cons0le··on German president says US is destroying world order
Europeans are telling me right now that americans have a moral imperative to mount an armed insurrection against the government.

Which do you think is easier, insurgency or leaving twitter?

I didn't just protest against this.

I voted, ran mutual aid networks, donated, and canvassed for progressive candidates. And when that failed I canvassed for moderates that I didn't want. I went to churches and asked why they were pushing this garbage. My aunt and uncle were told they weren't welcome in their local church unless they voted for trump and disowned all family members that didn't. The church has a trump sign right on the front lawn. When I went to ask about that being illegal they looked at me like I had 3 heads. My aunt and uncle had to move cities.

My friend at the the no kings protest had police fire a beanbag into his eyesocket. He was in his second story apartment watching the protest from above, I was right next to him. We weren't even on the street and they fired right into his eye. He was forced to take a plea deal even though the cops had body cameras. The footage was never handed over, despite a FOIA request. He got no money. He already didn't have health insurance.

Its comes off as incredibly hollow when I hear europeans say "nobody tried to stop this" or "Its amazing how little resistance they've faced". We had millions of people protesting without a peep in the news.

I really don't want the hear talking about how we should use the 2nd amendment from people that can't even quit twitter.

cons0le··on German president says US is destroying world order
Now if only we could get europeans to leave twitter and instagram. Its one of the easiest ways to cut the source of power. We need government agencies and politicians especially to get off of there.
cons0le··on Eat Real Food
Its the same thing with eliminating red40 dye. its a crumb. At the very least they should end corn syrup subsidies. Its telling how people often bring up people buying candy with food stamps, but never trace the source of the problem back to how we subsidize bad food. America has a huge blindspot for corporate welfare
cons0le··on Comparing AI agents to cybersecurity professionals in real-world pen testing
We're right in the danger zone where AI isn't good enough to replace you, but it's definitely good enough to convince executives that it can.

I've used this for a decade and still use it. Easy compatibility with tmux, can ssh, use llm, etc.

cons0le··on Stop Doom Scrolling, Start Doom Coding: Build via the terminal from your phone
We need to take this idea further. Instead of "remote first", I'm waiting for the first company that will bodly declare "you can do all your work on your phone".

I'm tired of lugging my laptop around. Let me work from the beach with my phone and ar glasses.

cons0le··on Why is the Gmail app 700 MB?
First software ate the world. Then software sales ate software. Now its time for AI to eat software sales.
cons0le··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
Let me pay usage based, with full transparency in hosting, infra, and energy costs. Like a utility.

Subscription services are like hungry hungry hippos, you give them $10 a month and next year they want $100.

I honestly think if everyone starts paying, it will only make them remove the free tier quicker. I think society is better with youtube free, even if ads are annoying.

cons0le··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
MrBeast is a hack, but its worth pointing out that all "progress bars" are bad design. You could make the same complaint against most of the progress bars in MsDOS. There was never a consistency in timing so you can never really use them to gauge how much time is left.
cons0le··on All AI Videos Are Harmful (2025)
I'm ashamed to admit that this made me laugh.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJllhkPqixM

I would be alright with making these more expensive to make though, so they don't overrun youtube. Also i'm sure the person that made this had to do a lot of work. It wasn't just a few prompts

cons0le··on All AI Videos Are Harmful (2025)
And computers allowed that slop to come into the real world. Now 95% of my physical mail is automated mailer junk asking me to sell my home/car
cons0le··on As AI gobbles up chips, prices for devices may rise
>It is as if the industry has decided to focus on AI and nothing else.

I mean, isn't this exactly what happened? I could be wrong about this, but didn't ycombinator themselves say they weren't accepting any ideas that didn't include AI?

80 percent of the jobs people reach out to me for are shady AI jobs that I have no interest in. Hiring in other non-AI jobs seems to have slowed.

When I talk to "computer" people, they only want to talk about AI. I wish I could quit computers and never look at a screen again.

cons0le··on As AI gobbles up chips, prices for devices may rise
This is a text based website though. It should be fast on everything. Most websites are a bloated mess, and a lot slower
cons0le··on How we lost communication to entertainment
If serious conversation isn't possible on social media, then what do you call this?

Is the conversation we're having now not both serious and on social media?

I think if the great minds of old had access to our modern internet, they would have no trouble communicating their ideas. It's not like all social media is short form. You can type a whole book into the comment box here if you want.

cons0le··on How we lost communication to entertainment
Hear hear. Ban all advertising. We could do it slow.

Start by banning all gambling and drug commercials. That's like 20% of all commercials right there. This is already normal in other countries.

Then ban all billboards. People hate them already.

Then the big one, ban targeted advertising. With personalized ads gone, all of the incentives that make data collection profitable are gone.

Of course there will still be bad actors that want data mining to continue. But right now you can't even read 95% of websites because they have popups that make you agree to data mining just to get in. I'll be searching for like, a recipe and they want my name, device IP, browser fingerprint, and anything else they can pinch.

I'm searching for a nice spinach salad recipe. I go to google

First it fires up an LLM, which will run a GPU in an AI data center that they probably cleared a forest to build.

I just made nvdia stronger. I just helped pump their AI "adoption" numbers. And I helped train an AI that will help layoff me and my friends.

As always I run the search again with "-noai" at the end. Now I'm searching twice for no reason. The results were better, and faster 10 years ago.

It gives me results and I click the first link. A video that I can't pause starts auto playing. This recipe isn't that good so I go back and find another. I need to click the back button 4 times.

I try another link. And get another pop up. I opt into data mining this time because uBo is having trouble with the full page transparent overlays. Now they have my data to sell to 3rd party intermediaries that will sell them to companies like palantir and cambridge analytica. Every search builds a little more of my "shadow profile".

Maybe I should have just gone to the library and taken a picture. All I wanted was a salad recipe and I've now helped train the system that made brexit possible. I've helped nvdia. I've helped the very AI datacenters that I hate. I've helped the data miners.

The experience of using a computer in 2025 is exhausting. Particularly search engines. They used to work so good. They used to be so fast.

cons0le··on How we lost communication to entertainment
Sure, but there's nothing worse than when you want to have a serious conversation with someone, and all they can make are jokes.

There are a lot of serious conversations we need to have as a society right now. And collectively, all we can do is make jokes.

cons0le··on How we lost communication to entertainment
My head was preparing to spin if he had said he gets all of his news from google Gemini.

It's a depressing thought, but I bet we will see younger people in our lifetime that just get news exclusively from LLMs

cons0le··on How we lost communication to entertainment
I had such high hopes for blue sky. The team seems highly un-problematic. Every time I go on there it's just happy stories and people communicating.

But still almost nobody uses it. And now worst of all, people are saying it doesn't "count" as real federation.

It seems like we're letting perfect be the enemy of good. But what do I know

cons0le··on How we lost communication to entertainment
The main difference is no personalized algorithm ranking content to increase engagement.

The algorithm has consumed reels/shorts/tiktok/insta. Being extremely inflammatory is rewarded there.

cons0le··on How we lost communication to entertainment
For me, google searches are defaulting to "AI mode"

I just asked it the same question on 2 different devices.

The question I asked was harder than why is the sky blue. I asked it "who was Edmund Fitzgerald".

One device, it gives me the ship. The other device, it gives me the person. I can copy/paste the answers here, if we want to compare.

Again, this could happen because I used "too hard" of a question. But I'm definitely getting 2 different answers.

You can of course, do this will almost every LLM. I can ask copilot 3 times and get conflicting answers each time.

Maybe for some types of questions that's beneficial. But for simple "what is X" questions, it's not as useful.

cons0le··on How we lost communication to entertainment
I'd love to lobby for "the right" to opt out of AI features.

When I google search "why is the sky blue" , it spins up an LLM. This is incredibly wasteful for simple, known answers.

When my friend googles the same thing, it spins up the LLM again. Google was a pioneer of search indexing, and now it seems like we don't attempt to index answers at all. They're spinning up an LLM every time because they're trying to run up the AI "adoption" metrics.

I'd love to be able to ask for simple things, like the address of the local restaurant 3 blocks away, without firing up a GPU in an AI data center.

I don't always want to "talk with" a computer. Sometimes I just want to "use" a computer. Maybe that makes me a fool. Or an old man yelling at clouds.

Oh man, this is amazing. Thank you for this.

I think I'll build one of my own and let others use it.

Thank you for at least acknowledging that we may eventually feel differently about AI.

I'm so tired of being called a luddite just for voicing reservations. My company is all in on AI. My CEO has informed us that if we're not "100% all in on AI", then we should seek employment elsewhere. I use it all day at work, and it doesn't seem to be nearly enough for them.

cons0le··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
Absolutely. This feels raw, human, and authentic.

I notice people often use the "aesthetic of intelligence" to mask bad arguments. Just because we have good formatting, spelling, and grammar with citations and sources -doesnt mean the argument is correct.

Sometimes people get mad, sometimes they crash out. I would rather live in the world with a bunch of emotional humans, than in some AI powered skynet world.

>Nobody complains about alfalfa farmers

I don't know what Internet sites you visit, but people absolutely, 100% complain about alfalfa farmers online, especially in regards to their water usage in CA.

>I am even willing to bet you think humans currently outnumber animals

I'm not sure what makes you assume that about me. I'm well aware that there are more animals than humans?

It's clear that this is no longer a productive discussion about animal welfare.

cons0le··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
Yep. For example with google searches. There's no comprehensive option to opt out of all AI. You can (for now) manually type -noai after every google search, but that's quite annoying and time consuming.

You're breaking the expected behavior of something that performed flawlessly for 10+ years, all to deliver a worse, enshitified version of the search we had before.

For now I'm sticking to noai.duckduckgo.com

But I'm sure they'll rip that away eventually too. And then I'll have to run a god dang local search engine just to search without AI. I'll do it, but it's so disappointing.

I think getting everyone around me to stop eating meat is not based in objective reality.

If we had better animal welfare laws and meat became prohibitively expensive, I would be absolutely fine with that.

I think incremental progress is possible. We shouldn't let perfect be the enemy of good.
