comice··on Element One – All of Matrix, WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram in one place
> for encryption fans, I've been wondering for a long time now: why would you trust ANY 3rd party with your so sensitive data instead of running your own service? Are you not aware of OMEMO for XMPP?

we ran our own XMPP server for over 10 years using the "off the record" plugin for end to end encryption. Development seem to basically stop on open chat clients a few years ago and everything started getting crufty. (I see Pidgin dev has apparently picked back up again to some extent, as has Adium, to a much lesser extent).

"off the record" mostly worked ok, between Pidgin users, but failed with other clients.

A couple of OMEMO plugins came along but making them work (and keeping them working) was a continual drain - and we're only a small team with only 2 operating systems (Linux and OSX)!

My hunch is that enough people just moved to things like Whatsapp and Slack etc that developers were no longer using chat clients they could hack on. People stopped being able to scratch their itches.

Not to mention lack of any/decent XMPP client support for syncing histories between multiple clients, or handling inline images and things. All that modern stuff people expect.

Things like Mattersmost tried to fit in here but we just didn't get along with them.

Eventually Element/Matrix matured enough and while it was far from perfect, it worked and we sadly finally gave up on XMPP.

comice··on Jellyfin: Free Software Media System
I only use Plex because they have a native LG webos app.

jellyfin has one too and are currently in the process of getting into the official LG app store, awesome!

it was rejected a couple of times for some bugs the LG reviewers found, all of which are fixable and being worked on. looks pretty much a done deal.

comice··on Bellingcat Crowdsources Spycraft, Scales Up Sleuthing
You're arguing about definitions of words.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowdsourcing

> "Crowdsourcing is a sourcing model in which individuals or organizations obtain goods or services, including ideas, voting, micro-tasks and finances, from a large, relatively open and often rapidly evolving group of participants."

The fact remains, Bellingcat are funded in ways that we could expect to compromise their journalism. The IEEE article doesn't mention any of that and only mentions the Kickstarter.

comice··on Bellingcat Crowdsources Spycraft, Scales Up Sleuthing
The main focus of my comment was their funding sources, because the IEEE false suggest they are crowd sourced. The website I linked described those funding sources, and they can be corroborated elsewhere.

I've since linked to articles by Max Blumenthal and Aaron Maté detailing just some of the issues with Bellingcat's work.

comice··on Bellingcat Crowdsources Spycraft, Scales Up Sleuthing
Wikipedia class the greyzone as Max Blumenthal's blog but one of the articles I posted is by Aaron Maté. I find him consistently honest and thorough - I don't know much about Max Blumenthal.

I'm curious what your assessment of bellingcat as a source is? Surely it cannot stand up to your scrutiny.

comice··on Bellingcat Crowdsources Spycraft, Scales Up Sleuthing
I pasted the relevant claims in my comment, but point taken.

Do you find Aaron Maté more credible?

Lots of criticism of my choice of source here, so I'll add a couple of articles from Aaron Maté too:

comice··on Bellingcat Crowdsources Spycraft, Scales Up Sleuthing
If there is anything about the claims I highlighted in the article I linked to that you think is wrong, feel free to mention them.
comice··on Bellingcat Crowdsources Spycraft, Scales Up Sleuthing
> it is deeply concerning that a trade orginisation like IEEE would wade into political affairs and write a puff piece on Bellingcat who is obviously a creature of the UK intelligence establishment.

yes, this is the critical point. me and "thrwway34" can argue about the trustworthiness of bellingcat, but IEEE has clearly picked a side.

comice··on Bellingcat Crowdsources Spycraft, Scales Up Sleuthing
The article implies Bellingcat are crowd funded (they only mention one kickstarter campaign from 2014) but their funding is concerning, and their investigations deeply biased. They are not at all to be trusted:

"funded by The Atlantic Council (a think-tank with deep ties to the U.S. government, NATO, war manufacturers, and their allies), and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) (another infamous U.S. front organization heavily involved in so-called color revolution regime change operations all around the world)"

"an alleged group of amateur on-line researchers who have spent years shilling for the U.S. instigated war against the Syrian government, blaming the Douma chemical attack and others on the Assad government, and for the anti-Russian propaganda connected to, among other things, the Skripal poisoning case in England, and the downing of flight MH17 plane in Ukraine. It has been lauded by the corporate mainstream media in the west. "

comice··on I made a mistake with Terraform and Azure made it worse
ah ok, phew! I guess the OP just didn't know about that - they seemed surprised it was recoverable!
comice··on I made a mistake with Terraform and Azure made it worse
"immediately raise a ticket with Azure Support, who were able to grab the resources from “somewhere” (I guess when you delete a resource in Azure, it’s still on a disk somewhere, for a while), and we got our database and backups back"

what the hell is Azure doing pretending to delete things?

How long do Azure keep your data after you think you've deleted it?

Is there a way to ensure data stored in Azure is actually destroyed when you ask for it to be destroyed?

comice··on Steve Jobs in Kyoto
I'm sure some don't give Jobs the credit he's due, but I'd say it's far more common for people to have too much reverence for him. You yourself here have reduced his often outrageous and terrible behaviour simply as "brashness".
comice··on Pfizer is testing a pill that, if successful, could cure Covid-19
I've been wondering about this for a while, do you have a reference?

Do you know how humidity affects transmission?

Pre-pandemic I used to go indoor bouldering where there tends to be a lot of chalk in the air and I was curious how that affects transmission. Couldn't decide if the dryer air meant less transmission, or the larger particles meant more maybe. Couldn't find anything about it.

comice··on Moving BBC Online to the Cloud
nice thanks, that looked promising but I've checked a number of older articles and they have no amp version (despite the HTML for the site referencing an amp version, the url is 404!)

I'll see if I can figure out if all newer pages will have permanent amp versions, or whether all amp versions drop away over time.

comice··on Moving BBC Online to the Cloud
yes, though the page linking to them hasn't been updated since 2011. And notably, it doesn't have the new HTML: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10628494

But the RSS feeds are just the headlines. And also don't contain every article ever - only the latest ones with a limit. So not much use to News Sniffer.

comice··on Moving BBC Online to the Cloud
I run the News Sniffer[1] project which has to parse BBC News pages and I knew about this rollout a few weeks ago when the HTML all changed format completely and my parsers broke.

As a side note, the new HTML is way more complicated and much harder to parse than before - I know the aim isn't to help parsing for content, but I was still saddened to see how it's ended up (a bit of a mess imo - hard to distinguish actual article content from other things).

If anyone knows a reliable and public way to access the content before the "web rendering" layer, that'd be very handy!

comice··on 1Password for Linux development preview
I used the browser tool (and 1p sync) but it still didn't support export to 1PIF format afaikt, which only the desktop GUI tools supported.
comice··on 1Password for Linux development preview
I just used the "1PIF" export from 1p, which bitwarden supports for import (but the 1p cli doesn't support).

I'm loving bitwarden too. It's slightly not as good as 1p in some ways, but better in more than others. That's my review :)

comice··on 1Password for Linux development preview
I started to write that exact script myself (go to the point of realising jq probably wasn't going to cut it :), motivated by the desire to help others escape too but I just ran out of steam.

Plus, there was something not right about the fact I was actually paying for these damn tools and still having to write my own code! Thought I'd just get out as quickly as I could and not go back.

But having seen others in these threads complain, I do now feel kind of bad!

comice··on 1Password for Linux development preview
I just moved from (paid) 1p to bitwarden at the weekend due to lack of proper Linux support. I was just testing bitwarden and found I couldn't easily get a good export of my passwords from 1p on Linux, because only their desktop apps support that. It won't run under wine and I ended up installing a Windows VM specifically to do the export.

Was so frustrated at this it pushed me to move to bitwarden. Good for them for sorting it though.

comice··on Show HN: Terraform recipe for running Jitsi Meet on DigitalOcean
hey nice work. I did the same thing but for Brightbox: https://github.com/brightbox/deploy-jitsi

realised I've not licensed it properly though! will sort that out tomorrow.

blogged about it here: https://www.brightbox.com/blog/2020/03/30/how-to-install-jit...

took me a while to sort out the fqdn config change, did you get that working?

comice··on The 40M dollar job
> Employment today is increasingly a heavily biased and ethically corrupt way of implementing UBI.

I've see this said similarly before but find it unbelievable. Why would any company want to employ people en masse as a benefit primarily for the employees?

How would that even arise? And if it did, how wouldn't another more efficient company out-compete them?

I accept that it's possible companies don't want to invest in or take the risk of automation, but that's nothing like it being some kind of conscious UBI-like policy decision.

comice··on Sandspiel – A falling sand game built in Rust and WebGL
boiling some water was pretty much the first thing I tried too! was disappointed.

still great though.

comice··on Police spies infiltrated UK leftwing groups for decades
how many of them have that goal? what do you think of the monitoring of the rest of them?
comice··on UK Labour Leader proposes a publicly-funded alternative to Facebook
Wasn't there a country that ran an XMPP chat server or similar for it's citizens? I'm trying to find the details but failing. I'm sure I read about it in the last couple of years.
comice··on UK Labour Leader proposes a publicly-funded alternative to Facebook
aside from the fact that for a variety of reasons, the BBC is not truly independent, if it's possible to build such an independent media company "funded via tax" then why isn't it possible to do the same for a social media company?
comice··on UK Labour Leader proposes a publicly-funded alternative to Facebook
"What escapes the left completely, is that there is a free market. Which can and always does a better job than central planning."

It might escape them, or it might not be universally true.

You might not be from the UK but surely you're aware of the BBC, which provides extremely high quality media and raises the bar here for the "free market". Our media companies here are better because of the existence of the BBC.

comice··on UK Labour Leader proposes a publicly-funded alternative to Facebook
why would a public UK social network need a global CDN and storage capacity for billions of users?
comice··on UK Labour Leader proposes a publicly-funded alternative to Facebook
fair points but different issues entirely to what I was replying to.
