" can be tailored just for you. It has never been easier to make us behave in crazy ways.

I genuinely believe that the existing incarnation of "social media" could lead to the death of billions of humans.

consumer451··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
I believe that attribution is more difficult in strictly on-orbit activities. I would imagine that these weaponized satellites use radar stealth approaches similar to modern fighter aircraft. AFAIK, ground radar is basically what we have for space awareness.

I would imagine that every new intelligence-related satellite will have more sensors to be situationally aware, and make attribution possible.

If you pay attention to space-nerd podcasts like MECO, "Space Domain Awareness" is getting a lot of investment. I believe that's because we are relatively blind at the moment.

consumer451··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Possibly, but look at modern times. It takes years to build social constructs that might guide us towards cooperation and non-violence. Yet, those can be overturned in an instant by a slick turn of phrase that appeals to our base instincts/caveman brain, which i believe we all have.
consumer451··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Agreed. My theory about our "great filter" event is that our technological advancement proceeds so much faster than our genetics, and that will be our ruin.

To put in plain terms, we keep inventing far better "spears" (including kinetic, bio, and chemical) that allow one to kill many, while still behaving like cavemen.

Kudos to Apple for still having their latest iOS run on hardware as old as iPhone 11, which was released 7 years ago.

How is the Android world faring in this regard? My last Android device was an Android One, but that seems to have been cancelled.

edit: holy crap, iOS 27 made an iPhone 11 pro max I just installed it on so much snappier! Absolutely crazy level of improvement.

consumer451··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Thanks for posting the videos. Two thoughts that came from watching that:

1. It is really interesting that we live on a planet that has such a society, along side one that had built nuclear weapons, and was soon to walk on the moon.

2. Our modern society has not progressed at all from any of these base instincts, and in some cases & applications we have gotten worse.

consumer451··on Garry Tan wants US open-weight AI labs to 'distill' frontier models, too
> To him, the true AI doomer scenario is for all the immense power of frontier AI to wind up in the hands of a single powerful, proprietary provider. “The nightmare scenario, the doomer scenario for AI is that there’s just one company,” he said. “It has the best access to capital. It has the best AI researchers. It runs away with it and suddenly there’s one company that’s monolithic. And that would be bad.

Well yes, as I think I said in a previous comment, on the current trajectory OpenAI and Anthropic will really stop releasing models due to distillation and regulatory pressures. Then, they would eat all knowledge work themselves, which would be the end of YC.
