coned88··on We Tried Slack and Regretted It
Personally we use slack at work and it's a terrible product. Yes it's nice that we can see pictures and gifs inline with the text but the client is not great. The mobile client is even worse. The bloody thing just doesn't work. I'll get a message via the desktop app and 10-15 minutes later get the push notification on my phone. Then I can only see some of the push notification on my phone and when I go to click the notification to read it. The entire channel or DM it came from is not up to date. So if I do have service which I may not have I have to then wait for the messages to download and for it to reconcile what has been read.

Any irc or xmpp clients do not have these issues. products like Whatsapp and telegram don't have these issues.

just stop playing games and don't stream media from those services.
coned88··on Apple’s Tim Cook Delivers Blistering Speech on Encryption, Privacy
don't you waste a lot of battery going through a vpn though on your cell phone? I'd love to hear more about this setup.

> I gateway all my devices through one computer running a stripped down kernel. Through this host I monitor all network connections. I block ads and of course this means I block Apple.

Do you do this always via a vpn or something or was it just to try it out?

coned88··on Ask HN: What will be the future for email?
I really don't see how it was replaced. Now we just have three or more smaller products that some people use.

many people still use XMPP and magnitudes more use XMPP and don't even know it.

coned88··on Ask HN: What will be the future for email?
> In recent years were born hundreds of services that have tried to make email less painful.

Most if not all of those services were proprietary and tied to the success of one company. Only the Darkmail alliance to the best of my knowledge is actually putting out a new open protocol not tied to their bottom line. Not sure if they have actually put out an RFC yet.

It's like people saying Slack will one day will replace IRC or XMPP. It will never happen. It may if slack started as it's own protocol with a simple RFC and the company was an implementation of said open protocol. Offering a paid option with the option to also do it by yourself for free.

The future of email will start with a new open standard and RFC everybody has access to. It will offer benefits not facilitated by current technologies and will be easily adopted when such happens. Until this happens though there is no reason to replace email. Companies are not going dive into one company and create some massive monopoly who will then hold them hostage.

I really want tmux or screen to just scroll when I mouse wheel up or press the up arrow on the selected window.

I don't like having togo into copy mode.

coned88··on Ask HN: What's the hardware (read: laptop) that has lasted you the most?
Thinkpad T40 from 2003 still going fine
coned88··on Ask HN: Is moving from ops to dev a sensible move for increased job opportunity?
Where are you looking for jobs?

The normal Linux systems administrator role eventually will go away. Many people don't believe it but it eventually will because it's a job that can be automated away.

The use of Linux as a systems is not going to go away. The need for people who know Linux is ever growing. A bit of a conundrum.

You are only seeing two polar extremes here and it doesn't actually reflect what the market represents. Competent linux sys admins are moving into devops and sre type positions where they are taking on more development responsibility. Focusing on automation and building tools that facilitate developers rather than transactional systems administration duties of the past.

Many companies now hire developers and devops/sre candidates from the same pools.

So there's a middle ground for you. If you still like linux then I'd suggest you really hone up on your scripting and really learn your networking and Linux internals and move to one of the mentioned positions. They are a plenty.

This is really quite sad. When you are around that age you don't really think about those things.

Truly though, article and content posting like this are what make HN such a great place. I would have never seen this had I not read this site. Thank you for posting it mikecircle.

coned88··on Thunderbird Usage Continues to Grow
For me really I have my personal mail on my home desktop via thunderbird and there is zero reason to ever have it anyplace else.

Nothing is life is so important it can't wait until I get home for an answer. If it is so important like work email then they will provide me with a phone and an email account which they do. I'll gladly carry that. But for my personal use. I just don't see the point. Do I really need to see that recruiters email right now? Do I really need to see the amazon shipment confirmation right now? Nope.

I have all of my passwords in a keepass db which is also only accessible via my home desktop. I can't access anything even if I needed to since everything has its own pw which I don't know.

As I said. Nothing is that important.

Nobody is getting VP titles and is still doing much programming. There would be maybe one VP per dept.

I don't know why. Yes IPS does have the best image quality but it is awful for eye strain.
coned88··on Ask HN: I got let go this morning. What should I do next?
What's the benefit of a startup? Seems like more hours for less pay while always needing to get things done. I fail to see the appeal. They just have lunches and dinners which appeal to people.

One bit of advice I can give is to not use IPS displays. They are terrible on the eyes compared to VA panels.

Can somebody explain the intel processor freedom thing. They say this is the first intel processor that doesn't rely on a signed bios.
coned88··on Ask HN: How do you combat eye strain?
Stop using IPS or TN monitors.

Buy monitors with VA panels and lower brightness. Your eye strain will go away.
