Keeping the beast in my nature under constant attack
submissionscomments
constantly··on X rolls out new ad format that can't be reported, blocked
Do you have any data to back up these claims? My sense has been the opposition, but I also don’t have any data to back it up. So I could be wrong, which is why I don’t make seemingly factual statements like you are.

But you sound so sure that I assume you have data, would you share it?

constantly··on D.C.'s ban on cashless businesses takes effect
What about electronic negative environmental externalities? It requires a while network of internet (backbones, cables, satellites, telecoms) and constant electricity generation to feed it, creation of credit cards, etc.

This all seems to have a significantly greater effect than the creation of a new physical bill that lasts 6-10 years.

constantly··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2023)
Looks like they work at Meta, but this is a scammy blind-referral submission scheme for them to refer random people to collect the $5k employee referral bonus. This is definitely discouraged.
constantly··on Training repayment agreements trap employees in their jobs
You’re not living up to your moniker’s namesake with this comment. As a general matter, people in fact should have enough agency to be able to evaluate a situation and decide to sign away certain protections. There are many exceptions to this, but signing away one’s ability to freely leave a job without consequence in exchange for upskilling at their employer’s expense falls squarely into the principle above.
constantly··on Winklevoss twins secretely withdrew $280M in assets before crypto firm collapsed
I haven’t heard of this, this is good news! Crypto is such a scam on its face.

Can you share the jurisdictions that are starting to regulate it?

constantly··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
No one is asking for a survey of apps that do this. You’re making the claim that it’s far from rare, so you have enough knowledge to make this claim. Share with us the smallest piece of your knowledge by naming one single other app that does this. It’s the least you can do since you’re making the claim. Please, I’m very curious!
constantly··on We are beginning to roll out new voice and image capabilities in ChatGPT
User impressions and revisit rate are key factors in raising money and showing success. It’s natural that they would select for user flows that keep you coming back daily rather than risk you don’t use it for a day or two waiting for an email.
constantly··on New tarantula species discovered in Thailand
Don’t you think given the context of the article, they were clearly talking about blue coloration in animals, or plants and animals?
constantly··on The era of America’s subminimum wage for tipped restaurant workers may be ending
We pay our interns the same rate as an entry level SWE, $185k, but divided up weekly for the intern period. There’s nothing wrong with internships at all.

You may mean unpaid internships specifically? I got my start when I otherwise wouldn’t have had an entry to my industry with an unpaid internship, but also recognize that it’s a privilege to be able to not be paid for months at a time early career. I would personally never not pay an intern, but think there is probably a place for unpaid interns.

constantly··on Three NorCal Tribes Announce Nation’s First Indigenous Ocean Protection Area
Out of curiosity how far back are you choosing to go to designate something as a tribal land?
constantly··on Unlimited Kagi searches for $10 per month
Yep, I think I’m going to try Kagi. I am so, so tired and exhausted of every search result on Google being “the top X in ${this_month_of_this_year}” with a list of Amazon affiliate links. I append Reddit to the searches for products now, but notice on higher margin items you can click into Reddit user history of people giving their “opinion” and see that every post they make is about that particular product.
constantly··on Alameda lost tens of millions because of a fat fingering mistake
“We” is doing a lot of heavy lifting. I am proud that I have never gotten burned by this sort of thing because I understand that if there’s a lot of hype it’s probably too good to be true.
constantly··on What if OpenDocument used SQLite? (2014)
Any text editor in the world, even the ones that ship with the most barebones shells, can open json and xml and present their data to the user.

SQLite files require opening in a DB terminal or using special software to even get to the point where one can see what’s there at all. Further the entire internet basically natively supports XML and JSON.

constantly··on Grabbing Dinner
Your first sentence doesn’t seem to align with your second sentence. Can you clear up the confusion?

Survival is justification for eating animals -> These people are bad because they eat animals but could eat non-animals to survive. Are you saying survival is justified to eat animals only if there are no other things to eat?

constantly··on Will Cyber Security Be Replaced by AI?
Honestly I’m not sure I ever understand the content myself and am instead repeating patterns of what has worked in the past applied to new domains.
constantly··on Breakfast cereal is in long-term decline
Fat isn’t bad for you aside from heart disease and being a major risk factor in a myriad of other health conditions you mean?
constantly··on Breakfast cereal is in long-term decline
If a McMuffin is your go to instead of cereal aren’t you just trading sugar for fat, cholesterol, and sodium? Doesn’t seem like a great replacement if health is important.
constantly··on I built Excel for Uber and they ditched it
I wouldn’t try moving code written for one employer and using it another employer. Unfortunately for me my employers have been somewhat litigious; thankfully Uber doesn’t have that reputation.
constantly··on The inside story of Threads
How so? Aside from the name change X was exactly the same experience that Twitter had been giving for a decade or more.
constantly··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
It’s not that you’re completely and totally wrong that makes me mad, it’s that you state everything with such an authoritative tone that people won’t doubt it and will get into a bad situation based on what you’re saying.
constantly··on Undying dread: A 400-year-old corpse, locked to its grave
Not a very nice question, but why were these cultures so stupid as to believe in this sort of stuff to the extent that they regularly did things like desecrate corpses to keep them from coming back to life?

Further, what things are we doing now that future generations will ask the same question about us?

constantly··on Public restrooms are hard to find in America
This is not normal, respectfully. Something is up and you should go get checked out by a doctor sooner rather than later.
constantly··on Flexport is rescinding a bunch of signed offer letters
Will try to remember this when their job postings hit the front page of this website tomorrow morning.
constantly··on Consumers defrauded on Zelle are left high and dry by the banks that created it [pdf]
This is a really good story to highlight how good credit cards are for this situation. It’s totally reasonable for a vendor to freeze shipping via credit card purchase until they’ve received confirmation they will be paid. Basically modern escrow. Sorry you seem to have been caught up in a rare edge case, I’ve been in the same situation, but am super happy that the system makes 99% of payments totally frictionless unless occasionally I’m traveling abroad (or ordering abroad) and they have additional checks.

Long live the virtues of credit card payments!

constantly··on Emoji Generator with AI
Here’s a good thread where this is discussed in detail, plus my own anecdotal experience:

constantly··on Emoji Generator with AI
I just saw this was on fly and thought the same thing lol. But I also thought to myself “this is actually a good use for fly, nice simple app to see if there’s traction before moving to something reliable.”
constantly··on Flexport is rescinding a bunch of signed offer letters
They also oversubscribed office space and are actively working to get out of signed leases, or to sublease where that’s not possible, according to a friend over there. Morale is a bit low at the moment with the CEO being ousted, office space being given up, offers rescinded, and RIFs in the horizon.
constantly··on The perpetual truck driver shortage is not real
Thanks for posting this. I was content to downvote and move on, but I think you did a good job here. A lot of what the post said is pretty handwavey and leaves out key details to the point of basically becoming FUD at worst, or charitably someone who has only a very superficial understanding of these things through a lack of doing any critical research on the topic.

You only hit on a couple of their points, but I note that all the rest of them at a glance are subject to the same sort of deficiency from critical analysis and factual sources.

constantly··on California and Florida now lead the country in climate change risks
You’re saying per capita increase in incidents is the same in Colorado or Nebraska or Minnesota as it is in Florida and California? Can you provide the data you used to reach this conclusion to back up this statement that seems absurd on its face?
constantly··on Transformers as Support Vector Machines
I wouldn’t go this far, applied ML articles are my favorite articles. If you’re in the arena, it’s good to see things that other people have done from a practical perspective so you can ape it in your own work or not give it further consideration.
