confiq··on NFT’s aren’t a harmless digital fad – they’re a disaster for our planet
I find it really interesting that big chunk of tech people don't believe in cryptocurrency! From day 0 until today, there is always this doubt and it's fine...

Not all cryptocurrency are heavily based on CPU/GCU or I/O!!! As someone already posted, neo and nano currency are not based on "heavy" power usage. We could argue what "heavy power usage" is but you can design cryptocurrency not to assume big amount of electricity.

Imagine that bitcoin is 1st and worst cryptocurrency, but the technology can be improved and it's improving!

there are crypto-coints that don't depend heavily on cpu/gpu calculation.

why is it FUD? Because environment impact is not that big?
confiq··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
> So it looks to amazon as being successfully delivered to the return warehouse, but what actually got delivered was a brick, to some random house

but how amazon does not check the quality of the return? I mean, even if UPS confirms that the package arrived to right address, wouldn't someone from amazon warehouse check if the package is valid?

or maybe create a technology that does not waste that amount of energy and advocate for that?

That is more respectful than yelling "STFU" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

confiq··on JavaScript for Shell Scripting
I totally get your point! As someone who is not coming from JS, I agree with you!

But you must understand that I/O in JS is async, it's how the language is build! People who are advanced in async programming find this very comfortable.

> Sonic is integrated in all Crisp search products on the Crisp platform. It is used to index half a billion objects on a $5/mth 1-vCPU SSD cloud server (as of 2019). Crisp users use it to search in their messages, conversations, contacts, helpdesk articles and more.

yes, this could be designed much much better.

there is this twitter user that claims that non-elastic employees can't contribute[1]. I wish somebody could summarise this romance between AWS vs Elastic for simpler people because I can't catch up :(

confiq··on Licensing changes to Elasticsearch and Kibana
hmm, maybe I should ask, do we have somebody who is using this on production with huge amount of data?
confiq··on Tell HN: Dropbox now requires access to contacts for Google login
as for password, I use password manager.

Problem with oauth that I can't make e-mail unique and I can't know where spam is coming from.

ex: user+dropbox@mydomain.com will be unique for that domain.

confiq··on Tell HN: Dropbox now requires access to contacts for Google login
why people would use oauth for services like this? I always use anonymous email
confiq··on Licensing changes to Elasticsearch and Kibana
I've just checked, you are right!

Correct me if I'm wrong, AWS ES service still uses ES free licence but they've re-written the plugins so they won't use ES and pay ES fee?

With new licence, AWS won't be able to use ES as SaaS?

> Apple has also taken a public stance on privacy and their devices aren’t seemingly backdoored as seen in the LEAs

No idea what LEA stands for but apple did not encrypt after FBI complain: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-apple-fbi-icloud-exclusiv...

> dropped plans to let iPhone users fully encrypt backups of their devices in the company's iCloud service after the FBI complained that the move would harm investigations

If you are referring to FBI-Apple dispute, if apple is complying with Chinese government, it will comply with USA government. That is how things are.

I'm not defending google, far away from it. They are not much better but they protect user data exactly because apple make fun of them. They now do extreme measures just to protect the privacy so they will not destroy their reputation even more.

I'm not sure that if I use ES in my datacenter I would be effected as long as it's internal tool for analysing data.

I'm not lawyer but this is what I understand from their statement.

It could be that I've blocked ads in my network or my extreme hate for ads lead to have unpopular opinion about it.

Every company uses my data for analytic purposes. Ads that I do see in google play are almost same as I see in apple store. Both take my data and try to serve me the best. In fact, I don't think it's necessary evil but what bothers me is pretending that one company save my data better or make me believe they don't analyse my data.

Everybody does it, who says it does not analyse your data, he is lying.

You know apple has news-advertising and searchads that is based on iAds[1] ? Trust me, they need your data to work properly!
