consp··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering
> but not enough interest to make what they ship _good_

I'm having the impression business decisions always win, time is always reduced and requirements always changed half-way during a project, having a much greater impact than any bored old engineer.

consp··on Facebook is paying controversial creators to produce rage-bait content
Fiduciary duty only means acting in the interest of those providing you with money. If they demand sanity that can become the guiding goal instead of money. Never going to happen in the money first, I want more society we live in but there is no reason it can't. See some activist shareholders demanding change to boards to ensure certain outcomes not related to money.
consp··on Open-source interactive map for the Aug 12 total solar eclipse
I found the sudden quietness quite a lot more interesting. It was really weird, not like nighttime where you glide into it but sudden like someone flipped a switch and it was done.
consp··on Microsoft Word for Windows 1.1a, Native X64 Port
Might the lack there of be copyright related? I guess not something you want to burn your hands on.
consp··on Illinois just told every operating system to start reporting your kid's age
"this option is not available in the state of Illinois"

Seems easy enough to implement before 2028 and only serve laptops without OS.

consp··on I stopped trusting USB-C cable labels and started testing them
I had a cheap no-name cable which claims 3.1 speeds (and thus needs a marker), though it lacks all differential pairs and borks every usb connection (after I cut it, it was obvious). No clue why it contains a marker chip but doesn't have any conductors. Likely for usb-pd but you do not want to put any power though it anyway as the conductors were cheap copper clad aluminium.

The color coding is optional and ambiguous: Blue is recommended, not required, and there is no difference for 3.0, 3.1 (10gbit) or others. And you now also have red, yellow, green, purple and orange, which have no defined meaning in any standard and are just whatever a manufacturer wants to do. There is nothing preventing someone from selling standard 4 conductor A ports with red coloring.
consp··on Atlassian Rovo Exfiltrates Data, Bypassing Controls
It's nice they force rovo now for document/version diff's. Because you need to burn down the rainforest for those. (sarcasm ... for obvious reasons)
consp··on Three Six Mafia – Data about "6/6/6 dating" (2024)
Then again, based on local income statistics. Don't know locality of the third one. It's the good old, lies, damned lies and statistics (and meant as humor thus not really an issue).
consp··on I am retiring from fulltime writing (& pseudonymity) to launch Guardian Angel
Not OP but it implies all efforts are not intentional but at best by chance. For instance, the state of freely available LLM chatbots still makes me cry by the amount of crap they spew out confidently, which is not intentional. (tiny bit of sarcasm, but only a tiny bit)
consp··on New cars are getting 1.2cm longer and 0.5cm taller each year
Good then that all vehicles over 6m length and 2.05m wide are not allowed to park in my city. It's good most pickups have custom wide tires, as it makes them too wide.
consp··on Don't be a meat proxy
N=1, and biased towards the type of questions asked. N+1, If I use one of the search engine sloptools I get frequent inaccurate answers which is I guess what the majority of people do.
consp··on BMW Spider-Man in-car advertising
I've never had a point where it is dangerous. It vibrates the steering wheel and that's it. Even on the autobahn's 2.20m wide roadwork left lanes it works good/not bad enough I just leave it on. Lane keeping is not mandatory, only a warning system.
consp··on A California aquifer may have crossed the point of no return
Depends on if they use evaporative cooling or not. But the water returned is warmer which can harm the ecosystem quite a bit, both for power plants and data centers.
consp··on 1,741 "informed" consents with one click? GDPR complaint filed
Legitimate interest does not exist and is a loophole in the law which should be killed. You can challenge it but the authorities who should handle that are grossly underfunded.
consp··on Why copper still rules the motherboard trace
The images scream cheap cow manure product comparison "our product is better than lousy competition". And it reads like a bloated LLM digest.
consp··on Vehicle Motion Cues
Is this related to roll and pitch motion in sea sickness where by knowing the horizon and direction of travel can help?
consp··on Jimothy the raccoon has a rare spinal condition. Here's what that means
Don't want to rain on the parade of something people like but this kind of title tells me nothing and I detest it. It tells me the thing is going to die like any other animal and that's the circle of life yet it wants to create engagement. Please stop publishing like this.

Tell me why the spinal condition is important. Tell me why I need to read this article because of [magic?]. Now I know nothing and don't like it.

consp··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
I've had plenty of issues with old bundled GCC compilers which were fixed in later versions. I'm feeling this is a psychological thing, not necessarily software related. (Doesn't invalidate the feeling though)
consp··on Apple defeats liability for not scanning iCloud for CSAM
My guess is the person is drawing from one country and applying it to all. The rules are varied all over the EU. e.g. You can buy pheasant, rabbit and venison at the butcher shop where I live. No hunting required, which you can do but requires a special permit, next to the weapons permit for the shotgun and is very limited in scope.
consp··on How we measured AI writing across arXiv, and where the measurement breaks
Even the translated version of the field equations paper has a 1% match only. Which I expected to be a tiny bit higher but still near 0.
consp··on Hacker wipes Romania's land registry database
Merkel tree audit log of the data, the poor man's Blockchain, works fine and good enough. Now you have a db and you can claim to use a blockchain for pr reasons.
consp··on US gas prices hit an average of $4 a gallon again
We used to have red diesel for agricultural use which was tax exempt. So they added a coloring agent which would make your tank red and thus noticeable if you used it in a regular car.
consp··on US gas prices hit an average of $4 a gallon again
I thought wait isn't it lower, but that's imperial gallon which is about 3/4l more per gallon. I always mess those up.
consp··on Sealed tomb filled with paintings and inscriptions discovered in Egypt
What's the moral guidance and purpose of a tomb of someone who's mourning has passed for over 3 millennia and who has been forgotten due to time?
consp··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
> If you are depending on some behavior not covered in the regression tests, how do you know the next minor release won't break you?

Decades of intrinsic knowledge. Which a rewrite lacks.

imho the issue is the language used. AI rewrites are cheap and cheap exercises require a great deal of scrutiny and proof of correctness. Simply using regressions test lacks the intrinsic knowledge of a decades old codebase stuck in developers minds.

Claiming a rewrite is better because it passes all tests is a flex, a new version requires a boatload of evidence for people to accept it as an improvement and not just "passes tests, written in rust via LLM so it must be better". Run it in production for a year in a sufficiently large system and you might be somewhere.

consp··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
Maybe you went over 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 twice and came back to positive.
consp··on Apple targets dozens of OpenAI employees with legal letters
Cause and effect can be delayed.
consp··on Pebble Mega Update – July 2026
Less than 1% yoy combined. This is far over that when you combine all failures. Battery degradation is of course excluded.
consp··on Pebble Mega Update – July 2026
Mobile, WiFi and GPS would require a substantially bigger battery to achieve the planned 30 days (I get about 25 days). I guess it wasn't a design goal.
